• XP refresh fault,

Posted by Hugh Potter on September 14, 2005 at 5:06 pm

ok, have a couple of annoying faults on the laptop right now and i cant seem to get rid of them,

firstly, the page refreshes itself automatically about every 15 seconds, as you can imagine, this is a PITA for when ya wanna use the back button !

second, when i’m in hotmail (funnily its only on one account) it seems to be comstantly doing some kind of ‘search’ in th lower progress (?) bar, everytime i hit the return key it then searches for the last letter of phrase i’ve written, and then goes off to MS homepage grrrr !! it did start to do it on my bt email too, but i somehow cured that one, i say cured, but i have no idea what i did !

i imagine its something in the browser / internet options for specific sites, but cannot seem to find the fault, help please ?!!?

That’s funny Hugh (not really) but I have a problem on this site last two days. The back button does not work until about the third click, it is only on this site though. 😕

i first noticed it on this site, but it seems to be on others too,

the f5 key seems fine, i’ve just used it and wiped my reply form clean ! i must be honest and admit to hitting all kind of ctrl alt and a key to try stop it searching !

its all just getting on my nerves now, i think the search thing started when i leant on the keyboard accidentally, hence i dunno how i did it !

in the two mins it’s taken to write this, the pages has refereshed a dozen times !!

wheres dave rowland when ya need him, i bet he’ll know all the shortcuts !

    hey guys, im here

There is no trickery to cause that in IE!, first I must ask if there is anything across the top.. like a Google Search, Yahoo toolbar, etc., these things can cause issues.

The other thing that can cause trouble on a laptop is the touchpad, sometime the heat from your hands presses the touchpad and causes the mouse to Click or move, but not F5 – refresh,

Pretty sure rob is only using animated GIFs and the only javascript here is the acutal forum. Cant see any other hacks here.

If you fail to sort , you could consider using http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
It is spyware free and only allows certain browser-attachments to operate, or alternativly, you could run http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan Pandascan free online scanner to see if something has attached itself the browser. Good scanner that.

i had a load of probs last week when my norton anti virus subscription ended, ‘m not usually scepticl but it did this last year too ! so i suspected at first that it was nortons idea of getting extra business ! however, i’ve just been thru the system with spybot, aswell as norton and it all seems clear, i dunno,

re the touchpad, i rarely use it these days, i have an external opti mouse which i use 90% of the time, so i don’t think it’s that,

    hmmmm !

I also have the problem of having to hit the back button three times before it will actually go back a page …. thought it was just me …. so glad someone else mentioned it too :lol1: secondly, I no longer see the full web page address at the top of the page in the address bar …… I now only get the main address of https://www.uksignboards.com on every page I go into …. I dont get the text after the forward slash anymore?

interesting.. I enter the site with a favorite https://www.uksignboards.com/index.php and I am auto-sign on with IE 6.0 and fully updated with XP Pro SP2

Click link and tell me if you get the same problems.

Lets see if it is a URL masking problem that Rob web guys have done, i noticed the URL doesn’t get updated if I type the website direct https://www.uksignboards.com.

Infact, why is the site set at URL masking, how do you make Favorites if it is on.

Off Daves index link I can see the full address of each page …. but if I use the direct addy of just .com I cant see the full address. This has only happened over the last two days though.

think its only https://www.uksignboards.com that is masked….& forwarded to https://www.uksignboards.com/index.php

so https://www.uksignboards.com/index.php is the one the search engines are gunna hit…as it is the front page with all its meta info intact…

I haven’t really seen that type of masking before, it is 1&1’s In2site frame that is apparently the page, I guess this is what is causing the havoc with the Back button and refresh for hugh, reading the source, it think it checks the URL for variables, then checks browser version, then opens a new window from http://connect-[variable].insite.asc-server.com… then uses a Frameset to display this forum (somehow)

Rob is this for real or have we had some hackers here?
Update: Rob, I have figured out what this is, very interesting and supprised what you are doing!

I have a computer shop and come across weird shit all the time The first thing to do is go to microsoft.com and download ms antispyware its in beta testing at the moment so its free but is capable of restoring your browser setting and also tell you if something is trying to change them. In the advanced part it gives a better picture of what is loading at startup and whether it’s a known application this may help with your problems. But you have nothing to loose in trying.

there was a program that comes with my server that allows me to interact with every single visitor registered or not. a 2 way chat program that detects each time a person visits the site.
anyway, i activated it a few nights ago and forgot to deactivate after i had a wee look at how it worked.
i deactivated it when these replies came in on this thread. that was yesterday or day before so all should be fine, IF that was what was creating the problem. 😕
regardless, if you have bother using this site, please let us know, if not to this thread then email me. we are still working hard in the background of the site with another new area that is about to open. so any probs let us know now so we can address them at the same time. 😀

    thank you. 😉

edit : reckecked and five more there ? removed again and updating the spyware before another reckeck !

edit 2, just downloaded spywareblaster3.4 (freeware recc’d by spybot), it blocks spyware, or so it claims, in advance !
