I digested Roberts step by step and have tried all suggestions
and up to now i have only managed to do three in total ,two took a day each to remove because i couldnt move the glue yet one come off totally clean in less than an hour! WEIRD
As i never put the stuff on i dont know what material it is ‘scept that its a
    pig to remove

Ive used white spirit, meths ,thinners ,reducers ,tar remover and so far the only thing working is the white spirit but it takes forever

JAG Sign Supplies do the electric MBX
Its like a grinder with a rubberised wheel

I can’t say how well this works though as I don’t possess one

I wonder if the vinyl thats on the vehicle is cast, because the adhesive in some cast is described as ‘permanent’

Others have commented on using a wall paper stripper, the steam ones

Yup Terry steam wallpaper stripper I have found to be the best and for glue removal I use Rapid Remover from http://www.allprint.co.uk or even better get some other poor sod to do it 😀

As Steve has already said – a wallpaper stripper is the best way to do this, he first told me about this about 18 months ago and I have been a convert ever since – you can buy one from Argos for about twenty quid.

I believe the secret of getting the glue to come off with the vinyl (and not to stay behind on the vehicle) is to make sure the metal and the vinyl are a similar temperature. In cold weather, if the vinyl is heated (but the metal panel hasn’t warmed up as much) the glue tends to seperate from the vinyl and stays behind on the bodywork. With a wall paper stripper the panel gets nice and hot (as well as the vinyl) so the glue tends to seperate from the bodywork and comes away with the vinyl.

Thanks guys, just purchased a Argos steamer – £39 the kit. A bit basic chinese type quality, but just stripped an escort van in just over an hour.
With a little extra help from Mr T cut, it has come up a treat.
Maybe we will go into valeting !!! not…
Tip was worth the membership fee on it’s own.

    Hi Terry,
Try not to use evaporative stuff as it dries too quickly. Why not try using Cloudy Ammonia in a spray bottle. Watch out for the fumes though, but it should work a treat.
