Thanks for all the help guys , tried a few of them , still not good though , but the wife has just come home and made a suggestion.

I have been playing about for a few hours with this , she comes home and before shes got her coat off she says "nail polish remover".

I couldnt have ask for anything that could do a better job !!

i think i’m gunna buy a truck full and re-label it as "stainless steel" cleaner for the sign industry !!

hugh , its catering grade steel (304) , i.e. , same as your kitchen sink….

i was going to give it a high polish , but it actually looks quite nice as it is , maybe i’ll have to try a polish to remove whatever it is that stopping me stick..

i only use one grade of vinyl (oracle 651) , and i only want to use black , so a bit limited here at the moment…

I didnt think it would be a problem though , 651 sticks to most stuff – never really had a problem.

reason i say heat it up , is that maybe its acting like cold glass , it is cold to touch , even though its been indoors for hours now…..

confusing bit though is that if i apply some text , then take is off , you can see where the letters have been , even if i give it a very good clean , leaves a black outline around the edge where the letters have been , a bit like oil , i haven’t got a good de-greasent here , so i think this will have to be my next attempt…..

i may ring the steel guys though and see if stainless has an ongoing oil leaking property …..

hugh , i dont do vinyl full time , not enough work for me round here , so the rest of my time i’m a local mobile computer engineer

laptops are very tricky , very little you can replace etc , if it was a desktop i’d already have replaced the motherboard &/or cpu as we are talking about £40-70 if you self fit…

    but a laptop is a different story…

i think your computer guy is gunna say , "its time to buy a new one" , "i’d recommend a desktop"

there is still good money to be had from faulty laptops on ebay , i just got £60 for a P3 laptop that only switched on when it felt like it , told the truth about its fault , and the guy was well chuffed.

its just not economical or even possible sometimes to get a new board for a laptop most of the time , unless off course you find one on ebay that is good except for the screen say , then make one good one from the 2 , not for the faint hearted though rebuilding laptops !!

    play with the system bios

you may find out whats causing the problem

start by setting back to factory defaults , its common for people to put everything at FULL speed or upping cpu voltage (Overclocking) , get it back to defaults and see how it performs then

    try slowing down the processor
disabling cache on cpu and/or video

it may take a while to find , i.e. , change a setting , see how it goes , change it back , change another one, see how it goes- etc etc…

your machine can still run pretty good depending on which one of that settings cures the prob (presuming it does)

adding more memory may make it run faster , but wont stop it locking up etc

too much heat sink compound (grease as its been called here) can have the same effect has not enough – overheating

Dave , i’m afraid i sold the press , it was great , dont get me wrong , but i had a very small decal to do one day , and the wife was ironing , nicked it and haven’t looked back since , think i just like the manual approach , get a better feel for what’s going on….

As for the wrap thing , sounds good , but i think it still needs sub ink doesn’t it , and at present i cant afford to plunge £300 on ink if i don’t sell too many…

Maybe somebody has some ink out there good for epson r200 i can get started with ?

thanks guys , been looking into it today , and your right , the ink is the nasty one !! , for some reason i though you could use normal inkjet ink , although it seems you can with special paper , but the paper is very expensive compared to standard sublimation stuff…….

so i think the ink route is the one for me , £50 a shot though , and needing 6 for my epson r200 (already got a bulk system) , thats about 150 mugs before i start making a profit on a £150 press , Mmmmmmmmm

ok , calmed down now…..auto defence mode you see…..good job i’m not in charge of that red button…….

Obviously ebay is full of con men & women , i have hit many myself , its a shame….but i keep telling people that feedback ratings are the way to find honest people , our feedback (wife runs it) is way above 7k , and 99% of bad feedback is from people that get a faulty or damaged product etc and instead of trying to get this resolved with us they go for negative feedback , Tark nearly did it to us when he got 👿 , but he obviously mailed us after posting and he got it replaced free of charge……just a shame its all hung out to dry here i suppose..

in fact anything to get the sale…

    (VERY unfair comment !!!!!)

NOT all Ebayers are bad !!

this IS oracle , yes there is no branding on the back , but comes to us boxed as Oracle from a supplier you all use…..

As we ship in small lengths and only have one box , we use alternative packaging…..

The problem doesn’t occur on all shipments , so we can only assume its something in transit , i think maybe the odd tube is being subjected to more heat than the film can handle , therefore some sliding going on with the carrier paper , we only ship 1mtr orders in tubes now , anything more has a much larger box so’s not to roll too tightly (maybe this also was an issue) .

