Thanks for all that Rob and Phil. I think I’ll try the stuff Andrew mentions, cheers Andrew. I guess normal transfer paper then?

Rob, I’ve read about the repositionable stuff and it just puzzles me.. the problem with vinyl on walls is it comes off too easy when you pull back the transfer paper, so I’m perplexed that the answer could be to use stuff designed to come away easily.

I’d go undercover in my own place but its only really me and my brother that works there… Be good to catch the f****r blagging paper clips though. Good excuse to get a fake beard too; most of you know how good I look with a beard.

    Brrrrrrrrrring brrrrrriring, brrrrrrrrring brrrrrrring…

Bo: "Gortch, there was a really weird guy hanging about the shop earlier, he had a beard, said you gave him a job…"

Gortch: "yah that’s the new guy, handsome chap isn’t he, very smart too…"

Bo: "don’t know about that… Spent the morning on adult friend finder then asked me if I knew where he could get some cheap paper clips…"

Gortch: "Ok I have another call, gotta go…"

Correx signs on a shop… nuts.

The economy is free-fall right now. My advice to all of you is to sell your solvent printers and buy air rifles; with any luck you’ll be able to shoot some rats or something and get through the recessionary holocaust…

As it happens I’m looking for a cheap solvent… send me a message

Nice of you to say so, Rob…

I’m glad you haven’t seen my work but what I’m finding is a lot of people just want stuff that looks bad and it reflects badly on me — not a lot I can do about it if their logo and layout which they insist on is pretty amateurish looking.

Also, that common problem, they all want foam board and want it as cheap as possible.

I quoted for a shop recently in a really good area near town, it was a huge shop, I’d guess the rent on this place was 2 or 3 thousand per month, and they basically wanted the cheapest sign money could buy. Asked if I could cover the existing previous owners sign with vinyl and put their logo on top… total budget was about £150 she said.

Just doesn’t make sense to me and I’m glad I have other irons in the fire at times.

Jeez. I’m speechless. There’s a first. Brilliant though that, in a way… My face changes colour like that when the customer comes over to see how I’m getting on with his new sign.

But where the hell do you find things like that’s the web? I never find stuff like that.

On WordPress I’d advise buying one of the professional templates… but, as much as wordpress is alright if you want hassle-free updatability etc, it takes time to properly populate it and get away from it looking like an empty (under constriction) shell.

I’m a web guy, to be honest, so my opinions here might be a bit skewed. I decided about 2 years ago to thoroughly investigate the usefulness of wordpress. I bought a professional template/them, installed it, spent literally weeks working to get to know my way around (both on the theme and wordpress). I eventually got it looking and fuctioning the way I wanted it and at the time described it as possibly the best website the world has ever seen…

Anyway, all of a sudden I had problems — vulnerabilities in some script somewhere. After about 5 reinstalls, fixing things up, etc, etc, I decided to dump it. People visiting my website were getting viruses and everything. I’m pretty competent with these technologies and I couldn’t get rid of this problem… I exchanged countless emails with experts all over the world, including the guys that sold me the theme, to no avail.

I can honestly say that was a terrible few weeks and as much as I might use wordpress for some things, it isn’t something I would want to go through again with my main source of income website.

Another problem I had with wordpress was it’s limitations in terms of being able to optimise for Google, but that’s another story…

If I was advising someone on the way to go, and they had the money, I would probably recommend spending 2 or 3 grand to get a proper bespoke CMS solution..

I’m afraid being nice and signs might work for some people but not for all. I think going into the school might be an idea, have a chat with them. Teachers are mostly depressed psychopaths though so I wouldn’t make any assumptions about them playing ball with you — would you believe I used to be one?

So basically you need to put signs on the shutters and on the ground between the road and your premises. You need to word the signs very strongly, use red and white colours, scare the life outta them. Don’t use big words, keep it simple — "Park here, you die" sorta thing.

Get some red paint and spatter some on the shutters and road, make it look like some disturbing sheeeet has unfolded — a bloody hand print or two on the shutters could be good. Get one of your workmates to lie down and draw a white chalk line around him.

