Modified ? why is it then if you contact paper supplier and say you already have an Oki……….they say there paper works fine….no mention that you need to modify it ?

martin, do you use LG Software ? if you do ! you should upgrade to 5600 ver. there are additional settings in the xml driver files that fix most issues.

The 5600 does not like printing black on films as much as the older printers – it;s due to the new toner used – look better once fixed to plate.

Martin, try printing on labels 2 setting and let the down the end tray – both slow the print process and colour print is better.

    Hi
simplest solution, remove adhesive protective film from plate – spray/mist with vinyl application fluid – apply film onto wet surface – squeegee out and then laminate via pressure roller. hey presto – no bubbles.

Martin cost of plates about £2.50. Time to make two about 5 minutes.
Retail £10.00 each minimum. Profit approximately £15.00 before overheads etc. I have my fabricator / layer upper(?) making the signs at £5.50 / hour. We did 25 sets today.

It is only possible using the right kit (Oki a must) right software ( LG a must) and right materials. ( Various suppliers).

Believe me. with the spin offs with graphics and other things, there is money in it.

    Cost of the equipment –
    Cost of materials

you can download price list from our site. – around £2.50 to make a plate…

Time required to make a plate – under 2 mins

Time required to deal with paperwork and admin

modified printers my ( oh i swore )

New 5600 is not modified at all…….. it;s the modifications in the software that enable a change to printer drivers and makes the most out the new colour profiles available from the printer. You can print thru word if you like ! but it won;t be the same result onto MODIFIED media 🙂

agree with everything else Carla says 🙂

Can’t display my www site as it’s advertising and i have been accused of doing this earlier ! but if you go to front page we do have a link.

You can buy your materials/printers wherever you want 🙂 like most things thou….how much support would an ebay seller give you ? or in fact oki – they just want a printer sale !! 🙂

I have no doubt that a living can be made from number plates providing you have the sustainable volume, I also doubt that a start up business is going to get to that point for a long time.
Is it worth it? well only you can decide but personally I would say number plates is an add on to a sign business, not the other way round.

Agree with Peter M – as above, but all information received to date is "off the cuff" and not supported by official sources. It is a question for the individual to choose how to proceed.

One point – there are hardly ANY LEGAL plates made in the United Kingdom anyway –

    Point – BSAU145d ( Legal Plate )

As to markings allowable – REG Number, border, Legal layout flag, Bs marking and name/location of supplying outlet – "No other markings are allowed" –

How is it then that main dealers have "logo;s" on plates (not allowed under above requirements ) and/or web sites/telephone numbers ! ( also not allowed under above requirements.

So my defence is that "no -one" makes a LEGAL PLATE

    —————————————–

Peter N – depends upon your level of expected income !

Average wage c £400 a week ! you can earn that from "show plates" quite easily – say 4 pairs odd a day. i would say this is a business ? as it;s better than driving a bus or digging holes 🙂 but then again Peter it does depend on your "day-job" ? – could pay then rent on a shop thou ?

    —————————————

As a start up business can anyone tell me where you can start a business for c. 1k investment and have a target market of c.23 million + customers
    ————————————–

I’m not into MLM – and I’ll tell you my secret to get famous/rich 🙂 i am in a very competitive market – why is that ? it’s because the volume is there…and the demand ! WHY try and re-invent the wheel… easiest way into business is find something that "works" and add your special something to make you different…better…….. in my opinion that normally = HARD WORK 🙂

    Sorry Paul,
So what you are telling me is that if you sell a plate without the BS number but replace it with show plate this is legal. 😕

Depends on your point of view ! i have been told by a DVLA officer that if i wanted to sell "show plates" that;s what i must do ? – But bet he wouldn’t;t stand up in court for me !

by removing or not printing BSAU145d you cannot be judged that you are "passing off" the plate as a genuine road legal article.

Never been tested in a court of law thou !?

Loads of lads want "show plates" for the reason that they "show their car" santa pod etc etc…… it;s a sign really- We ask them to sign a disclaimer – Show purposes only etc.

We don;t condone illegal plate making – cloning etc etc but making plates for the "lads" to style their motors is hardly crime of the century.

We always take documents – if trading within the Uk – but don;t need to from Jersey at all………

    Karl,

Show plates/number plates made and sent via Jersey is not Illegal !

In fact already been visited and cleared by Trading Standards 🙂

You can sell via a link to our site ?