Tark has had the effected area replaced and has left good feedback , we would never let anybody down , nor do we lie to get a sale….

only downloads would be updates to maps etc , unless you need speed traps and postcodes (think 300 has codes anyway)…

as for windows 98 , i dont think it will be a problem , as the tomtom has an sd card in it , all you need to able to do is write to it , e.g if you connect the tomtom it adds itself as a drive letter , then drop files onto it , or any card reader will do the job , and sure that card readers are good on 98…

so the minimum spec really is a USB port !!

tom tom for me , tried the pda version first , then moved onto the dedicated version….

i must agree , they can be a distraction though , i seem to go into a trance and do anything it asks me to….
the worst is coming to a set of traffic lights and i want to turn right….
a demanding voice tells me “turn right now !!” , i find myself nearly tricked into taking the turn without checking the red light !!

you can get a bit carried away with making sure you dont miss a turn , although i shouldn’t as it we re adjust the route anyway….

i would be lost without it though , more often than not , directions i get from customers have something missing , so i always ask for the postcode, i plot via that only , this doesn’t always work , but you can bet i’m not far away when i ring them up saying i’m lost….

i think another advantage to satnav is potential fuel saving…….

i drive about 300 miles a week , i recon without the satnav i’d probably end up doing more like 400 in the area i live , thats about £500 a year wasted.

another advantage is when i use it for places i know how to get to , strange i know , but if i’m running late , the customer calls me , or i call them , i can give them a pretty good eta….

one pet hate for me on the tomtom though , is its shape , filliping awfull , hard to find a pocket big enough , it needs to be a bit more shallow (like me i suppose)

January 31, 2006 at 10:48 am in reply to: Making Number Plates Advice Please

I have the oki system , and find it very quick and simple….

for white badge areas on yellow plates i apply white vinyl , none sticky side down , so the surface of my plate is still sticky all over , works a treat as long as you design your printed acrylic around it…

i dont use jigs for lining up etc
    i remove all the backing
align by eye , placing gently onto stick plate
rub a line down the short middle
place hard rubber hand roller on the rubbed center point
re lift one side of the acrylic
roll down to the outside edge as i re-lay the acrylic
    repeat for the other half
this then goes through an old large washing mangle (loads of pressure on the old ones (got it off ebay , postage was more than the mangle itself) the pressure is that high i can hardly get the handle turning to start with!!

    sorted

i’m not saying mine is the best , but it works for me after loads of faffing about……

first job i did was my car and the wifes , so i could see what happened to them long term , was worried that bubbles may appear over time , i see so many 20k+ – 6 month old cars driving round with bubbled number plates , i’m sure this happens after they have bought the car……but i can safely say , my plates will be good enough for any car SO FAR , 10 months on , and no change in looks……

i would suggest Microsoft Word , then move what you have learnt to Frontpage at a later date…

Using word is very easy , just lay out your pages as you’d like them to look , no coding needed at this stage….the only bit you need to suss out then is linking (i can do this if you like ,5 min job as long as your pages are ready)….

Only problem with creating websites in word is that they end up a little slower to load once on the net compared to most others , but if your site is going to be simple then i wouldn’t worry about it…..

    http://www.vistadevalle.co.uk/

site above was created in frontpage , word would have done just the same job , its only the links at the bottom that would be a bit confusing to a novice…but to be honest not hard to pick up…

The hardest bit if your not sure what your doing is to get it up to the net…

Also you obviously need some web space , or a least a domain name that can be re-directed to somebody else’s webspace……

there are loads of tutorials out there , had a quick look , and this one doesn’t look to bad http://www.learnthat.com/courses/comput … ord7.shtml

AOL are getting crafty as well , they have devised there own drivers for supported broadband boxes , in other words , if you dont have one of there supported modems , you wont get full speed……

Signs is secondary for me , mobile computer repairs to the domestic the market is my full time bit , although its not very busy at the moment , i have had 2 jobs so far that i have installed a recommended modem , downloaded aol’s drivers , and get 4 times the speed back again….

I think i know why they have done it …

AOL push themselves out to people with little knowledge of pc’s in my mind…

Therfore probably get a lot of support calls

there support center cant handle every make of router out there , so they limit you to a few , and just to make sure you only use the recommended – the routers need there driver to connect to AOL at full speed..

All makes there job easier , and they probably have good deals with the modem suppliers for doing this…

they are also less likely to have people giving up and closing there account with AOL because they cant help with setting up a “jo bloggs” router…..

good think about flash is its the same as frontpage in the way that you can use one page as a template for another page and so on , and in effect just make links to the other pages…..

Going back to the break in thing….

I feel the “not having a sign” bit , is a distraction to make you feel that you are in the wrong a little , if your feeling in the wrong your not going to press the matter any further , copper can close the case off….