Most importantly, you will need to devote a day or two to monitoring the situation. And you need to be prepared to confront anyone who parks there. Don’t be too British about it either; "excuse me, old chap" will not work and the nicer you are about this, the more likely you are to end up in a real fight. Be American, think Taxi Driver or Joe Pesci…

You need to get the message out there that A) you aren’t a poossy, B) you are prepared to go to prison over this issue, and C) you are deranged. Ideally these would be true of you but I make no assumptions.

How do I know so much about all this? I had a similar problem with neighbours a few years back. It wasn’t until I got real nasty with them that the situation was resolved. I was lucky though, the neighbours in question were both in their 80’s. You may not be so fortunate.

    Good luck.

ahem… i mean we will all get our heads together and have a jolly good think on how best to portray your image. 😕 :wedgey:

seriously though, stick something up mate, ill even give a go if i can get my head out my backside for 5 minutes. 😳

Van is white, I’m afraid, Rob… I’m actually sort of glad it’s white as it fits in with my website which is blue and white.

My shop which is dominated by my other company is green and white — I got a lot of nasty feedback (seriously, from Rangers fans) for switching to green and white which was meant to make us look environmentally friendly. Of course, it’s a total lie, there’s nothing environmentally friendly about anything I do.

Anyway, I was planning on leaving the van white for a few weeks until I came up with a clever idea for the design but I’ve decided just to whack it right away… I can’t afford to miss out on any potential sales the advertising might generate.

I’ll post my design on Monday or Tuesday and you can all have a laugh. I’d love to use the C word in really big bold letters but I suppose it would be against the law or something to go around with that on a van. As much as I love the C word, deploying it has caused me a lot of hassle over the years. Would definitely grab your attention though…

I’ll send you a link to the new website, Rob. Always good to hear your opinion. Actually, I think the domain name was your idea… so you can see what I done with your idea. If the business fails miserably, I’ll park the van with the C word outside your office and leave it there. Might even put a huge picture of my genitals on the side…

    Love all that…

I’m now thinking about the sort of customers I want to attract… I hadn’t thought about that. That’s tough.

I suppose my ideal customer, much like my ideal woman, would be extremely daft and have lots of money 😉

I think I’ll go for a more subtle approach, classy and conservative if possible. Someone used trasparent laminate on a black van on here and I thought it looked good… might do something subtle like that. I was thinking it would be good to use reflective stuff that would jump out at you when lights hit it at night but was virtually impossible to see during the day.

I don’t like the idea of doing it half one way and half another.

Good to hear thoughts though. Thanks. Would love to see pictures of UKSB members’ vans but I expect they’d be worried about me copying them.

Jill has a beard, trust me, you just can’t see it in the picture. It’s a little cute, goatee-like one. A little fluffy bundle of delicate loveliness. And against that contrasting backdrop, she has the most juicy pink swollen lips I ever did see; in a certain light they seem to glisten and glow like polished red petals. I have dreamt and will continue to dream about the day I see those sweet petals part, welcoming and beckoning me: "hello, my stallion, come inside and warm yourself…"

Don’t you miss having hair, John? I love how it feels when a woman runs her fingers through mine. I also enjoy the variety of looks I can achieve depending on how I choose to comb or style it. Then there’s the basic warmth it provides…

I spend hours looking at shampoos and conditioners in the supermarket, not to mention styling products, combs, and stuff. I suppose that’s one of the aisles you just walk past? I’d find that tough, like I was really missing out on something meaningful.

That’s nice of you. The English are just too considerate for their own good; always worrying about helping other people and willing to go the extra mile.

You even enshrined that love and willingness to go the extra mile in the national anthem. I’m talking about the loving sixth verse, of course, where good old Marshal Wade is implored "like a torrent" to "crush" the rebellious Scots…

Feel the love. Id be the first to say that we Scots don’t deserve you as neighbours. But, then, it’s not just the neighbours you love is it, you’ve always had plenty to spare for countries further afield? So much so that we’ve never felt like we had to compete with the Irish, Indians, Chinese, more recently Iraqis, afghans, and Libyans, for your attention, to name just a few.

