Rob,
your forgetting, the visible area of the curtain is smaller than what is needed to produce it, you need a good 6-8 inches at the bottom of the print to make a proper pocketed hem where it runs against the rave bar of the truck and at least 15" each end for wrapping around the poles plus when your printing that size it’s wise to print a colour bar to ensure all heads are firing – that takes up a bit of print area as well. -
We thought about the big grenadier but at 2.6m it’s not quite big enough as we see a market in truck curtains and the average height of them is 2.6-2.8m so it would be cutting it too close.
We opted for a e-jet x16, so far (only had it 3 weeks) its done 19 pairs of truck curtains and a 140 sq mtr bus wrap with no major issues. -
Hiya Rob,
We have now got a 3.2m full solvent printer, cutting our print time on a double decker wrap from 17.5 hrs to about 4.5, seemed the way to go.
All the curtain welding, buckles etc. we put out to a specialist truck curtain manufacturer.
Hi Nick, we are about 80% up & running, give me a ring when we’re back on Thursday – Have a good Christmas

We used coated truck curtain, 900 I think, printed with full solvent and liquid laminated.

The van looks nice …but have you ever tried stripping a vehicle that has been wrapped in 9800 ? I would suggest you start experimenting with various brands and concoctions of glue remover as soon as possible. We wrapped a range rover in the same black 9800 that stayed on for about 12 months, vinyl removed in 1/2 a day….. 2 1/2 days for the glue!
-
The thing to remember with wrapping is that it has to be a combination of the right vinyl and the right vehicle ie: kpmf on a beetle fine, on a sprinter no no!, also if your wrapping a beetle/taxi with avery mpi 1005 your really getting into overkill – especially with the price.
A good wrapper will be able to wrap any vehicle with any film – but that doesnt guarantee it will still be down in the recesses after a week or so.

MemberNovember 29, 2006 at 9:15 am in reply to: what vinyl can i use on a wide load escort vehicle?Hi,
The layout on the citroen relay is the one the authorities reccomend, the angle of the chevrons should be 60 degrees and the yellow panel on the side of the vehicle should be 300mm wide. The yellow band should be 200mm high and of "diamond Grade" quality extending to the very front of the vehicle. -
We’ve just donated some vehicle graphics (or rather the fee we would have recieved) for a big 4×4 for BBC hereford & worcester to go around in advertising children in need.
-
We have the same piece of kit – under a different name & for a different price, and it is very good for short runs. Dont know about there laminate never tried it.

Nice work Ben, did you do the artwork or was it supplied ?
We’ve done a couple of stretched hummers this year and these long buggers are not as easy as they might first appear.
-
As I have said on previous posts, common sense tells me liquid lam is better than film, if you have trouble getting one layer of vinyl to stay in a recess your chances with 2 are less.
As for which film that depends on the vehicle, shape, recesses etc. the most successful wrapping film (everyone has some sort of failure rate) has got to be, if printed, Avery MPI 1005 (Film Lam Dol 1003) if just a colour change the best reccomendation would be Avery 900 series.
Either of those films may be over spec’d for the particular vehicle you need to do. -
Hi Jim,
I’m only at Evesham.
-
yes I’d echo Johns comments – fine where no power available, invaluable when we used to do all the rac graphic repairs in lay-bys, service stations etc. but not for everyday use.
-
Yes there used to be cordless heat guns, they ran on gas and were made by taymar if my memory serves me right. They stopped making them a few years back and now are like rocking horse sh!t to obtain. I found two in an old ironmongers on my travels – sold one to a colleague and found that when a sprinter ran over mine it didn’t want to work aany more.
I doubt if they would comply with modern h&s though. -

