    Great book for beginners and people that have already been in the business. Probably a little more expensive since it would have to be shipped over seas, but its well worth it. I got lucky when i ordered mine a few years back, i thought I was getting the paperback version and the place sent me a hardcover. $18 USD on Amazon from a reseller, it was pre-owned but flawless.

    We bought 2 of the Rollepro’s when they first released them over here. Only works with hi-performance case & wrapping films for starters, cal film just got a ton of bubbles and wrinkles. It does work, but our guys used them for about a month and a half before they found their way back into the storage closet. Really didn’t make the job any faster, but they said their hands weren’t as tired as they normally get from pounding the rivets on the trucks with the rivet brushes.

    Molly (the one in the green shirt obviously lol) came out to our facility to do our ICS Warranty survey and I cannot even begin to tell you the amount of knowledge that lady has regarding our industry — amazing. The EZ RS product is quite impressive.

    Its not the easiest thing in the world, but its not a science either. I will try to put a small tutorial together (cant promise you within the next day or so but when I have it I will share it).

    unfortunately most of the perforated window films aren’t rated for 3 years even with the over laminate. As a matter of fact, the over laminates for these applications weren’t even made with the sole purpose of UV protection, the over laminates were to prevent dew and moisture from building up in the perforations thus preventing it from getting under the adhesive and lifting the graphics. Read carefully through the manufacturers specs for this material for solvent applications because the only stuff I have found that was 3 years was all screen print material. The window perf on our shop vehicles has been on for about 2.5 years now, minimal fade even for where these vehicles have been and the weather they have traveled through but, no warranty on them (not like it matters, we can just reprint them lol) but we wanted to leave it on as long as possible to see for ourselves how long it can last an still look presentable.

    I really do appreciate all the kind words 😀 very inspiring, however I don’t think that anyone should feel that their work is anything less than fantastic because of this lol, we all started somewhere, we all find our inspiration somewhere and I really hope that everyone finds my work inspiring so that it could help better themselves or give them new ideas for design. I will have to put together a portfolio of my work from the beginning, that way you can see the progression, believe me — i have taken some serious beatings in design critiques lol, they always hurt (sometimes more then the others) but you just have to take it in stride and progress from it. Sometimes I think a design is awesome only to have a client shoot it down in 10 seconds after i spent 10 hours on it! its hurtful, but usually nothing personal. I enjoy 2 main things out of design, seeing my work come to life from a sketch, to the screen, and then in person…and hearing that my work has inspired someone else to come up with an outstanding design and receiving praise for it =) So I would like to encourage all of you to challenge yourselves and create work that will receive comments like you have all posted for me today =) Thank you all 😀

    hmm thats just the name provided to me, I do have a photo of the one they are talking about, perhaps someone has something comparable to it? i just want to give the client a nice mock-up of it. For the real deal I will most likely go to the client and do all the photos an measurements for an accurate template.

    Sounds like the paint needs to cure. We have had problems with RVs that came from the paint booth to us and even after a week we had issues with the vinyl adhesive separating from the vinyl itself. Who knows what type of catalyst and how much was added to the paint to speed up curing times too, they might not have known this would be decaled so quickly so they didn’t bother adding more.

    We have had banding from heater settings too high / too low, variations in the temperature in the print room (now climate controlled), using the stock profiles that came with the machine even for the correct media, scrim banner fiber that got stuck under the print-head carriage. There’s a lot of things that can cause it.

    looks like it might be the fat version, its definately the font though, I use it frequently on club flyers.

    John, I dont know about the Cadet but I know both our HP9000 and 10000 cannot use a USB to Wi-Fi interface and the same goes for the Mimaki-CGFX160. I am assuming you wanted to use the wireless print server hubs. On top of that none of those machines can use a cable longer then 15′ without using a USB signal repeater.