Can;t advertise here, but link on front page takes you to our main site

    pm me for more info

Or if you make them yourself – add a border and instead of BSAU145d marking – add – "Show Plate" in 8 point font or smaller

Never make show plates with BSAU145d marking it;s against trade description act if they don;t conform to regulation layout format etc.

or move to Scotland………still not adopted the English Law….even with a prime minister that;s Scots ! lol

Martin..it;s true – dedicated software has been written to off-set some of the variance’s in this machine…if it wasn’t;t necessary ! then why would we have taken the trouble to do it 🙂

you will never run a succesful business selling just number plates.

Oh Peter ! you will…..we do and we advise many others "how to" as well 🙂

Ok you won;t do it from a "shop" to many overheads etc, but internet/ebay/markets/shows etc are all ways to earn a decent living. Maybe never a millionare !! but hey ho..if we were one of them we wouldn;t be here in the 1st place…lol

The only money to be made from number plates is in "show plates" and associated signs – picture plates etc. The volume market for standard plates – garages/mot centres etc – forget it – they can buy plates cheaper than you can make them generally !

With regards to software/printers – the oki has been fully tested with the new media’s available and is the only laser i would reccomend. The new 5600 someone said is not as good as the one’s previous…….!!! granted if you are not using dedicated software to "run it" settings are altered to maximise the print quality.

As an "add on" to normal sign business it can be profitable but sometimes a "pain" dealing with customers for £20 odd…… but it is a good door-opener sometimes. Also the Oki has capabilities to produce loads more than just number plates…….so as a "starter" system for someone looking to make a few £’s it’s an ideal investment. I would say that wouldn;t i ! but i believe it with all my heart.

The only time in over 3 years that i’ve known anyone not to have a "pay back" from there intial investment is probably twice…..and these guys thought that the world would be beating down there door once they bought a system…….forgot that as with all things……you have to sell and market yourself properly.

RIGHT PRODUCT AT THE RIGHT PRICE AT THE RIGHT TIME……oh and location location location ( whether this is internet/ebay/markets/shows/shop or knocking on doors ! )

If your not prepared to put in the effort, – buy nothing ! because as sure as eggs are eggs…..you’ll sell nothing.

We need to make them legal, but obviously as well “over-size” initially so clients can trim to fit.

Idea is a gradulated tint so as to allow the lower edge to be clear with upper edge full colour. E.g as with glass tint OEM but with a greater “block-out” at the top edge.

Need to be clear, rather than say white material as clients are not “boy racers” and require something that is functional rather than being an obvious sun visor!

    Many thanks for replies

    Guys,

There is a maze of www sites now offering plates via “builders” on the http://www…..some good..some bad…We have commissioned a completely new “plate-builder” at £££££’s loadsa money cost.

This will be avaialble for use by our customers within their own sites or as a link to ours within the next 6 weeks or so. If interested let me know and i will contact you when ready.

You could probably get a simple “builder” for say £1k – But it would be “simple” and with plates at the moment – content and style is king, so a plate-builder is only going to attract business/use….if it’s “wicked”… hope ours will be ! otherwise i’ll kill the designer.

    Well 2 reasons:

    1) Signs and stickers ~ We supply loads of car dealerships and this could be a handy “add-on”.

    2) Plates – We all know the issues with the requirement to print white behind colours ( due to yellow reflectives changing the colour ) and we make 100’s a day…Maybe gerber can solve this ?

Don;t get me wrong our current systems are great, but this i believe would give us more options ? – metallics etc

Found the best way is :

    Print graphic
trim off 10mm of protective film from back plate
lay back plate in jig or t square with exposed 10mm sticky at right hand end.
align graphic at left hand side making sure it’s square
stick graphic to exposed 10mm right hand side
Then trap “stuck” end into roller – 6mm letting graphic fall loose
roll thru roller whilst slowly removing remaining protective cover
    Job done.

There are approx 36,000 registered number plate suppliers ( forgive me if i’m out by a few 000, can;t keep up ).

So your chances of having a visit are slim unless you operate an “in your face” high street shop etc.

I assume that you are registered ?

My response – make him a cup of tea and show him all the details you have kept !!! for the legal plates you have supplied – show that you are a good guy.

Also show him “as we do” – copies of your disclaimers (showing customer name/address etc and payment methods ).

I think that it would be very unlikley for him to take any further interest in you.

