    I’m looking for advice

I’d like to get a bit of a list together of makes and models of entry level vinyl/banner printers but “old” models.

There are lots of wide format printers out there , but as they are out of production now , having a really tough job trying to find out if they can print to banner vinyl….?

    Any help would be cool…

    Cheers , SD

I have read your post Steve, but probably like many others outsource our printing so cant give any recommendations on an ideal second hand printer so did not think there was any point in replying …….

In my opinion, I would think it probably best to do some research, compile a list of printers that you think may do the job you want it to and then post which makes/models you have come across and then ask peeps views on those? Most people I should think have a relatively new machine …….. well from what I know of most members here most have only recently jumped into the printing sector themselves, so are probably not aware of any other printers other than the newish ones such as the versacamm & cadet that they own????

    😀

    Hi Steve,
I’ve been contemplating moving into the printing market too, but wouldn’t entertain a secondhand machine.

I believe the outlay for a new cadet or versacamm is around 10k. It’s a lot of money, but you’d get guarantees and back up from the suppliers.

Until I know that I can make the machine pay on a weekly basis, I am quite happy to out-source my requirements to other members from the boards.

There’s a mountain of knowledge on this site from people that have previously discussed this topic in other threads at length. Tap in versacamm or banner printing in the search at the top of the page and see what comes up.

Whenever I’m looking for info or pricing help I make a coffee, do a search and sit back and read !

    All the very best,

    Cheryl

hi , have been swatting this up a little…..

not good news for me as my budget is about one eighth of the price i’d get one for…

looks like old machine need an after coat with a laminator (not ideal , and not very cheap)

it also seems that “outdoor” printers haven’t been around very long , or should i say eco solvent inks etc…

so an old printer , as you say Carrie , i’m not gunna find……

my path led me to one machine , that can replace my cutter , and print to my hearts content….

    Roland Uniform Cadet……

maybe in a year or 2 these guys will be old , and within my reach…

    🙁

    Steve,

Maybe look into an equipment lease? This is what I did with my versacamm and makes it a little easier for us guys with a limited budget to buy a $15,000 machine. By the way, I’ve had the versacamm for about 2 months and was a little nervous about taking the plunge, but the machine has been printing non stop since it was delivered to my shop 2 months ago, so for now, I would have to say it was a great investment. I’m making serious money with it and my poor plotter is barely getting used now. But a word of advice, definately plan on purchasing a laminator with the machine (laminating by hand sucks!). Good luck!

    Hi there…

You can print on lots of stuff with great results with an Epson printer but the cost will be quite high and you will not have the duribility of other printing methods. IIRC, the banner material must be coated with inflates your cost of production a great deal (I’ve actually seen coated banner product that cost 10x the cost of a basic Avery uncoated vinyl). Additionally, you would need to protect this banner print with a laminate which again inflates your cost. Even with all of this, the chances of your outdoor banner lasting as long as something printed with solvent or eco would be slim.

Don’t know if it’s happening in your area, but a lot of dealers are selling older trade-in Edge units for a fair price. You could also consider a Roland 500 series soljet. Some dealers around here are still selling them.

this is a pigmented based printer…..
basically its a wide format exhibition display, and photographic reproduction machine.

industry leader at what it does but it is not a signmakers choice in my opinion.

epson may say it prints onto banner, this could be paper based or in some cases they do a pvc which is printable but it is very expensive and again not really designed for external use.
