So guys I’ve been in the sign industry for 13 years initially did hand lettering and Cut Vinyl have a Graphtec CE6000-60. Now I’ve finally bought my own Wideformat Printers 2 Mutoh 1624s and a Vinyl Express Q160 cutter.

This is basically a new shop really new business name as I was apprenticed and became a partner in that business but had to pull up.

I’ve really limited experience with running a wideformat printer so any recommendations for me what to look out for etc?

I was thinking of running aftermarket inks because of the competitive nature of the business here in my little island. Do you guys recommend that in these Mutohs or no?

i run a Mutoh. Obviously with all printers you can used non oem inks but it can be risky.

Some people have no problems but long term you could cost yourself more maintenance issues or even shorten the life of the head.

Im no expert, plenty of more knowledgable guys on here.

From the research i did when i got mine, i decided tp stay with Mutoh inks.

Im leaning that way as well but I’m in Jamaica and Oem Inks are more than twice the price and they cheaper out the industry. For example it’s £4.50 per sq foot to print a banner here and I think that too cheap to pay the price of OEM inks to make a profit

    Hi Ruel

By starting out with "two printers", do you already have the customer base to feed these machines with work?

Switching to third party inks can have its advantages but can also have its downsides and those can vary considerably dependant on the quality of the ink you use.
You are in a warm country, so I imagine the colour UV stability of the ink may be something to watch for also. It is one thing being competitive in price, but if the colours fade on a banner in a month or so, your customer will not return.

best of luck starting out on your own mate.
