• Vector Magic files

Posted by Martin Pearson on April 4, 2011 at 4:16 pm

I know a few people on here use them and think they are great so just thought I would ask a question to see if anyone can help.

Got a black & white jpeg image that I need to vectorise, would be hours of work in inspire which is what I use for signmaking. Thought I would give vector magic a try as you get 2 free conversions if you sign up. Uploaded file, converted and it looks to have done a good job with very little additional editing required but having downloaded it as an eps it now won’t open in the software I use.

Think I followed their steps correctly but wondered if someone might be able to help.

It’s probably a very new program which created the eps or as I often find some programs don’t like some eps versions.
Probably best to upload it for someone to try for you.

Martin, I have the full version of VectorMagic. If you post the original bitmap I will vector it for you and export it any way you like.

Thanks people, not sure why it won’t open maybe as Peter says because it’s a newer version EPS.

I haven’t had problems with EPS files before and downloaded this as an EPS software I use is either Inspire which is really old ( pre Flexi) running on windows 98 but I also have VMP version 2.95 which runs on XP. Not sure how old an ai file or eps would have to be to open but would appreciate someone having a go.

John what did you use to vectorise it as it has the same problem I was having before, when I try and import into VMP I just get a box with a cross through it. Thanks for trying anyway.

I traced in vector magic(saving as eps). I then imported to corel and saved as eps

Just to rule out the problem regarding it being saved from vector magic

So now you know its not only eps files from vector magic that your having this problem with

    Cheers

Martin, try this one. I saved it from Illustrator in a legacy version (Version 10) it seems to load fine. John’s file was fine here as well so you may have a problem importing eps?

    Hi Martin,
Alan beat me to it – Coreldraw does a fine job.

It does, I always used Corel before I got VectorMagic. Alan, sorry but I think yours has a few rogue grey bits so it won’t do a clean single colour cut. (Break it apart and delete the big bit and you will see them) 😉

Quite likely David, I would normally convert the RGB bitmap to 1 bit for this kind of job. This was just a quick exercise to see how different the results were.

Thanks for the help people, David, it’s the software that I use not the file itself, Inspire is a great program but now very dated as it won’t run on anything post windows 98. The other program I use is VMP 2.95 which does have a problem with some EPS files.

Spoke with Shaun at Future Corps about it and he told me about the problems. The new version VMX did a brilliant job but as I only have the demo version I couldn’t save it with that unfortunately.

John, not that straight forward, yes I would normally agree with you but I don’t do a lot of work now due to my health and that’s not going to change. Difficult to justify any sort of expense under those sort of circumstances although the windows 98 machine isn’t going to run for ever so I may be forced to do something at some point or just stop altogether :lol1:

I use WinPCSIGN 2009 Pro and most jpegs etc are vectorised at the touch of a button.. I did your Dooooog and it took 8 seconds. Perfect vector copy.

Gavin, there is a lot of software about that will do the job well but I’m not looking to buy any more sign making software, I only looked at vector magic as I know a lot of forum members use it.

I’ve got a demo copy of VMX which did a great job of vectorising it but you can’t save or export anything on the demo version unfortunately.
The job has been done now and infact the Breeder has already had at least one phone call about pups that I know of so the customer is very happy.
Thanks for taking the time to post anyway, the info might be useful to someone looking for new software.