    One thing I must say made a huge difference was the addition of a humidity control system. I doubt it helped with outgassing …but the prints dry much faster, our materials are at the proper storage humidity and it is just much more comfortable to work in during the summer months — even when the air is on we used to be able to feel how humid the air was but now its perfect. Might be an investment worth looking into.

    we usually print rolls at a time so they are usually wound up by the take media take up device, we have 2 external IR heaters and one row of CPU fans to keep steady air flow (never put fans up high where the print head moves, it will dry the heads out, put them low and on a low setting) when the roll is done we stand them upright on their endcaps they come with, and unwind them so they are loose and can dry better. Let them sit for a minimum of 24 hours then they are laminated / clear coated.

    one thing you may certainly want to take into consideration is putting a drop ceiling in for your printing and office area…it will take much less to heat in the winter and cool in the summer and worth the money up front because you save that much in energy costs. We did that to ours last year and I cannot tell you how much our gas bill went down because those big industrial heaters use A LOT. We kept the install bay open for obvious reasons (trailers, box trucks)

    When i bought the Wacom Graphire I thought it was terrible. Didn’t keep up with my drawing therefore crippled the workflow and the whole reason I purchased it. When the Intuos 3 came out my friends father who does architectural CAD drawings had one and I used it briefly. What improvements from my previous model. Since then I have bought 3 of them and purchased the Cintiq 21UX and haven’t looked back since. Don’t be discouraged though, it takes time to get used to. Took me about a month and I have drawn my entire life, you need to get used to the feel of it in different programs too.

    when you export to a PDF, there are certain options like what type of PDF to use (PDVx/1a) or whatever that shadows and stuff tend to use.

    they are the walls of the cubicles that one of our ad agencies have. All of the walls are covered with a mural of photos from events they have sponsored and hosted in the past. They are big in the college/youth scene so a lot are pictures of concerts, college events, etc. The built in LCD screens also have photos of the events that switch every 10 seconds or so to a new photo from a different event.

    There really is nothing to it, for our machines you just go into the setup preferences for the printer and turn the media take up on then there are a few settings to set the speed of it and how tight it will wind up the material which is a must for large banner runs.

    hmm, dunno it came with all of our machines. we use them all the time except for extremely short runs and we only do short runs on one machine anyhow soooo. it helps a lot when you constantly need to do several rolls of printing if you are doing fleet work and definately large banner runs.

    industry standard applications for doing such work were already mentioned, QuarkXPress 7 and Adobe InDesign. If you design in Microsoft Publisher you might be setting yourself up for additional fees come time to send the files to press, Publisher is good if you want to make a nice yard sale flyer or advertise your next fundraiser…other than that =/. Photoshop will do great layout work but it will not be a functional catalog so to speak. All resolutions must be 300ppi + for the best image quality.

    The situation coulda went either way for better or worse. You could have let them use your facility and looked like a hero to the client and in the same respect the guy could have gotten injured while working in your shop on someone elses vehicle that you weren’t covered by and now you are paying for their medical bills…not sayin thats the case, but it would be somethin to keep in mind. Everyone is out to sue somebody over here so you have to be careful of who works in your facility.

    Your right in what you say though, there is no need to upgrade at the moment. Let them sort out most of the problems over the next year or so and then have a look again, prices will have come down a lot by then as well.

    I run vista on one laptop and will continue to do so but I wouldn’t use it for anything important to me at the moment. The machine actually runs slower than a similar machine I have running XP. The one with vista installed has a faster processor and almost twice as much memory but runs slower because of all the gadgets that Microsoft have built into vista.

    exactly…if Microsoft could take its fancy looks with its added security features and not make it such a resource hog even when you have 2+ gigs of ram & and 3.0+ GHZ processor they would have somethin big goin on.

    Im sick of Vista and we only run it on one of our test computers we use to try out stuff before implementing it into the production computers…Great…it looks pretty…but eats up all your memory doing stupid things even in a selective startup where I disabled half of the garbage it tries to load.