Where other countries export cars and corn and what not, England’s chief export has always been love. It’s very moving.

You remind me of one of my aunties, generous to a fault and never thinking of herself. It’s about time England got some love back, I say. You’ve given so much over the centuries, it’s about time the world repaid you. Payback time, if you will.

I’m obviously going to need to give Signlab a second chance. I just find it really clunky compared to say photoshop which I spend about 6 hours a day using. Could be just a matter of getting used to it.

Quick question… You know those impact van diagrams you get, can you take those into signlab, put a mock design on, then export a draft for customer to approve as a jpeg say? If so, what format works best with the impact diagrams in signlab?

If the above was possible, it would be appealing.

Trying to imagine how I would create a logo in signlab and then place it on the side of a van diagram… Would you create the logo in one document then import it to the van document? Or just do it all in one? Probably a daft question…

Thanks for taking the time you guys, yeez urr brullyint.

After hearing about a fire at a local Cash & Carry a few years ago we were reliably informed by a neighbour that the police had put an "accordion" around the building… still makes us chuckle.

My daughter who is now 5 still calls eggs "neggs" — from hearing us ask if she wants an egg at breakfast, to her it must sound like "a negg". We don’t want to tell her coz it’s cute and if she grows up it will make us feel old 😮

I think I’ll just use Oracle for everything, it seems to be the brand people refer to time and time again and so I don’t think I’d be too far wrong doing that.

I’ll look at the price difference between Oracle 551 and 751c.

The van that apparently is showing signs of letters lifting belongs to a car valeter and I suspect that he’s power washing it 10 times a day or something.

I didn’t know that customers should be advised not to power wash lettering… learning curve.

Thanks for all your feedback on this. Once again finding membership of this forum to be totally invaluable.

Cheers Nick. I’d love to hear more about your tests. What did you print the vinyl stickers with before you got the solvent printer?

    quote Nick.Eccles:

    Gordon,

before we bought our solvent printer (roland VS) last year I experimented with some laser printer vinyl and waterproof posters (we have a good A3 Laser printer), when I tested them I stuck them to the bathroom wall and had the shower on them for a few hours !!

As for the results the stickers were ok, I even contour cut them on my plotter using regiatration marks, however they always produced a matt finsih and had to go careful handling them when fitting. I decided it wasn’t worth creating a bad reputation over them and only ever did a few for people I knew well and understood the limitations.

Now we have the VS the costs of producing are a small fraction of what they were with the Laser Printer.

    Nick.

Don’t apologize for the post being lengthy, Martin, when for me it couldn’t be. It’s great to read your opinions, they’re really appreciated. Only on here do I find people like you talking factually about their experiences with such things…

I like your points on what you say about using my printer being used for outdoor work. I was aware of issues but it’s good to see someone actually putting a measured time stamp on life expectancy.

We haven’t invested that much in all this stuff, I’d say about £10k so far. I was hoping what we have now would generate enough to buy a solvent printer but based on what your saying it might be worth forking out sooner rather than later. Problem is cost — got to weight up the risks of a second hand machine against the costs of a new one.

If the economy didn’t look so screwed up it would be a no-brainer but I’ve watched 3 or 4 of our biggest clients go under since 2013 started, with one of us owing us quite a few quid (funnily enough they were wholesale printers).

Hiya Martin, good idea with the comparison.

I’m using the HP Designjet with pigment inks (I think HP call that UV ink). I’ll do what you say. I would rather avoid laminating, it just seems to add a lot of hassle and also adds to costs.

By all means tell me I’m stupid.

I did a test with adhesive vinyl that I printed to and stuck to foam board. I laminated one picture with the liquid laminate and the other the normal way with stuff off the roll. I then hosed them down for over an hour and both seemed totally perfect afterwards. I thought that meant I could use the same approach for van panels with printed stuff but I don’t know how meaningful my test was.

All good though, I like experimenting and I’m just killing time with this until my website appears on Google etc. I expect to buy a solvent printer soon too… probably second hand.

