  • has anybody ever seen carbon viny for under £5 a meter?

Posted by Steve Dawson on June 6, 2007 at 2:51 pm

Hi all , i have reading though a lot of posts about Carbon vinyl , most are highly priced from what i can see , but i’d like to try this stuff , but a budget version , i have a few boy racers that come to me for stuff , and they just haven’t got enough pocket money to cover the prices i have seen.

so my question , has anybody ever come across this stuff for under £5 a meter ?

    cheers , steve

i use coburns carbon fibre, 1-10mts is about £8 per metre + vat, i only use it for one customer, it’s a pig to get the cutting depth / pressure right, it’s a foil type vinyl (like their rainbow chrome film), and it has a very thin backing paper, cut too deep and you’ll find it near impossible to weed, cut to shallow and it won’t weed, or it’ll lift easily, it’s ok on big stuff, but on small lettering of around 10mm, it’s a nightmare, i charge a guy £2.20 per decal (his basic logo, name and website addy) around 6×3", so a metre works out around £70, but if you don’t get the cut right, you’ll certainly have to work for it !

i haven’t found cheaper yet, and and seriously considering transferring the film to a thicker backing paper before i cut next time !

thanks hugh , i think i know the type of stuff you mean , a bit like the polimer chrome oracal stuff , or a bit like tin foil !! , for some reason i thought it would have been more like vinyl , printed , and easy to work with !!

pm me your email address and i’ll sent you over a carbon pattern file, if you want it that is ! Nick Walker and i drew a carbon pattern by measuring and copying the style, it’s the more simple weave style, but could be printed, we wanted it to have a fade in it, hence doing it in this style, as a vinyl it’ll be alot easier to cut, but obviously not so cheap unless you print yourself, i’m soon gonna make the other style weave as that’s what my customer will want when i do his race car.

Just reading this thread gave me a thought about the cutting depth……

….. If you had to laminate the vinyl to increase the thickness would that not help with the weeding?

just a thought, use it, don’t use it 😕

hi Warren, the problem i’ve found with it is not the material itself, more the thickness of the backing paper, it’s just too thin, too deep and it stays stuck to the lettering and tears, to shallow and the letters lift too easily, even when i got it about right the other day, i ended up holding down loads of letters with the back of the scalpel as i weeded around them, horrible stuff !

ahh so it is, sorry! Pity because it’s a quality material with none of the problems mentioned above.

no disrespect mate but, too expensive for you? by that i take it you mean your customer?
If you cant find low costing carbon fibre, what chance has a boy racer or the like?
if your customer wont pay the going rate, tell them to blow… do not get involved with time wasters or under sell yourself to save "them" a few quid. its these type of customers that have our trade working for bugger all…
anyway, not sure if this will help as I don’t know if its the same stuff as i have never used it, but grafityp do a carbon fibre which i believe can be bought by the metre, but dont quote me on that. 😉

Hello all, I have been approached by a Ferrari garage to wrap the front splitter on several Ferrari f40’s. The customer has shown me a sample of Carbon vinyl that looks very much like the real thing. The sample came from the person that used to do this for him, alas that person cannot be contacted. Ive been looking around all the suppliers and although most claim there’s is realistic they are all pretty much black with printed silver squares!!. The real stuff i’m looking for has a more diamond shape pattern to it. Does anyone know where i can find something like this and not the run of the mill boy racer stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