    Unlock the layer you have the crop marks in and double-click it. Layer properties will come up. Make sure that you have the check box ticked for "Print" if that isn’t checked off then the layer will only be visible on screen and won’t print. With this being said, I usually just combine all my artwork and the crop marks into one layer set the layer properties and then make a layer on top of that for the cut paths. Hope that helps.

  • I have used Avery 7 year and 9 year vinyls. I am also using a 7 year reflective on my personal calipers without clear-coat on top. They have been on for 2 years now (but the car doesn’t see any bad weather days) so I don’t really know what rain would add into the equation. I have also used cheaper 4 & 6 year vinyls for applications on headlight housings and I haven’t gotten any calls that say they have failed.

  • not sure if this is of any use but I have cut several hundred decals for brake caliper applications for car clubs / race teams and never had problems. Im not wrapping the calipers but we have done ones that say camaro, corvette, porsche etc they hold up fine as long as the surface is prepped. Most of the decals were being applied to cars with big brake kits for racing so they were already painted/powdercoated. I think a lot of the guys were also embedding them into a clear coat after they were applied.

    yes in photoshop its called a layer mask and in illustrator you want to create a clipping mask. this will block out the design from running out of the outline and onto the windows, tires, etc.

    Definitely stick to XP for the time being especially with all the new versions of software being released at the moment. Upgrading production equipment should be done with caution and should be tested before jumping into. Vista is still mess when it comes to sorting out bugs especially in proprietary software programs such as Flexi, Signlab, FineCut etc…they are not Adobe so fixes are going to come at a slower rate…unfortunately.

    its an issue that they are still working out. FineCut 7 on Vista with CS2 works fine. FineCut 7 on Vista with CS3 has issues. FineCut 7 on XP with CS3 works fine. thats the problems they are trying to sort out. I am sure its going to come down to some silly DLL problem. I remember the same problem happened when XP came out and Mimaki started to have problems with Onyx CUT Server.

    i was told those fumes from our machines affect your short term memory…

    wait…what was the question again?

    for real though, all joking aside, in our building with the machines and liquid laminator there were summer days last year when the fumes were unbearable and made us light headed. I also developed a mysterious cough that the doctor diagnosed as an upper respiratory infection (i seem to be very susceptible to these since i got one when i used to work in an autobody doing airbrushing) the whole thought on the fumes worries me, not so much right now…but 10 years down the road since it seems like just about everything causes cancer these days. Since we put an addition on our building we have since then also installed air purifiers and an extraction system to pull remaining fumes out of the building.

    Brothersoft Viewer 0.8 if i remember correctly is a free one.
    IrfanView 4.0 is another free one but is geared more towards technical/cad drawings although it will open .eps

    One thing I would definately look into is the status of your warranties when it comes to doing anything Fleet printing. Avery & 3M both have released white papers on this subject about MegaInks & Triangle inks voiding their ICS and MCS warranties regarding fleet graphics. Just something to keep in mind.

  • maybe this needs some clarification…

    I’ve done a lot of wraps before involving designs that need to match up from the sides to the hoods into the bumpers, but I have a very intricate design that I need to make flow perfectly from one part of the car to the next. From the roof, down the sail panels, into the sides, up the front bumper, and the hood…its turning into a puzzle essentially (the design is not a puzzle). What is the best way you have found to lay the graphics out so when installing them or sending them out for installation there is no questions of matching pieces up.

  • no Robert, you understood me properly. It has a design that runs throughout the bus. It is symmetrical in the front where it starts and then meets in the rear (obviously we would start installation from the rear and work to the front though for the seams in the tiles)

    hmm not sure of the recycling part but we do find ways to use those pieces in other manners so thats kind of recycling/reuse. The wax liners we use to slip/sheet large runs of POP displays, between banners when we roll them up to ship, packing materials etc. The foam pieces and sintra we give to the local school for their art class, they are always thankful of it and find uses for it. Theres also a local autobody shop that is always willing to take our liner paper from us because he uses it as a spray shield to protect body panels from over spray instead of buying rolls of paper to do so. Which works out well because whenever we need bodywork done on some of the trucks we do or new rivets he is always there for us.

