  • Oki printers from Magic Touch your views please

    Hi all,

Just about to order the Oki from Magic Touch has any one got one and please can I have your views on the print quality on different heat pressed products. I would go down the ink sub route again but got fed up of the R1800 clogging up.

And why is the Magic Oki more expensive than a standard Oki firmware upgrade ? has anyone got the standard Oki and how do you find that for sub work.

    Thanks

    Ian

I have the standard Oki 5600 and it has run perfect using tmt and other products for the last 18 months. Its doesnt get hammered but it is used regularly.Have used it for mousemats and mugs not quite as good as subli but not much difference (testing longevity as we speak). Print quality on tee transfers is good but fades quick. just using it at a printer beats any inkjet.

We use an Oki and laser paper from Target Transfers.

The main reason for this is that the Magic Oki printer has been adapted so that it can take their papers without it getting clogged up.

Target Transfer papers were tested by Oki themselves and given a clean bill of health in as much as Oki will still offer a guarantee on the printers from new.

Generally the guarantee is lost if you use a transfer papers because they are well known to cause problems.

I understand that it is because of this adaptation of the machine that they charge so much more – not quite sure what they actually ‘do’ during this though.

I’ve never used their papers and so can’t give an opinion, just thought you might be interested to know about Oki and Target Transfer.

    Saph 🙂

TMT seem to imply they have modified their printers for use with their papers.

    I’m a cynic!

    Hi all,
Its got something to do with the printer settings – they slow the print down, to get more toner/ink down, and i think the fuser unit is set to a lower heat. I learned the hard way by trying to print xpres papers without changing the print settings – wrecked the fuser unit and left me with a £650.00 paper weight. :lol1:

    Cheers John

Andrew, i haven’t used it on coasters or placemats yet.

Saph, Do target do papers for various uses or just tee’s?

    thanks all,

please keep the info coming as I can get an oki 5950 for the same price as the magic 5750 think that’s the numbers.

you still get the oki guarantee with tmt 5600’s, for sure.

never used subli, the oki print’s on t’s have that slightly plasticy feel, but are otherwise of good quality, no problems to date, other than some banding on the magenta drum for some reason.

Yes the printers are modified by TMT and that is why you can then still have the guarantee.

Unfortunately Target Transfers only do the papers for use on fabric rather than onto hard substrates which is a pain if you are wanting for that purpose.

I generally do dye sublimation onto coasters etc – going to see how the Gjet prints directly onto mouse-mats, not tried it yet but can’t see that it would be much of an issue.

I managed to have the cis tubing fall into my dye sub printer recently – I think some of the hard plastic holder has done some nice damage 😕 – had to buy another, so opted for the 7000 and bought in refillable carts.

I don’t think you can beat dye sub on hard substrates to be honest.

Modified ? why is it then if you contact paper supplier and say you already have an Oki……….they say there paper works fine….no mention that you need to modify it ?

Could be TMT paper requires the modification, perhaps other manufacturers of transfer paper have a product which is less fussy.

I bought a Oki 5600 from TMT to do t shirts and Mousemats etc. I don’t now use it for that purpose as running cost with the special Magic Touch paper is high and I didn’t like the results, too plasticky looking. Dye sub for mousemats and coasters gives a brilliant result with much cheaper paper. As far as a printer goes its fantastic, way ahead of my old Minolta which takes years to heat up. Also toners are very reasonably priced.
