    Hi Marek

They are great machines, been using mine for a week now, and loving it!

I’ll probably be joining you in asking questions.

What do you think of the rip that comes with it?

    The VersaWorks software?
I have not had much of a chance to play around with it, I am printing my first “solo” job right now after reading all the manuals. It seems pretty straight forward. I have only ever used Gerber Omega software as a rip so it is totally different. I assigned my cutline in Illustrator. We’ll see how it cuts, it’s about 40% printed right now. I am taking pictures so I will try to post some up afterwards with comments.

I couldn’t get my cutline to work so that is something I will have to figure out on Monday with the tech.
Amazing color! I printed the same file up on the edge and I like the VersaCAMM better. The edge is limited on the dpi (300 for ours, 600 for Edge 2 and FX). I printed the file on the VersaCAMM at 740.

I think the cut line has to be marching ants style in the rip before it will cut

That’s right Goop, I remember the tech saying that….now how do I make them dance? I went by what it said in the manual. Oh well, like I said, he will be here Monday and I am sure we will sort it out.

the method I use for cutting, is in Coreldraw, add a colour to the palette, and call it CutPath. You only need to do this once.
Then when I draw a hairline round the item to be cut, change the hairline to that colour.
    Then export as an eps.
Using the rip, add a job to the job q (the eps file) and in the cut settings, have print & cut selected.
That’s how I was taught, and it works fine.

That’s what I did Martin (except in Illustrator). I made sure “print+cut” was selected, etc. I’ll follow up on Monday with what I did wrong.
In the VersaWorks software it includes color pallets you can save in your program (illustrator, corel draw, etc) for cutlines, basically it is just a spot color named “CutContour”, so it’s the same thing you do.
    -Marek
Edit: All my software/documentation says to call it “CutContour” in Illustrator, I just tried “CutPath” to see if that would work. No dancing ants. 😥
Actually, I’m not worried or sad at all. It will be sorted out Monday. Just have to trim out what I printed today by hand.

Marek, the name of the cut line has to be exact, including upper/lower case with no gaps.

if you loaded the palette straight into illustrator you shouldn’t have a problem. make sure there are no fills in the cut line shapes etc

The tech will be here on Monday to show me how to use it. I just couldn’t wait. Actually he was here on Friday and we did a sample print so I pretty much knew what I was doind already.
It was just under $20,000 USD.

We have had ours for about 3 months now, like you I have only really used composer up till now, the rip is very easy to use and the results are excellent, there are a few things they don’t tell you in the manual though. One of these is don’t trust the ink monitor cos it don’t work.

Yeah, the tech told me it’s kind of an “estimate”. Also, he said make sure you load your ink when the machine is on, otherwise it doesn’t recognize it as a full cartridge and your levels may be off.

the latest firmware update has cured that fault, the ink levels are now accurate when you read them from the printer (don’t bother with the levels on the rip…it’s useless)
