I would follow down the clarity route as it would be ideal to have the support of others who use it on here but the route I go must be cloud based as I work from a number of machines.
I love print planr as well pretty awesome software but it’s a bit expensive for me too. There’s VSign Software too they sent me a demo it’s pretty robust too but at $250 a mth that’s out my budget. I decided to go with Sign Tracker it’s not the most polished of the bunch but I had a good chat with the owner and they’re working on a version 2 that will be loads better so I’m using that for now and I’m liking it so far

MemberJanuary 31, 2020 at 11:18 pm in reply to: Shop Management Software, what would you advise? So an update I’ve had a demo with Clarity and also had a quote. I like it but it’s like Cyrious it’s a bit dated and expensive for what you’re getting. Also, it’s basically server-dependent as mentioned above and not in the cloud I don’t like that and they don’t seem to be moving away from that anytime soon. If I had started years ago I would be stuck in but not gonna start now. I also realized that some simple things that you should be able to do yourself they don’t allow you to do you have to pay for that as well.
For you guys using Clarity give Oracle Netsuite a look. It’s miles better than anyone of the products I mentioned I simply love it just can’t afford it yet or should I say justify an expenditure like that per mth yet (well I may just bite the bullet).
But all the features and integration are awesome its worth every penny they charge and I only watched a video of it I’ve not gotten the demo yet that’s Monday coming. The reports you can pull the fact that you can customize for your liking.

Obviously with all printers you can used non oem inks but it can be risky. Some people have no problems but long term you could cost yourself more maintenance issues or even shorten the life of the head.
Im no expert, plenty of more knowledgable guys on here.
From the research i did when i got mine, i decided tp stay with Mutoh inks.
Im leaning that way as well but I’m in Jamaica and Oem Inks are more than twice the price and they cheaper out the industry. For example it’s £4.50 per sq foot to print a banner here and I think that too cheap to pay the price of OEM inks to make a profit

quote Kevin Mahoney:Up sell is the byword of the day. As we generally have little or no input from the client, I created folders containing previous work in batches corresponding to their budget. Once they see them, & the ones in a higher bracket, the budget then becomes a lot more flexible. God I’m sounding like a greasy salesman
Not a greasy sales man at all. Most business owners don’t really understand the value of marketing and the benefits on their business sometimes it’s our job to show them.

Could it be that you’re rolling it with the artwork facing in maybe you could try rolling it with the tape on the outside so it keeps a bit of tension on the tape it shouldn’t lift

Ive recently had a customer who placed and order for some flyers with me I designed and emailed them to him. He approved them and I sent them to the printing house. 7-9 business day turn around on economy pricing. Order placed on the Monday he calls me on wednesday to say that the flyers need to be edited I called the printer had them stop the order luckily they weren’t printed and made changes sent back the printer on Friday after approval of customer told customer their would be a fee to express the job for arrival on original date we expected. I paid said fee from pocket when customer comes to collect doesn’t want to pay extra funds. Giving the I could’ve gotten it cheaper elsewhere excuse I simply hold on to the prints till he coughs up my money. I will never work for that customer again without upfront payment in full no deposits

quote Martin Cole:My jaw hits the floor when I see some of the drivel I get from designers. Unquestionably the sign maker gets the bum end of the stick…. but I guess that’s up to us to change it..some good replies above
im stealing this @Martin Cole lol

quote Chris Wilson:We have another issue up here with graphic designers and customers supplying logos. There all low res. Some are stupidly small. Completely out shape. Then emails have to go back and forth, 10 emails later we finally have the file, but it’s in bits so I have to put it together anyway. I literally had someone just yesterday tell “aww we use Corel draw to, I’ll just send you the file”. What I got was a CDR File, which consisted of the graphic, in a really low res jpeg, about A5 size masterfully put on top of the lime t-shirts that’s it’s going onto.
So I just get on with it and try and do as much in house as possible as it actually saves me time, phone calls and hassle.
Downside is with that my design inspiration lacks.I have thankfully found 2 really good local designers in the last month that understand files and don’t produce something that’s almost good enough for a Facebook picture.
seems you’re dealing with some designers that just have a pc and some software lol
-
Those routoutcnc prices are damn good. I’ve got a brother in the U.K. may just have him take a look at one for me not getting those prices in the us
-
You see logo design is not just about getting the name of the company what they do and just sitting at the PC/MAC churning out ideas choose 3 and present to the client. It’s way more than that it involves market research so you identify demographic competition etc. it involves colour manipulation understanding which colours convey what emotion for example a lawyers office wouldn’t necessarily use red in their logo or yellow etc…
-
So here is my suggestion it’s how I work out my prices I have an hourly rate that is based on my overheads etc as well as my years of experience but I also provide a questionnaire that helps me to gauge how much this logo values to this client then I charge. So for example a simple brick and mortar business would get a significantly different charge than say a medium sized to large business
-
This makes great designers like myself cringe all the bad rep we’re getting but I fully understand anyone with a computer is a designer or sign maker but that doesn’t detract from the fact that sometimes you spend hours on a design are you being paid for that time when you charge 100quid no you’re not and $35 per hour isn’t your shop rate you should always use your shop rate when charging for designs or signs doesn’t matter.
But let me ask you guys this if someone came to you and asked you to design a logo and you charge him/her say $80 and when you look it turns out to be a Nike like company how would you feel. I would bet you would feel severely under compensated

Designing itself is a service and should be paid for simple. No two ways about it. It depends on the market you’re in however that will determine prices.
The dilemma you have with feeling bad for charging is a fallacy as we tend to feel that designing is just a little time spent and it isn’t a tangible product so no need to charge too much.
What I do is I always quote for designing on my invoice and I charge a premium. Sometimes it’s an hourly rate or a flat rate depending on what I’m designing.

It seems rather risky I personally wouldn’t do it with without a disclaimer but even then bad word of mouth is t good for us in the sign business
-
Well I personally prefer using a Wacom Tablet when doing illustrators especially logos making or even vectorizing them it’s much easier to use and the learning curve is just about a week or so
-
As a designer myself I find that going straight to the computer limits me creatively because as soon as you hit an idea you follow it only to find out it’s not gonna work then your frustrated and start all over again but when you’re on paper you just keep sketching idea after idea
-
It helps to sketch on paper when designing something rather than going straight to the computer there is something about a pencil and a blank canvas that gets the creative juices flowing. Also we tend to discount an idea before we put it on paper don’t sketch everything that comes to mind and then choose the best idea to expand on or maybe even merge two / three ideas together.

I’ve been a one man band for a couple years had a turn down lost most of my customers due to my dad being sick so I had to dial back abit. I aim to restructure and rebrand my business so 2017 is looking really promising for me and I will be needing tons of advice so will become a full member shortly as well.

Thank You Kevin will definitely try the equivalent of that here