    So…there are definately uses for it to be reused…but as far as making it go away… not really sure. I know for the vinyl the recycling plant uses an acidlike dip for it to dissolve it, but it then has to be in a room with air purifiers because of the toxins it gives off.

    I always found it amazing that back in the 70’s and 80’s New York City started a citywide campaign to prevent graffiti and tagging and now some of the largest ad agencies in the city are using the best graffiti artists around to promote urban clothing lines, energy drinks, etc…

    thanks for the post =) ill hang onto that one for the future. the customer actually ended up wanting me to redo his logo that looks like his daughter might have sketched it out with a crayon….drawing with her feet…butttt i managed to clean it up and add a little bit of "design" to it lol. Just one of those days here at work ya know….I have the bay doors open because its gorgeous outside…except i see 2 RV’s, 1 Bus, 5 ice cream trucks, 2 cars, and a box truck that all need designs for….and they want them as soon as possible :lol1:

    As Robert has stated, starting from scratch without prior knowledge to doing HTML/XML is a very large task to jump into. You would be best suited buying a pre-made template from one of the 1000’s of template places online. With this being said, the industry standard for web-design is Adobe Dreamweaver (formerly Macromedia Dreamweaver) Since the CS3 version was just released I am sure you could pickup the previous version for much less money now and still achieve what you want to do. Hope this helps.

    The best and easiest way to scale a car is to take a measuring tape, run it the length of the car stand back and take a photo. Then do that for all the detailed sections. Blow it up to the overall length in photoshop and make the layer at like a 25-30% opacity and lock the layer (its easier to work on then) Chances are finding templates for cars older then 1993 will be difficult, its not to mainstream. No templates beat good old hard measurements that you took yourself. That way if its wrong, theres only one person to point the finger at 😉 if you do the windows its always a good idea to add about 5" each side of bleed so its easier to move around and gives you a little more play room. Windows usually have a curve to them or taper off so that extra material helps.

    My best advice to you is to take on Photoshop piece by piece little by little. There is no way to tackle every aspect of this software in one night, they have been developing the software since 1988…they have added exponential amounts of features since then lol so there is a lot to handle. I really would not turn my back on this type of software because of its power and just about endless creativity options. One thing I have learned with Adobe products in general…there is always more then one way to do something in their software. If you aren’t comfortable doing it one way, do it another. I would set some goals aside each night when you have some spare time…maybe only 15-20 minutes each time, but write down what you want to learn in the software, then look up online how to do it. There are millions of Photoshop tutorials. The learning curve is steep, its not easy, and the tool bar and palettes look frightening at times but the rewards will speak for themselves in the end by staying with Photoshop.

    Brian, do you have the actual scaled templates for those vehicles I meant? or do you have the artwork for them to make the templates. I know they aren’t a highly requested vehicle since they are all discontinued cars and the people who own them aren’t wrapping them but they people who race them are =) These are cars I need to turn out 100% perfect show quality because they are going to have sponsors on them, be on TV etc. So it needs to be exact ya know? I have access to all the cars but I was looking to save time.

    Exactly like Dave has mentioned. Especially since you are using a bulk ink system and not an OEM setup you will most likely need your machine profiled for all of the materials you print on to get accurate reproductions of those files. There are tutorials out there, buttt they are useless unless you have the profiling equipment (very pricey if you only print on a few different medias) your best bet would be to call X-Rite or Gretag-Macbeth and ask them to locate you a certified profiler in your area. This person will come in for a reasonable fee (usually) and calibrate your machine using all the medias you print on.

    err this is killin me tryin to find these cars, its race season and all four of those cars need to get wrapped in 2 weeks. Anyone know of any Japanese template packages out there? To make matters worse I just had a request to quote a Nissan Skyline R34. I know there is a template out there for this but in what package I don’t know. Let me restate though, I do not want someone to post these templates, i want to buy the packages they are in.

