MemberApril 12, 2007 at 3:03 pm in reply to: would Banner Vinyl go into the recesses ok on a Sprinter?I was not to worried about the matt, John I will be going into the recesses. The job is short term for the elections and there is always a tight budget. I saw an opportunity to possibly use up some banner. I have to do some photo wrapping but have this part of the job covered, never had a sprinter to work on before so vinyl has not been a problem. I do need the vinyl to stay put what would you recommend for the text part of the job.

The main problem is where a fixing lands on the edge of a piece of stone and the drill slides off in a different direction, some letters just will not match up with the stone as a direct hit. Being able to adjust the depth is a good idea and will get me over one hurdle. Maybe I Should look at a different kind of layout or style signage any help or design ideas will be very welcome.

If you go in with a higher price and get it wrong better to have lost the job than under price and buy the work. On the note of putting in a higher price you can always come down in price, also be sure to remind them that any other quote might not be like for like. Printed cast and laminate is not cheap however you go about it.

I got them here at a wrapping course in Ireland, not sure about the UK and yes they will mark the vinyl, i’m still learning little ways of making less marks not easy to explain more of a hands on thing, sorry could not be of more help.
Russ
-
They seem to glide over the material with more ease and you can apply more pressure.

I have the same question as Gary, I have a versacamm as well and need to print on to some flag type material. The flags only need a very short life as they are for a fund raiser, in this case banner will not do. Is it possible for the versacamm to print on this kind of material.

Hi George,

WOW what a fantastic response thank you all for the first class advice, I am now sure that the best thing for our business is a basic site that will showcase the work we have carried out. This will help us as mentioned mainly with potential new customers. Now do I have ago myself or farm it out, either way I now have some very helpfull guide lines to work with.

MemberJanuary 23, 2007 at 3:30 pm in reply to: do i wait until application tape dries on glass etch?Hi Owen,
I did my first large graphic in frosted just a couple of weeks before crimbo I applied dry and only because I have got use to applying vinyl before hand. If you can lay good areas of vinyl then have a go, if you have enough spare cut a second copy of the logo and give it a blast first, maybe use a window at your home or work place it always saves a red face. I will post the phoenix graphic, but it is not very clear in the photo.

first class and cleaver use of the water effect, handy to have someone to strip the parts even removing some badges has it’s moments. I have been using Arlon for afew months now and find it the most comfortable to use, not that I have tried everything on the market by any means. Really nice work in every aspect, I guess you will not be having to much trouble when the time comes to change the poly tunnel cover.

Hi Dave I think it could be Celtic it’s been that long now i’m unsure, the fonts disc I had got corrupted and i’m sure it was on that. I shall dig out some old stuff and see if there is any clues.
Thanks to all for your time and trouble
Russ
-
Dave you are right about cutting the tab, I only do it in emergency’s in the past 3 years I have done it only twice on both occasions it got me out of a hole.
Russ
-
Hi Tim
Sorry I do not, when we first started at this game with no understanding whatsoever, we just used anything without even learning about font names then our computer went t*ts up. Months after new computer was installed using the same fonts disc we could never find it, it just that I had this feeling it was called Kelt.
Russ
-
Thank you for your help looks like I have the wrong font name.
thanks again

if you over run the cart after cutting the tab you do get air in the line, this has happened to me before so I just do a quick couple of cleaning runs and it’s back to normal, trick is not to forget you have cut the tab.
Russ
-
There is a little sensor tab on the back of the cart if your machine bleeps to let you know that your cart is empty insert a blade and nip it off it allows to to finish a print run by quite a few meters.

first class in design and wrap, as regards you going on a training course from what I can see of the car back bumper I would be more than happy to come to you for training.
Russ

Hi Rob,
wraps look peach, do you fold edges or trim. I tend to do a combo of both depending the situation, also do you put a cut line in the panel recess after heat has been applied. Some vehicles where a panel has replaced a window have a visible rubber – silicone seal do you go over or trim each side of the seal. Sorry for all the questions.