The only confusion we had was that he quoted the act ref; Scrap yards / parts etc and once we “put him right” that we only needed to be registered with the DVLA we got an apology.

As a trade supplier we cannot afford to lose our licence, so to make double sure, all the requests for showplates we get are made and supplied via our sister company in Scotland 🙂

    Hands across the border……. :lol1:

    Sore point…(for me anyway!)

There is hardly any LEGAL plates made in the uk!!!!

If your local dealer has a logo on his plates – a www site address etc then his plates do not conform to BSAU145D and are therefore illegal to be supplied as a number plate 😀

The law states – name and location of supplier only – as the legend to be printed – no other marking allowed ( unless it is a border up to 6mm or legal flag emblem).

So guys you are not alone 😀

    Mort,

Your Mr Policeman was quoting another piece of legislation that went thru at the same time as the plate law. It requires anyone dealing in “parts” ie scrap yards to register ( most policemen are aware of this law and “think” that number plates falls within it ). We had a visit and was told that we needed to register with the council ! – as I was part of the orginial meetings with the DVLA/DOT when it all went thru – I was indeed a little ******* off that the law officer did not know “what law to apply”.
I was also ****** That if was visiting our customers and telling them the same ( ie they need to register twice !! ) then even more would stop selling plates. I phoned my local Trading standards people (waste of time), then the regional crime group ( the only one’s who knew anything about anything ) and they contacted local police. We even got an apology, and he is now a good customer 🙂
Not police fault..it’s down to rushing thru legislation…no -one thought who would enforce it ! they thought trading standards…but the act says it’s the responsibility of local councils……trading standards don;t work for them ! they work for county councils….ha ha… so it”s left to poor old policeman.
Normally they get a day or so a year to “check” these type of things, unless they get a formal complaint…..must easier to nick the motorist for illegal plates – helps the targets.
The law is too vague on showplates….even dvla officers cannot give a definitive answer although many local agents of the DVLA say yes you can sell them as long as you put the legend – “not for road use” on them.
The only prosecution/s i know so far…is guys who sold plates without being registered ( England/Wales only ).
The law did need tightening….but all they have done is drive the average legal “maker” out of the market and confuse the life out of punters and suppliers…..number plate sales dropped over 20% since law…..quite a loss to the governments vat coffers….serves them right.
I know of many local pubs where a visit to the toilets involves pushing past drug dealers….a fare more serious use of time would be to send the copper for a pint !
    Cheers

Beccy, we never used grey, just black ay halftone in corel…agree it;s a bit “bitty” but show plate guys have never complained. We have even printed a version of “carbon digits” using “fills” in corel.

Takes some playing around with designs and tones but results are generally ok for “plates”. When you are used to quality “sign” products then you can be a little too fussy about what these little “label printers” can produce ! For the normal average cost “retail” of a plate i have found the results very acceptable, by our customers.

I did source some colour ribbons once ? somewhere in surrey ! will try and dig out the info…but we tested them and never used them..no real benefit as each time we had to change the ribbon…..takes time ! and registration was an issue.

    1 question remains.

Do I still need to gather the correct info/documents, before selling a “Show/Custom” plate?????

This is all a matter of interpretation of the laws. You cannot make a “counterfeit” plate! But what is a counterfeit?

I have been advised by the DVLA that “show plates” are allowable but these are for use “off road” only. E.g. for car shows and main dealer forecourts etc. In general they are sold and used as “signs”. So therefore are not seen as being a “counterfeit”.

So if you make a “show plate” I would cover yourself by either advertising them as “For show use only” and/or getting your customer to sign a disclaimer – For show use only.

We print on reverse of the plate “For show use only” as an additional disclaimer.

None of the above has been tested in a court of law! So it is advice only.

I would imagine to get prosecuted they would have to prove:

You knowingly made a “show plate” for on road purposes.

We also keep records of everything we make….just in case! – credit card slips/ signed disclaimers etc etc.

    Hope this helps ?

Yes i’m afraid the dvla has made these illegal as they contain a honeycomb pattern. Only illegal if you supply one today !

If you still want to supply them let me know, we have a few in stock !! and can source more if required. Not cheap thou :lol1:

    Hi Guys,

A little more info for you.

    1) Bond – The adhesive used to bond is heat cured so it matures and bonds over time. Initially is it designed “low tack” so as if you have a problem in lamination it can be removed and re-fixed. This is the 2nd adhesive to be used..1st one was too strong and people moaned that they could not re-fix and therefore waste materials when they bodged it up.