MemberSeptember 28, 2006 at 11:35 pm in reply to: should I laminate vehicle graphics when using a cadet? We, when laminating always use the matched reccomended laminate, especially on a wrap, it’s no good having the most conformable media printed and then laminate it with something with no lasting conformability – it has to pull out of recesses then it has no choice.
As for colour differences we find most, although not all, film laminates do NOT enhance the prints if anything they tend to marginally dull some of the vibrancy.
We actually prefer to liquid laminate which like a varnish does enhance the vibrancy, also seems to allow more conformability plus as wrap vinyls are not as faultless as the sales talk would have you believe, if one layer of vinyl is having trouble staying in a recess how, reallistically, can you expect two layers to perform better ?
We have only gone to film laminating recently because of the quantities we are now producing, no drying time less carefull handling etc. Quality "specials" we will always liquid laminate. -

MemberSeptember 28, 2006 at 11:12 pm in reply to: should I laminate vehicle graphics when using a cadet?Just asking because although we laminate all of our "long term" customers vehicle prints, we rarely do on buses or taxis.
Taxis usually only have a twelve month exposure anyway – combined with the way they are driven (60% panels replaced in 12 months due to accident damage) It doesnt make much odds, but we went back to re-wrap a bus the other week (change of promotion, not failing graphics) that had been done 18 months ago and apart from a few "DRIVER ERROR" scratches it still looked as vibrant as when we applied it.
My question is with technical progress in inks are we just all going over the top ?

At that point when the supplier has exhausted all his knowledge trying to rectify your problem, offers you a solution that is totally unacceptable and when you reject the solution you are told "all further communication must be through our solicitors". Would it not be a good idea to be able to make public that the attitude of the supplier is:
WHEN WE CANT COST EFFECTIVELY RESOLVE SOMETHING WE ARE GOING TO DO ALL WE CAN TO SHIFT BLAME / GET OUT AND LEAVE YOU HIGH & DRY, and if all else fails we will drag out the legals in the hope you go away or go bust before it comes back to bite us! -

The new logo just proves to me what a bunch of fools they all are. I wouldn’t trust any politician from any party ever. What drives anyone to go into politics in the first place? A huge ego as far as I can see.
I was hoping the conservatives would manage to rid this country of the dreaded labour party that has blighted our lives all these years and has imposed so much legislation upon us you would think we were living in 1950’s Russia.
However, sadly the conservatives are not a viable alternative. David Cameron is a Joke, so much so that I am even feeling nostalgic affection for William Hague
That leaves the backstabbing Liberals with their machiavelan leader Menzies or “Mingis” (or whatever the back stabbing basterd is called)
Not got any strong opinions then Phill ?

You seem to remember that £4/11/6 well enough, did you have alot of week left at the end of your money then peter,
Incidently, i assume you were still living with your parents then, what proportion did you have to hand over as "housekeeping" just curious as theres a bit of a heated debate at home, four teenage kids and you can guess the rest.

Started late as an aprentice didn’t you Peter – did you do 25yrs. in the forces for national service or something ?

Wholeheartedly agree with John, no business can afford to carry staff to handle every possible enquiry when times are busy, so it is inevitable that somebody is going to be dissapointed at those times. It’s a sad fact ,maybe, but I know our own priorities are as follows:
The biggest spenders
The promptest payers
Trade sales
The man off the street.Ce la vie 🙄

No I’m from Evesham, Worcs.
In the late nineties I helped start a signwriting department at a curtain manufacturers in abingdon – eventually got well & truly stitched up but thats another story – and we were doing about 100 pairs of curtains a year, from andrew wisharts in scotland down to new milton sand on the south coast.
-
I could name one or two hauliers that still want you to do 14 hrs with a brush for £75, including second coating all the lettering, pin striping and coming back to them every 4 months or so to touch up any damage they may have caused for whole life of the truck !

