We buy our inks from QPS and they are shortly going to release a bulk ink system for the VJ 1604 using the Nazdar inks.

    Hi Jason
The process I explained in my last post is for the VJ 1604.

You can set the time span of the self clean from the control panel.

    hi Jason

The way I do a manual head clean is
    Turn off printer

    lower left and right doors

    Lower rollers

Looking at the head through the right hand door, on the left side of the head there is a plastic catch that needs to be pushed down to allow the head to be pushed all the way across to the left.

Through the left hand door you can now clean the perimeter around the head with a swab do not touch the head its self.

With a clean swab you can clean the wiper through the right door.

Return head to original position when finished.

I cut up green scouring pads as replacements for the spitting box.

    Onyx or Flexi work well.

    Are you running mutoh inks.

February 9, 2009 at 12:37 pm in reply to: Your views on OUR trade suppliers competing against us?

I know it’s late but thought I had to tell my story.

We to are victims in this trade/customer print war. We had a fairly large job of printing large banners for an Ad-Van customer that we gained by spending well over £3000 advertising in the yellow pages. The Ad-van was two large for our value jet 1604 so we looked to outsource it. BP Lightbrigade came up with a decent price that we marked up. The customer accepted this quote and we placed the order asking BP Lightbrigade to discreet mail with no reference to their company what so ever. We had the banners delivered to our workshop as we wanted to see the print quality and check them over and delivered them to our customer. They were perfectly fine and the customer loved them. They went up nicely and we were proud of the job.

The next lot, the customer was in a bit of a rush so we had the banners delivered straight to the customer again DISCREET PACKAGING was the main issue. They were delivered fine and again, were on the ad-van and looked great.

One problem tho….. BP Lightbrigade did not send the banners discreetly and now we have lost a client. They did appologise which is like shutting the stable door after the horse has boltled!!!

We will not use them again….

    Basically yes! 😉

We used to have a LWB, HT, Transit but it had 1 side window and we said it was a carravanette. We saved £50 each trip so it’s one of them that could work and save this guy a fortune or end up costing him more then fitting proper windows.

I think its more about the image for the windows. I’m not saying you have to print seats but blacked out windows could work. I have stated my conserns so the ball is in his court.

I appreciate your help guys, thank you!

    Hi All
We have recently started using smart knives so far very good results on all size of text.
The guy at Mathias was very helpful and also gave a tip when cutting out labels don’t use flex cut but application tape the back of the vinyl then crank up the pressure on the knife to cut through the vinyl and backing but not the app tape keeping that smart knife just for this procedure . Properly a lot of you already know this tip dose it work as I have not tried it yet.

    I have my 22" widescreen monitor set at 1680 x 1050.

As to the 2nd point, the gold one sounds like a DVI connection, you would use this instead of the standard VGA connection. Check the back of your computer to see if you have the same connection on there. DVI would be slightly better quality then the VGA.

This is what my tech guy says, I havn’t got a clue what it means!

Yes it does have a heater built in and we leave it on to help the curing.
We made our stackable plates from off cuts of diabond trimed to size and double sided taped the plug side of some plastic locaters to the underside as feet.

We bought a propagator from our local garden center for around £25.00. We lay our sheet of labels on some board with feet inside the propagator and stack as high as we need. We then leave them a day and they are fine.

Hi Kimberly, My partner (Neil Herbert) has a builders yard in Dagenham and on the side, had a CNC router and a 610 vinyl cutter. After moving from Dagnham to the Isle of Wight, Neil brought his little cutter over and did a few things for local pubs etc… I (Damon Larter) was 15 and started dating his daughter. I helped out with a few bits and pieces but didn’t no what I wanted to do with my life but picked up the software and machinery quiet well and most importantly enjoyed it. So here we are today (now almost 22) in a small workshop with a Value Jet and Summa Cutter. No longer with his daughter but I got a business out of it lol!!!