    2) Printer. In basic terms it’s the same you see advertised everywhere. Oki have worked with us in “Tweeking” some settings to allow us to use the special media supplied for signs/plates etc. We have also their support that their service engineers and warranty will be valid for this application via our customers. It is NOT under normal terms. So if you buy one “off the shelf” without our serial number and use it with “funny materials” you may have a major problem when it seizes up.

3)The cost is the same from any UK distributor.

If you are making 1,000’s of plates for car dealers etc i reccomend Thermal. If you want to make serious money out of SHOW PLATES then i would recommend this print system. Bikes/cars/squares etc can all be achieved & 3D digits & Carbon &&&&&&&.

    4) XP – only required if you run LG software. It will run on any windows package with any design and print software ie corel.

    Hope this helps

Do you have to use a special media for vinyl labels etc, or could I print on a4 size std 5-7yr vinyl?

You need special approved media or you will damage the machine..I know as it’s cost us many machines during trials 🙂

As I already use corel draw/signlab would I need to purchase the package including the lg plate software? Likewise I already have a number plate roller, so could I just purchase a printer, the relavent plate blanks & materials, pay my £40 registration fee, then set up a template in corel that conforms to the legal spacing/letter size etc and produce plates?

To be honest software is great for plates and quick signs, so although you can use any design package it’s far quicker than even corel as all the templates are there for you to use.

My advice is don’t look too close at what the system costs ! in minute detail – look more at “what it can make you” and believe me it will be worth it.

If your seeing Mark ? tell him Hi from me

    Paul

ps, if you have a roller already ! no need for a new one. This will save a bob or Two…..

Marty – Colours..The Tech’ people at oki tell us that the colour should only start to fade after 3/4 years and a user life should be at least 6/7 for outside applications. With the method you are using , printing reverse onto poly then the uv resistance is greater as the poly acts as a laminate.

ha ha ha ha ha….yes this is a great one… only 1 supplier in whole country actually prints the bsau145 legend on the acrylic…and it ain;t us… ha ha…shows what a bloody nonsense it is…

anyway simon,i think you are ok anyway ! has the legilsation passed thru the irish parliment yet ? don;t think so…or indeed in scotland…it’s just us mad english..oh and the poor welsh..that have the full impact of the law…

You can use the edge exactly as you say and is does a reasonable job. I don;t know the cost for a oblong plate with the edge but our laser does the job for c. 5p black and 10p full colour. So not bad !!!

Think the point all the guys are trying to help with is that the edge is a very high quality machine/cost for just producing plates.

I agree with Rob – I would go for a cadet..seen it in action and boy what a toy..in my humble opinion beats the edge all hands up.

Edge can print silver etc so if that;s important go with it..

    Paul 🙂

    [quote="Darryl"]For Plates NO,NO,No!!!

    Darryl good point.

If you are making or wishing to make ! BSAU145D plates – ie legal one’s then you should source all your number plate components from a single supplier. The BSAU145D test involves weathering, impact etc etc and the certificates issued only apply to the test where all components were supplied by the same source. so if you buy reflective from A and acrylic from B , technically you are not covered by the BSAU. Moot point i know..cause who the hell is going to test it !! but you never know ??

    Paul

Becky….print onto clear ? The laser can print onto clear adhesive panels then back with white…depends on size of print and what you want it to do ? Manufacturer states that uv res is 3/4 years for 1st fade and 5/7 years before it looks iffy 🙂

Gerber 4 plates…like a mallet to crack an egg. Too expensive in my view for plates. But then again i am biased ! :). I won’t advertise because i value my membership more than a extra business. I’ll leave that to Rob (thanks mate).

Don’t muck about…we did years ago and had loads of little ladies at home “clicking” key fobs. For pennies for them..and pennies for us !! – The reasons someone wants a cheapo key ring is “They don;t want to spend anything” so your profits will be small. As Rodney states above.

If you want to supply them try these guys –
Diagraph on 0115 924 9111 – Ask for ali ba ba and tell him Paul at automarque sent you. That way you get a good deal and the cheaskate can buy me dinner next time.

EXAMPLE 250 plastic key fobs – 1 colour both sides = £60.00 So i wouldn’t ever again spend the evening “clicking”.

ps. They also do the Quality stuff, GOOD GUYS