John is on the ball again. Wissen did sell a stand alone package and it was also incorporated into their X1 signmaking (DOS) package.
Good god I thought I was the only one who used X1 that brings back memories, and as for the photocut part I think I used it twice – the one time a lorry driver brought in, shall we say a lads mag, and wanted a picture for the back of his cab. Well we cut it and to my surprise there was far too much detail enhanced so we just put it up at the back of the workshop.
-
Was that outside your house Sunday by any chance ?
-
In general they dont like any lettering on the boot lid, or contravision on any windows.
this is because if anything untoward, rape mugging etc was going on in the back it would remain visible through the windows and any observers would be able to take the reg no. or hackney carriage no. easier without any lettering/phone numbers to confuse them.

To look correct the livery surely HAS to appear parallel to the roof. -

MemberSeptember 1, 2006 at 7:27 am in reply to: 40FT CurtainTrailer. ADVICE NEEDED PLEASE!Right : poser for you… if you measure from the bottom as suggested, what do you do if the floor slopes ie: the 5th wheel end is higher than the rear, if you do not have the luxury of manufacturers drawings and the road the trailer is on may not be level.
-
Phil Halling
MemberSeptember 1, 2006 at 6:32 am in reply to: 40FT CurtainTrailer. ADVICE NEEDED PLEASE!As john says measure from the top, but measure from the metal part of the roof as opposed to the plastic pelmet as that can vary slightly.
Also if it’s a 13.6m trailer, if at all possible, snap a chalk line from front to back about 75mm down the curtain and measure from that as most trailers actually bow a little in the middle when the curtains are strapped down taught.

-
That one was designed so that the extreme ends of the mountains (Mont Blanc actually) were approx the same level, started middle of rear and joined at the front grill, where the vehicle obstructions such as grill, headlights etc. make it more forgivving for adjustment.
The hardest part was to get the blue vignette to work properly down the sloping air deflector. -

MemberAugust 10, 2006 at 3:24 pm in reply to: need help applying wrapping vinyl please?Sorry to blow that theory peter but the same effect has also happened when using a liquid laminate, effectively a thin varnish so we are talking just over 2 layers.
-
Phil Halling
MemberAugust 9, 2006 at 6:57 am in reply to: need help applying wrapping vinyl please?Peter, do you not find you have to use an excessive amount of heat to get the "double layer" area into the recess compared to the single layer around it, in other words you are in a possible danger of blowing a hole in the single layer when bringing the overlap up to enough temperature to conform.
If vinyl tapered at the edges in such a way that the 10mm of the overlap was the same thickness as the single layer then I think there would be more of a chance of ongoing sucess. -
You can always laminate with a matt laminate
-
Phil Halling
MemberAugust 8, 2006 at 6:41 pm in reply to: need help applying wrapping vinyl please? As an afterthought, it seems to happen a lot more frequently on printed vinyls than coloured vinyl – maybe the inks contribute in some way to lessen the adhesive qualities.
-
Phil Halling
MemberAugust 8, 2006 at 6:38 pm in reply to: need help applying wrapping vinyl please? As we have had this happen before on various materials I’ve given this subject a lot of thought, and my own theory is this:
When you’ve blown in panel 1 thoroughly it will then have lost its memory and should theoretically stay there forever ( assuming the panel was cleaned properly prior to application) The problems come when you start applying the second and subsequent panels. It appears that when you heat in the second panel the heat transfered around the area your heating actually lessens the adhesion on the first panel, I expect your finding that the lifting is restricted to an inch or so of the overlap, so in a nutshell it would seem that panel 2 is actually pulling panel 1 away from the vehicle.
This is just my own personal theory and I doubt if any manufacturer would ever admit to this being possible as the effect it could have on vehicle wrapping would be enormous if it was ever admitted that there is no such material out there that you could guarantee this wouldn’t happen with.
It would be interesting, time & customers allowing , to apply just one panel per side per day and see if the time lapse between panels would lessen / eliminate this problem.
-
Phil Halling
MemberAugust 8, 2006 at 6:04 pm in reply to: need help applying wrapping vinyl please?I assume you thoroughly "cooked" the first panel into the recess(es) before you applied the second panel, and so on?