It has to be said that in most cases you get what you pay for, only a few weeks ago a new customer called me for a price on some printed 8 x 4 sheets. I then had to weed out of him what he was using the sheets for and where they were to be located, with this info I gave him a price. He then quickly followed with a tone that I was a crook and he had other prices that were light years cheaper than me. I then explained exactly what materials and process that I had priced for based on the info that I had weeded out of him and suggested he go back to the other parties and price like for like.
We have now carried the above work and been paid at the price given also within the time limit he need the work to be completed, I may add that more work has been priced and agreed, this customer is not on my door step by any means.
I can tell you that depending on the supplied artwork I would be happy to wrap 2 sprinters using Arlon DPF 6000 and Arlon 3220 laminate for 3,800 sterling, but I would be even happier to do one at that price.

greetings one and all
not sure if this is correct, but after the install to eco-sol max inks my machine

As far as I am aware Arlon is MD7 (Seven ) The van I posted last week was the first time I have used it and as I said I am no expert, I have only done a few vehicles with big graphics. I applied all the graphics cold and used no heat whatsoever even in all the recesses, only after each moulded app did I apply any heat. I have to say that the main problems I had is with my own inexperience in wrapping.
Peter I will get back to you as to where I have been
Russ

squeegee marks just me being a bit heavy handed, teeth sparking and ar$e cheeks clenched. No app tape just laminate. I have to add a friend of mine is the designer i dont have those skills.

Really nice to see no net curtains in this pic, design has a get up and go feel to it and a slight touch of hippy, will you be getting a ladder rack.
Russ
-
Only one problem here for me and that is net curtains, I know I could be opening a can of worms here or as Hugh would prefer rag worms, but that net curtain took over the whole photo for me and became a complete distraction i’m not sure but it could even be twitching, cannot bring myself to look again. My advice would be to steer clear of this kind of backdrop when posting your work I must add the van looks good and don’y ask me about spelling.

Russ

To start with first class work mate and I feel that when you get a job that you can finish no matter how you got there and it looks as good as yours, wet or dry is not the main factor the end result and the experience gained are worth there weight in gold, thanks for posting really good to see.

Thanks for the demo Peter a great help and I will be using it in the future of that i’m sure, fantastic for image line-up. On the first picture the orange vinyl is showing a white strip with a clean cut, have you cut through the vinyl by hand without cutting the backing paper or i’m I still missing something.
thick as two short planks Russ.

Hey Brian I had a bit of a brain wave last night, does not happen often. At shows like sign uk they print out yards of media all day mostly on good material although it might not be premium cast it will still be good stuff to show of their machine out-puts, as far as I know they just bin it at the end of ther day. Why not see if you can get your hands on as much as possible and have a go at applying it to a vehicle that might be knocking about at least this way you can get a feel for it.

Hi Peter, and welcome the only brush I was given at 14/16 was a sweeping brush, let me tell you things have not changed much in our household.

The big jacks works for me, how do you scan from a brochure and get a sharpe picture like the one in the middle, still reading the overlap but thinking to hard cannot see the wood for the trees, will try again in the morning with new gumidge head on.
Russ

Many thanks for your comments, my van is next it’s been on the long finger now for well over a year, media from O’Sullivans Dublin.
Good point about the tiling Peter, funny enough I looked at the possibility of how I could make the join without picking up unwanted dust etc as the sheets are quite big. Getting an area clean was not the problem I needed a big square area to get the bonnet as one, I agree it would have made things a bit easier and given me more room to be able to manage the application. On the same hand I found some small bits more than a hand full, maybe doing the join over a piece of silicone paper might help any tips here Peter will be greatly appreciated. I will be booking myself onto a wrapping course asap, who is doing the best course and at the right price can anyone help with advice on where to go.Russ

I often find that I try to please my customers for there work and take time out of evenings and weekends to accommodate them a big mistake that I keep making. I for one should do exactly what Marcella say’s, she has hit the nail on the head.