    Craig, just about all of the template software out for vehicles are based off a 1:20 scale so for your final cutting you need to scaled that @ 2000% and it will be full size. Tell us what software you are using and version and I am sure someone will be able to help in no time.

    Joe, I love your work — true craftsmanship. What part of upstate NY are you in? I am assuming its upstate NY since you said the new yorkers come there or are you in PA? How many years in the trade if I might ask —- just curious because my grandfather carved and did a lot of gold leaf work.

    agree 100% with you, especially companies like Adobe completely revolutionizing workflow by integrating all their software from InDesign-Photoshop-Flash seamlessly. If font companies start doing what LHF is doing its going to cripple that flow that Adobe is spending probably…billions on.

    the look like they might be from the ClipArt.com packages of vehicle/boat graphics. There is definately more then one vector graphic used in conjunction with other ones there though. ill see what i have thats comparable.

    Rich, if you have access to a steamer of some sort (Jiffy Steamer) i would definately use that. I used to tint cars while i worked in a custom autobody while in high school and this was the way to go. Straight ammonia and all purpose 409 cleaner work well too, just saturate the window with it and let it sit for about 10 mins, then soak them again an peel it.

    Hmm, is the parts that are not getting cut too close to the edge of the material possibly? Maybe you could post the file you are trying to cut so others could take a look at it to see if the file has any problems?

I bet that some of the sharing of these fonts are due to lack of knowledge and laziness to check the license, thats all i am referring to.     Your definately correct Shane. I will try and dig up an eBook i made a while back about fonts and how to use them, legal distribution issues, sharing etc. A lot of the major font foundries even have in the EULA agreements that it is also illegal to convert the font text to outlines/curves and embedding them in .pdfs as well. On a regular basis i deal with several well known American and Canadian ad agencies that constantly re-distribute very expensive fonts by packaging the job in a layout program like Quark or Indesign so it just goes to show you, everyone has done it, and everyone is guilty of it at one point or to some extent, but it doesn’t mean we should encourage it or continue to do so and a lot of the time it is probably done accidentally because the license isnt known unless you check the fonts properties. Maybe if the licensed fonts had a special OTF or TTF icon with like a lock over it, it would be even easier to tell what you can freely distribute and what you shouldn’t.

    Exactly, I am glad everyone is on the same page as me for the most part. I guess what is bothering me is how much I actually liked their fonts and how inacessible they are making them, and if they actually do work on your system you have to reload them eveeeeerytime. Face it, i have paid much more then the $35-90 a font they are asking here….Elsner+Flake Premium Type Collection retails for $5,200USD but you know what, this was paid off for in one job and then some…so who cares…like i said the people who seek these elite fonts are your average schmuck off the streets, they are dedicated professionals of the industry and they are paying top dollar to use these high quality fonts. I completely understand a lot of thought, creativeness, and time went into these fonts and the artists should be compensated 100% for them, but when you go this far…it makes you wonder what the real intentions are. just my .02 cents…feel free to comment

    i can tell you who isn’t buying any of their work until then…i finally got it working in Illustrator….took my laptop home after work…just booted it up, now they are gone again and needed to be "re-activated"…did that….now the same errors in Illustrator. Called them again on the phone…they are blaming it on my system. So just out of curiosity i brought their file over to my cousins house who is a photographer and has a few Macs and PCs as well…at first we thought…ok it works…maybe it was my systems….and then….crash. Restarted and the fonts were gone again.