Would probably be an idea to try this and see how it performs…

    Yah, ignore that fo’ shizzle…

My advice to everybody the noo is to make sure your registration doesn’t expire tho.. one of my customers contacted me recently to ask why I had turned her Jewelry website into a porn site… as if I’d do a thing like that 😮

Turns out she had let the name expire and, within seconds of it doing so, some company from Canada bought it and replaced it with, well… to be fair, I think one or two of the pictures did include jewelery.

The solution, of course, was simple; buy the domain back for £1200 or the porn site remains in place.

An old trick that, but very effective.

The moral of the story? I drew a couple of conclusions actually: 1) despite what they say about Canadians, they are pretty ruthless business-wise, and 2) luminous pink stockings just don’t work well with black heels.

    Hi Rob,

I think you’ll find that a public performance of Hi Ho, Hi Ho will incur a royalty charge… I believe Disney own the rights to that. The charge will depend on how many people you expect to experience the performance.

Seriously, though, you’re right. The artists basically get zilch. MCPS and PRS make plenty though. It’s another trough/racket, cloaked in the usual, loving language of rights, justice, and protection.

A lot of charities are in that category too, with directors etc on funny money. If as little as 2% filters through to those they claim to represent, they go all teary-eyed and congratulate themselves. It’s all too familiar but it’s the self-righteous tone and pious faces rather than the fleecing that bugs me.

You need to consider all those cleaners, kitchen workers, labourers, and others doing menial jobs. Music just puts ideas in their heads and distracts them from their responsibilities. Maybe they can learn to sing like the folks that worked in the cotton fields used to…

If you were a musician, would you want to think your music was making the swinish multitude’s lives more pleasant without you getting a few pennies?

We need to bludgeon it into people’s skulls — everything, absolutely everything, from the water you drink, to heating, pleasure, shoes, health, education, dental care, blood, and even music, comes at a price.

Ideally they would put some sort of meter on our hearts and charge us for every beat it makes, one unit cost that covers everything. That would simplify things. If you don’t pay on time…. well… The only question then would be who pays for the funeral.

Oh, btw, merry Christmas everybody… And a happy new year too.

So it’s a political satire of a video, giving emphasis to the increasing sense of alienation that young people in the 21st century feel vis a vis society as a whole. Indirectly it tackles resounding issues of race, interpersonal relationships, and of course the immortal dialectics of individualism versus conformity. On top of all that he tossed in a bit of romance for the ladies. Well done that chap. My only criticism is that it didn’t have any guns, blood, or erotica in it. No, Rob, I didn’t laminate the banner I made… I don’t have a solvent printer though, I’m using an HP designjet 5500 with UV/pigment inks, so if I do anything for outdoors at all (including banners) I will need to laminate… I have liquid laminate and was advised to use that.

It’s my plan to buy a solvent printer in February… I think the BN-20 looks appropriate for us… I love the HP I got and it seems to be dead cheap to run so despite its limitations I think it’ll be handy for indoor stuff over the longer term.

I’m not in any rush to start selling this stuff but I have already done a few bits and bobs (t-shirts, vinyl signs, posters). In the background I’m working on the website optimisation etc so when that kicks in I expect I’ll need to take things more seriously.

I didn’t realise there would be so much physical kinda DIY type work involved, cutting boards, drilling, going up ladders, etc… I’ve always been useless at stuff like that. Even loading a roll of scrim or something on to the printer is quite a challenge for me.

    The saga continues…

OK, so I have been considering this problem for 3 days. Obviously you don’t want to have to take the vinyl off and start all over again.

When faced with problems in life, I always try to resolve in a way that is the most cost-effective and simplest… in this case, I resolve one problem with another — two birds with one stone sorta logic.

So the guy was probably standing about loitering or something somewhere anyway and now he has a purpose in life (hiding the mistake). It’s not a permanent fix but as long as he can stand there until the cheque clears.

If by USB sticks you mean illicit affairs with fruity women I met on the Songs of Praise forum, probably about the same.