Yes Andy, I have to say to my shame that over 50% of the credit has to be handed to Anita in every aspect of making and installing this sign, so the topic heading should read OUR FIRST MONOLITH it was one of those jobs that take over your mind even when we had finished working for the day. Now we just what to get our hands on another one.
The Ezy-taper was a great help and the designer took into account that we only have a 30" printer. The artwork came in files so we could print the items individually and the long vertical panels carry a merging very light blue to almost white area in the middle, this allowed us to get an overlap with out any stepping. Fully assembled it was not light and after all that work we only felt at ease once it was bolted into place.
Russ

Thanks for the comments guys I will put you in the picture as best as I can.
The system is Vista base & top plate Plus internal struts, the sheets are 2mm ally mill finish and hand cut to size. monolith 10ft x 4ft. Prints and assembly 1 day, cutting sheets and applying of prints and laminate 1 day, at this point a 4ft printer might have saved about half a day, to site and fitting including the letters 1 day, So 3 days but next time prehaps 2 days 2 people plus printing. There is of course all the hidden time of site visits, templates and meetings with the customer to add, the design was supplied. There is going to be soft wash of external up-lighting.Russ

Sorry for the late reply, thing to attend to here.
yes had my taper a while now and set it to work on the spot. The main reason I bought the taper was that I needed to laminate prints and had been looking to buy a machine that would suit my budgit and 30" machine.
As it turned out on the 11th hour I followed up on the taper, long story short I got the 1500mm taper.I have never used a laminater so did not know what to expect, what I can say is that the work we have carried out so far with it has just been a breeze. We have only flood coated and mounted so far, simply offer up your media turn the handle and do the hindge process and away you go, it really is EASY. All you need to do is open the box and stand it up and your ready to go.
I must add that the taper dose not seem much to look at when you think of modern laminaters, but it is simply a good old fashioned nuts and bolts bit of kit that needs no plug.
As regards the money for the taper you are paying for what it can do and not how it looks that just my added opinion.
My thanks go to Shane for his advice on the taper here on the boards.

Fantastic it’s full of life and has a big pick me up feeling, I wish I could think that way when looking a new vehicle job. Skeggie is just great I miss the pitch ‘n’ put, REAL FISH ‘N CHIPS and saucy post cards. We only lived a few miles away and would often come down in the evening with the kids.
I agree with shane I just love it.

Hi Martin, 1500 is the size I went for and had been in contact with them for quite few weeks before the show, and did the deal through the boards. it’s not been easy to wait as I have needed a laminater for some time now. The show was fine I found a few really good suppliers but did not give the show my full attention as the girls wanted to hit the shops, always the same when you make a visit to the city. May I add that both Warrick and Peter are down to earth guys, the simple fact is the machine works in a very simple manner and has confirmed everything that Shane has said. I was going to pay twice the cost for a machine with a plug on it.
Martin can you tell me your stand number.
Regards Russ

I was at the show on wednesday and watched the demo followed by having ago myself it was so easy that you think there must be something else to it, but not the case I paid of mine on the spot. Already taking new work in advance for it.

more that very good 😀 I had to read it twice 😳 then scrolled down to see that you had explained it 🙄
Russ
-
Well I will ask before Brian or Peter what about the second 😀
Russ
-
Hey Brian,
The rugby six nations always spells trouble, where do I start my dad is Scottish my mum Irish and i’m ENGLISH these games are never an easy time in our family.
The only thing i can add is that when Scotland beat England my dad has to get his wallet out and buy a round of drinks in 40 odd years I can count this event on one hand, i’m sure you know how he feels when it comes to a scotsman parting with his money so for me what ever the score it’s still a win 😀
Russ
-
Now that was a bloody good Question well done Brian.
Russ

Hi Steve, and welcome
Still waiting for your mug/convict shot, because when you add it this will take me and Dave Rowland off the top of the most wanted list 😀
