My Apple mad son was showing that earlier on. The magnetic cover that acts as a stand is fantastic! Apple just piss me off at bringing out updates so quickly, if I had just bought an iPad not knowing of the new one I’d be well peeved. But all that aside I think they are fantastic, even if you only use it as a family photo album. I want one….. or do I need one…hmmm!

There are all ready vector based design apps on apple iOS and with the new A5 chip and iOS 4.3 software coming these applications are only going to get better. just took a look at that noteslate also looks a good bit of kit.

on the apple side another grate benefit coming with iOS 4.3 allows you to share you re 3G Internet connection with up to 4 devices, so there is no need to have a separate contract to get online with mac book or ipad when not in a wi-fi area.

They have knocked £100 off the old iPad. £329 not bad if you don’t need the iPad 2 improvements.

can anybody list the advantages of an ipad for use in their business (besides playing games while waiting for a meeting or customer :lol1: )

I would like to know (as an apple user) if this would be a useful daily tool in place of the pen and pad and anything else useful to actually help while on the job.

    cheers

If you have to ask Warren…I would say no, it probably is of no use. For show maybe…but essential? Nope. 😀

I tried an iPad last year for a couple of weeks. Found I didn’t need it as I have a MacBook Pro laptop. (The missus was amazed I took it back :lol1: ) If you had to meet a client on site and you have a laptop you could take that with you to show your portfolio and some designs etc.

If you haven’t got a laptop then it may be a consideration to take your portfolio with you and show some designs, it does look more professional than a few A4 prints. Their are some drawing packages so you could do draft sketches on site.

As a business tool you’re equally as well off with an Android tablet, I bought a b grade one from Maplines last week for £116.00 inc VAT. I suspect the new ipad will be like most apple stuff – pretty to look at, fun to use with innovative design and overpriced.

vinyl is not essential because we can paint signs 😉 :lol1:

Seriously though I know it’s not essential otherwise all sign makers would be buying one, what I want to know is can it replace what I am using now (pen and paper) or will I end up with both?

There are probably many things it can do that I don’t know about hence asking here from those who have them.

My thoughts are I can use it to take a picture of the shop front (for example) it has an HD camera so picture quality hopefully is good (for portfolio pictures as well) Then use the picture you just took to write on top all the measurements and notes etc and even have the capabilities of rough sketches to show the customer. Write notes etc and it can all be saved (and searched for later) If I could do this on the ipad I could eliminate pen, paper and camera from my bag. All my notes etc could be search-able unlike now I have to page through note pad after note pad to find something I wrote down a month ago or longer.

Not much is usually essential but progress and taking advantage of technology (as we already do in our machinery as sign makers) is my though.

We often don’t realise how useful a piece of kit can be until after we’ve bought it. A typical example fro me was my first digital camera. I managed for years using a polaroid and eventually splashed out on a fancy digital camera just because I really wanted one. I thought it would be useful for my business, but didn’t realise until after I’d bought it just how useful it was. Nowadays it’s essential.

I don’t know about the Ipad – but I reckon you want to buy one so why not treat yourself Warren 😀

money! :lol1: I’m seeing more going out currently then coming in 😉

that’s why I want to make sure it can replace what I use now otherwise just an additional unnecessary expense right now.

We use them for showing pics to customers, much better than lugging a laptop around. And the app for taking images of a shopfront to write dimensions on could be really useful. It could be emailed back to the office for someone to start working on straight away.

not sure about the ipad 2 features but the HTC flyer that will be out in the next couple of months comes with a stylus for note taking and diagrams. It also allows you to record sound so you can talk while note taking and the voice recording will be linked to what you were writing at the time.

this pen is amazing, a friend of mine has one and it’s essential for his studying as he is very dyslexic http://www.livescribe.com/en-gb/

But I’m hoping the flyer will be someway good at the same thing as well as doing lots of other things http://www.htc.com/www/product/flyer/overview.html

I was going to buy the old ipad on orange for £99! but then £25 a month.
I now have seen that is a rip off as its because the new ipad is coming out at the end of this month.
I did buy an apple iphone 4 on the day it came out and was very disappointed and sold it. The battery was not good, it would freeze and it just wasnt good for what i needed it for, but sometimes i do miss it.
I would like to get the new ipad 2 but im not going to rush in like i did with the iphone. It had signal problems and i want to wait until it is settled for a couple of months after and problems eliminated. Then i’ll consider it!!!

Had a look at the Note-slate. It looks like things have gone full circle; it’s just an electronic version of what cave men used.
I’ve had reps here with Ipads just itching for a way to use it as a sales tool but guess what; they still get out the laptop.
Me, can’t see a use for it. I take a laptop to a customer with artwork ready prepared. The design gets tweaked there and then and the order completed.
If you show a picture on an Ipad and the customer wants mods it’s not going to do the job.
As for the future, I see Android as being the most popular OS for phones and pads etc.

Harry, just do a Google search for maplins, I don’t have a link handy. It does have a webcam but not a digital cameral as such but you can get apps from Android Market. 2 gig on boards but will take a micro SD card upto 32gig. I want it to carry photos to show customers of past work when I’m out on a visit, with all the apps available I’m sure I can find more uses for it.