In other words “Coppers hate the paperwork” , and putting you off wanting to chase it up the next day gets him out of the loop !!

hi , have been swatting this up a little…..

not good news for me as my budget is about one eighth of the price i’d get one for…

looks like old machine need an after coat with a laminator (not ideal , and not very cheap)

it also seems that “outdoor” printers haven’t been around very long , or should i say eco solvent inks etc…

so an old printer , as you say Carrie , i’m not gunna find……

my path led me to one machine , that can replace my cutter , and print to my hearts content….

    Roland Uniform Cadet……

maybe in a year or 2 these guys will be old , and within my reach…

i do try searches , as i did with this one , but i always seem to get a huge amount of post coming back , and never find what i want…

i’ll have to experiment with searches a bit more , i’m 99% sure though i couldn’t limit my search to “file swap” , and thats why i didnt come across them…..

good job though , and Marekdlux , your dragon is just the ticket

    Dave…..

When i said drive sizes , i meant getting a backup system to cover the size of drives these days….

    Ya know , buying a DAT drive to cover 250gb isn’t cheap……

And to be honest , any backup systems (like tape) doesnt do a drive image thats bootable…

although its not gunna work for everybody , a second drive , that ghost does a complete image to (inc boot) is the best way for me….

if my primary drive goes down , yank it out , change my second drive to primary via jumpers , and i’m off again in 15mins…..(grab a new drive , lop it in as secondary , and start imaging again)

there are not many backup solutions that are this easy , a lot of them require you to get at least back to the operating system , and the backup software you where using + the drivers for your backup device , before you get to “restore”…..

But , so far , i have not tried USB one touch backup systems , reason is as above , getting it back isnt as easy as putting your secondary drive as primary without having to dig out Win disks & drivers……

I found a prog once , that would use 2 IDE drives as a mirrored pair….

it worked , but say i edited a 50mb picture , i had to wait for it to save twice…..i need to move faster than that !!!

    ghost for me………

i keep meaning to get myself a proper backup device , but with drive sizes these days , nothing is cheap….

so what i have done to try and cut the cost is buy a copy of GHOST…

i have another drive the same size as my master in the machine….

this is set to backup every evening after i have gone to bed

GHOST is £35 , second drive was £50….

    just a thought…….

I wish these tips could be used with t-shirt vinyl……

i have a 13 piece football kit staring me in the face here….

have to first block out original text with a white oblong , then press the new company name over the top , and add very small “vehicle repairs” underneath..

biggest prob is the company name and the oblong , there larger than my press , so have to do this bit in 2 steps

    13 oblongs x 2 presses
    13 company names x 2 presses
    13 “vehicle repairs” 1 press

    = 65 presses & a whole lot of weeding

    I owe the guy a favor , so only a £50 job…….

Still not a happy man though…..

i may be barking up the wrong tree here…..

but tell me this , are you saying when you try and open them , acrobat comes up and then gives an error ?

if so , one of 2 things could be going on here….

    1. sounds daft , but do you have corel loaded , if not , it will try and open in the next best program

    2. if you do have corel loaded , are your associations set right , i.e. , in explorer , find your saved file , right click , properties , and check that “opens with” is the correct program…an easier way around this is to open corel first , then use “file” “open” to load in your file….

Dostępny jest w rolkach o szerokości 56, 86 i 117 cm, w kolorach: białym, żółtym, czerwonym, niebieskim, zielonym i czarnym oraz w białej wersji dwustronnej (z przekładką).

    it only comes in 56cm , 86cm & 117cm

Don’t you think we could be accused of being greedy though?

I’m not even classed as in the sign trade really , I’m just doing some bitz and bobs , but i can tell you this….

They are paying for more than materials and your time !!!

They are paying for a skill !!

I still work for an American computer company , our customers pay £1k per day for my services (£125 per hr) (i don’t get the money) and this is acceptable in the trade , I’m not even a “craftsmen”

    you are !!!

If you gave the vinyl and the use of your cutter to a guy that doesn’t know what he is doing , how long will it take him , divide them hours across your £80….

Everybody i have spoken to thinks it takes a good day to do a simple ish sign job on a van say, if you can do the job quicker , i don’t feel it should be cheaper !!

The find that customers imagine how long it would take them to do it !!!

    Cancel this guys…..

Just looked through my offcuts , and i have used 651 before …..

These banners are mainly for fates and charity do’s , so these people are on a tight budget……

But the banner i made for my advertising has 651 as its main large font , and has been outside for about 4 months with no probs….

I also have a rolled up one that a guy hasn’t come back for that still looks the biz , that’s been there for 2 months….

I’ll take my chances……i do advertise them as budget banners anyway……

Like you say , if anybody want more than this , then I’d outsource digital anyway , i find that anything more than a simple few words , on a banner any more than 12ft, I’d be better off outsourcing…

Although maybe i should change that to anything over 6ft , as that’s the length of my bench…..kitchen floor after that , flippin tiles !!!