    Chuck posted in there, doesn’t seem paranoid, just frustrated. He wrote a very nice response there, the only thing was when i contacted them i got a very snippy response, not once but twice…it wasn’t Chuck though i guess it was his sales people or other employees. He talks about how someone went around on eBay and sold the entire foundry on there for $50 but it was also packaged with Letraset, BitStream, House etc. House Industries tried this protection once too…failed miserably and they no longer try it because like we already said, the people who are going to use these fonts are going to buy them, not some 15 yr old "designer" editing his myspace.com page.

    I shouldn’t really say its just a font, they are works of art for the most part, they do take tons of time to create a really great one, but seriously. . . you pay $35-100 for a good font, probably 100 hours for some good ones. Microsoft creates an operating system, takes 4 years…people are pirating it before its even out…their solution, let them…when it comes to updating it, it realizes they have a bogus license number and it kills their usage…so why not do the same with the fonts, theirs no need to go through all this hassle and make people not want to deal with your company any more, especially graphics designers and sign makers…the same people who made your company what it is today.

    Great, its compatible with Office 2007…so i can use a $99 font in Word and Excel…because thats where i spend most of my time designing 🙄

    I did some further research on the matter and there are about 10 articles online right now, one is a 4 page post on typophile.com about how upset people are about this and how they wont refund or help. and like i said it wouldn’t be a problem if they just worked correctly or worked with my font managers. Instead i get an executable file that goes out to some server (hopefully secure) opens ports on my computer (it tried but my firewall alerts me first) and comes back with invalid security certificates. At the end of the day…its a font, nothing more nothing less, there are governments using less security to encrypt their e-mails for cryin out loud lol (not sure if thats a good thing).

    Caveat emptor. . . just make sure your systems are compatible first everyone, because I can tell you this, their refund policy is simple, there isn’t any.

    Letterhead Fonts are now available only in Postscript-flavored Open Type. This means that your software must support Open Type fonts. Open Type fonts work great in most Microsoft applications, SignLab 7.1+, FlexiSign 7+, CorelDraw 9+, Illustrator 9+, Photoshop 5.5+, InDesign 1.0+, Quark 4+, Freehand 10+, Gerber Omega 2.51+.

    only problem is it doesn’t work well with flexisign 7, crashes illustrator, quark doesn’t even show up, and our CNC software as well…tried on multiple machines with different configurations as well with the same results.

    We actually just built a printing room for our machines because the addition of the new machines made additional ventilation a must. All solvent no eco-sol machines so it was getting pretty bad. Each machine has their own air purification system but because of the outgassing after the media is rolling up the fumes were still pretty bad. We couldnt cut holes into the block at floor level so we had to install some commercial fans on the drop-ceiling to stir the air up into the extraction vents. We have the (3) printers (2) plotters and the computer work stations in there as well as our print media. This way everything is at the same operating temps and the media is at the same temp as the machines it will be used on. A commercial dehumidifier also is being installed this week to keep the humidity at reasonable levels in there. The heaters and the centeral air seemed to create a little too much humidity and in order to keep our MCS and ICS warranties we had to comply to the all the guidelines. One thing you might want to do is look into different types of lighting since you are now going to be printing, you need to make sure your colors are going to be accurate.

    If you said this two years ago about the e-mail address on the van i would have agreed with you 100%, but in today’s age with the almost seemingly endless technology available to us on the road, I cannot stress enough how many people are requesting their e-maill adresses on their vehicles. I will go one further, about 2 weeks ago I was stopped in a parking lot when i saw 3 identical company vans stopped for a bite to eat. They had their email addresses on them and some horrible lettering job done. I took out my Blackberry, e-mailed them PDF of our sales brochure and company information just to see if we would get a bite from them. Sure enough, Monday morning we got a call from them wanting their vans done immediately. Just my .02 cents.

    The van looks great, nice job (sorry for my ranting)

    Just keep at it Lee, you’ll find something you like =). If I had a dollar for every time a design i loved was shot down, I would be a rich man. Eventually I only had one feeling left and he died lonely lol now I have none so you can’t hurt my feelings my picking on my designs =P.
