WOW unit looks great! Congrats!
Keep thinking that we need bigger premises…. one day … one day….

Your head test is giving the answer – The red scale is due to cyan & black ink not being printed correctly or at all in paces, and causing a false colour shift, simply down to the head need cleaning/fixing.

Don’t think there are dampers (like solvent machines) on HP aqueous printers, aren’t there built into the user changeable printheads?
-
Just remembered an issue with our old Z6100 that had a very similar problem
Check the ink cartridges, make sure none of the ink bags inside are leaking/burst.
This will obviously starve the printhead of ink over time, causing the print to fade! Doesn’t happen at the start due to the pump charging the printhead and tubes.
WARNING – if it is a faulty cartridge, you’ll need to replace the printhead at the same time too, I was told there’s a small butterfly valve inside that closes and will not reopen, so issue will continue, too us awhile to find this out… and a couple of printheads 👿
-
Hugh,, try a printhead test and check the solid colour boxes – we had an issue at the start of the prints colour was faded, it turned out to be a printhead misfiring, confirmed via test print.
-
Antalis stock Oracal have you tried them ?

+1 for Rob’s comment
A cutter costing a few hundred pounds is aimed at the hobbyist market (Some rolls of vinyl will cost you more than that!) , Yes you can slooooooooooooooowly cut vinyl, but if you looking to make a business out of this idea, you should be looking at a good cutter (Roland, Graphtec, Mimaki, Summa just off the top of my head, you might find some good second user machines about) with a minimum width of 610mm, any smaller you’ll will be limiting your market from the start, plus your vinyl supplier will make a charge for slitting down rolls for these smaller machines.
Yes you can buy a cheap ebay cutter that will work for you, I know a few people on these board use them to good effect, but you will also notice these cutter bring the most problems, something that a new business doesn’t need.
If your seriously looking at this as a business, then allow a proper budget to get you started, I’m not trying to scare you at all, but its worth setting up properly with good equipment at the start, there is enough pressure starting up without unsuitable equipment causing you extra headaches.

+1 Call Antalis for trade prices
5mm Foamboard is listed at £62 a sheet….. we pay about £25 😮

There is a PS (Post Script version) which I’m guessing you have, so you can print direct without a rip.
While your updating drivers, check the firmware of the printer to see if it latest version – I remember back when the Z6100 came out there was a firmware issue that changed sizes – might be coincidence.
Also might be worth checking the printers margins – on our machine its:
Setup – Printer preferences – printer margins
Hopefully the same on the Z2100.
Let me know how you get on,
Kind regards
Colin

JAG (Signgeer) new catalogue arrived today – I see the new steeltrack, would love one but can’t fit it in… yet…..
-
Hugh, is there anything hidden in the background? (white box, crop marks?) or is it every file you send?
I have a Z6200 but send files from a RIP – are you sending direct?
Would say its due to printing a Liverpool football badge!
:lol1: -
Have a search through these forums, you will see the same reply will crop up:
Sub the printing out, until you can gain enough to work a solvent machine daily.
Print & cut machines, eg Mimkia CJV30-160, you be looking at around £9000 for a second user machine with rip and limited warranty.
Vinyl – number of suppliers out there, Robert Horne, Antalis, Allprint, Grafityp, Hexis Direct, the list goes on.
Ink can range from £80 per cart for genuine to £45 for 3rd party inks.
Don’t forget your other costs:A laminator for example.
Yes you can buy ‘cheap’ solvent machines, but I’d advise an engineer look at them before purchase – why? say it requires a head replacing, say good bye to £700 – £1000.
-
John, how much was shipping costs out of interest?
-
Watching this thread with interest, seen a few of these Chinese laminators and would be interested in how you get on with it.

I think your looking at a couple of different processes all at once here.
Sublimation process – uses a chemical reaction to dye the special coated object or polyester based t-shirt. Using special inks (sublimation inks) you print onto dye-sub transfer paper, this is then placed onto you object / t-shirt, pressed with heat to turn the dye into gas which then transfers & dyes your printable object.
Transfer Paper Process – eg Magictouch. The transfer paper is a special media that is general used with laser type printers. The image is printed onto the transfer paper to basically make a decal type sticker (Not totally accurate, but easiest why to describe it!), again using heat the decal is bonded onto the t-shirt, BUT it does not ‘dye’ the t-shirt, its a sticker, this is why you have to cut around the graphic before transferring or you might see the transfer paper.
Does allow to print onto cotton & dark material unlike sublimation.Hope that helps?
-
The files will not scale up very well being a non vector file……
What size would you like the image?
-
-
Hiyas – we use Illustrator CS6, opened the .eps without issues.
The colouration has been created in a slightly odd with the black & gradient colour being a background blend.
I just ungrouped, released clipping masks, removed black & gradient, selected the wireframe images, added the gradient to the object directly not as a blend or mask.
kind regards
Colin

Black background removed, colour retained in the wave effect

Agree with Adrian,
We have a Xerox docucolor SRA3 machine on pay-per-click contract for short run leaflets, biz cards etc.
With a minimum amount of finishing equipment of guillotine, Creaser / perforator and Laminator(s).Anything over a set volume goes to our trade printer.
Posters / Gallery quality work we use a HP Z6200.
I’d look at using a trade printer, for find it far easier with less hassle.

Making a shop sign next week, approx. 600mm x 2700mm, one piece ACM panel.