John & Martin, Laminating was a problem being downstairs and I like the idea of the meeting room downstairs. I suppose we could use a divider type wall so you could open and close the meeting room and wheel the laminator into position if kept upstairs???

Also Dave, I have requested the user name change, thank you for bringing this to my attention!

Steve, don’t worry, there will be a fridge in the kitchen (a large one) which I’m sure wont only be used for eggs!!!

March 25, 2008 at 3:48 pm in reply to: what do you think about my new workshop layout?

It is completely from scratch! We are just in the layout stages but the design of the building is to size. I.e. the router would fit in that room. When i get a chance i will put a few measurements on it for a better idea. The cutter and printer would be upstairs with the designer but once done, would go downstairs for laminating (on the Eazy Taper) The printer is a Mutoh Value Jet 1.6 and the cutter is a Summa Cut D160 SE

The idea is for the vinyls to be room temperature and away from dust. The problems and money saved from a clean environment I personally think would warrant going up and down the stairs.

Carrying the rolls up the stairs would be a problem tho!!!

Oh, and great idea about cutting machines to scale out of vinyl!

On the island we operate a Value Jet 1604 printing canvas, banners and vinyl with a summa SE1600 for contour and vinyl cutting with an Ezy Taper for mounting / laminating.

We have recently launched a website for canvas printing that is our baby at the moment.

    hi Lisa

The Mutoh Value Jet printers are outstanding in all departments speed, ease of use, quality, maintenance and used with the Onyx rip colour issues seam to be a thing of the past.

We have had our 1604 for nearly a year now best bit of kit we have ever purchased. Before we purchased we took some files to Sign UK had them printed on a short list of machines that we were interested in and the VJ came out best so we bought the VJ and a Summa SE 1600 cutter with optical eye for couture cutting, both have turned out to be excellent machines.

Purchased both from Allan Flynn (Flynn Signs)

    Hi Arran
We have a VJ 1604 and suffered this problem we found it normally was caused by the head brushing the top of the canvas. We found that the way the material was wound was important and when loading on to back spool rather than pushing the ends on tight we left some play this allowed the roll to move sidewards when needed an cured our problem.

Also check for a build up of ink on the bottom of the head and surrounding area.

Hope this is of some help

    Hi All

    Marko YYZ

We completed a job not so long ago using flat cut letters with LEDs but the halo is almost non existent , we are just about to replace a couple of letters fitted with new LEDs (they look similar to yours in the photos) to test the brightness I think our problem is because the background colour is a dark red, would you suggest applying white vinyl cut in the shape of the letters and applied to the substrate behind the flat cut letters?

When you say with the premask on is this a software setting or app tape applied to the vinyl face?

    Cheers

    Hi Cheryl

Great job well done, did you use full solvent ink or eco solvent was there any over lamination used. Very interested as we have a 64" printer running eco inks but durability would be an issue without lamination but we would like to take on similar jobs.

    Cheers

Hi we have been running VJ 1640 + Onyx for 2 months with a summa D1600 with out any problems.
We took our own files to Sign UK and had them printed buy both printers there was a noticeable difference + a separate print & cut setup I think is better.

Hello, we have the LG system, well 2 in fact! One for our I.O.W branch and one for our Essex branch. They have been successful. The kit itself is an OKI C5250 printer and software etc… It does the job well but there are rumours of the yellow plates fading after 2 years but i suppose they should be replaced in that time anyway. We have also done a couple of shows where we converted a horse trailor and sold them out of it with alot of interest. The help and support is good, we get it from Tennants UK or LG themselves. Our guy in Essex may be interested in selling one of our plate systems but not sure how that would stand with the help and support etc…
All in all we are happy with our choice. (mod-edit)

    Any questions, let me know!

Hi we have just had a 64" Value Jet installed yesterday, we chose that machine at the sign show because of the weaving system which seams to sorts out any banding problems. So far so good. We have been using a 54" Resolve and have tried printing problem files on the new machine and great results on all so far.