Me: Ok, but why’s that Sir.Customer: We have a event at local Town Hall and thought we could use the sign instead of buying the banner you also quoted, then afterwards, we’ll fit it to the shop in such a way that we could remove it, when we have more events… 😛

You can always try converting these spot colours to CMYK first in illustrator, then send to rasterlink.

Hi Nick,
We had the HP 5500 a few years back, the UV version as previously said, just means the ink has more UV protection from fading.
The machine was designed for indoor large format printing, with lamination I’ve know these poster to be displayed for about 6 months outdoors. It certainly isn’t eco-solvent comparable machine (can only print on special coated media, would not work printing onto vinyl)
The HP Z6100 & Z6200 are indeed the replacements to the hugely popular 5500 series (5500 series was a HUGE success for HP, so you will see a lot of these machines for sale), we currently run a Z6200 for our indoor & gallery work, the output is truly stunning, efficient on ink and a good workhorse.
We also run a separate eco-solvent machine for our outdoor / durable work, the print quality is still excellent (we run 6 colour setup), but not as good as the HP Z6200 (it runs 8 colour setup) but both machines are aimed at different markets.
Hope this helps

MemberMarch 21, 2014 at 8:57 am in reply to: Hi folks 🙂 Need some pro advice on producing product labelsTake a look at the mimaki CVJ30-60, (We have a larger version, bullet proof construction, never misses a beat) has the metallic + white options, bigger machine but faster and more scope for other work – you never know you might want to make your own P.O.S items too.
With metallic and whites (as said on this thread already) to make them cost effective you will need to use them continuously, or the cleaning cycle will just eat & waste the ink., and metallic cart’ isn’t the cheapest. We started with the white + metallic option, but changed after 6 months as more ink was being wasted than used.
There can be drying issues with metallic inks too, ‘frog juice’ spray can help/solve this issue – It’s all dependant on the amount of pure metallic silver you use, pure silver will not dry on it own.
-
OHHH never seen the weeder/sheeter – looks good (how is it with small details?)

Allprint, two types, both 150micron gloss white or textured scuff resistant white – Ring and speak to Glen Fyrth.
It won me a nice contract, simply down the material is great for the end user to use. -
If your make a lot of stickers, conceder using a 150micron vinyl – your customer will love you for it!
-
Not used there canvas products, so cant comment on results, But I’m aware Allprint have a few canvas products and can supply profiles.
-
Agree with Stuart above – has some nice advantages at the expense of more paper work.
I had to go VAT reg’ due to turnover – But this also allowed me to reclaim VAT on 2 new printers and a van – not ‘alf bad return.
Also if you have a foot in the traditional print market its worth remembering that some items are zero rated (eg leaflets) but the materials are standard rated (ink, Paper).
-
I use ‘Inkjet Giclee Lamination’, supplied by Canvas & Stretcher bars.
Sprayed on using a small portable compressor & gun kit bought on offer in Lidls – £50.
Just need to clean gun out well afterwards as it sets hard & blocks.
I always spray, gives a superior finish compared to rollers or brushes, something Galleries have picked up on in the past.
Have used frog juice before – also used it to seal metallic inks from the mimaki.
Satin varnish cost about £30 for 2.5lts last time, a lot cheaper then Frog Juice.
-
+1 for Signmaster – £80 oddly hehehe

One option if you have broadband connection at both locations is a simple NAS (Network Attached Storage) setup that allows remote connection – no files to email, no memory sticks needed and access to all files in one place.

I get the same warning on my 5000-60, as said above it when the material rewinds and ‘lifts’ (to close to wall etc), It not a machine fault – just a machine oddity!
David & Chris – add me to that 😳

Agree with above – use ali board (ACM,Dibond, Skybond – a few differnet names).
Is can be cut / shaped with a router if you need corner rounds, can also be cut with hand corner pliers or guillotines.
A few companies will make the blanks up for you (ACM or 100% aluminium) with the channels applied – as Martin says, this will make it difficult to then run through the laminator.
Channel and post clips can be bought and applied using VBH tape (Very High Bond).
Check signgeer website for examples – other companies also sell rails & clips.

Ohhh and no bleed with text set very close to edge !
No idea about TIC with solvent printers, not come across anything spotted that can’t be fixed before going to print yet.
In offset printing (which I was involved in for 22yrs or so..) uncoated stock max TAC (total area coverage) was 240%, coated could handle slightly more at around 320%, but this was for printers tricks like putting a cyan layer under black, to give a strong glossy black print.

MemberJune 25, 2013 at 6:59 pm in reply to: A question regarding vat and buildings, help required.Looked into this myself a year ago, when looking at a new build:
quote :3.2 Freehold sales of new or part completed commercial buildingsIf you sell the freehold of a new, or partly completed, commercial building your supply is standard-rated unless it qualifies to be treated as part of a transfer of a going concern (see Notice 700/9 Transfer of business as a going concern).
For the purposes of this paragraph a commercial building is any building that is not designed as a dwelling or number of dwellings nor intended for use solely for relevant residential or relevant charitable purposes. For the meaning of these terms, see Notice 708 Buildings and construction. Examples of commercial buildings are shops, factories, warehouses and offices.
A building is new for 3 years from the date that it is completed. The date of completion is the date the certificate of practical completion is issued, or the date the building is fully occupied, whichever happens first. All freehold sales that take place within the 3-year period are standard-rated. However, leasehold sales are exempt (subject to the option to tax – see notice 742A Opting to tax land and buildings).
Hope it helps…. You can ring HMRC and ask questions, there pretty easy going surprisingly!
