Lettering on Taxis
Hi All,
Is there any law about the size or anything that goes on taxis?
I had a couple of blokes come in wanting 2 pairs of magnetics signs made, and thay asked me do I know the laws on size of lettering for taxis?
Is there such a law regarding taxi graphics?

Hi, Some councils stipulate font and size but I think this is only for the magnetic top sign.

Most councils have their own rules regarding decals on taxis so you would need to check in your own area.
No. Forget that. Don’t waste your time. Let your customers find out for themselves, and then instruct you accordingly.

In general they dont like any lettering on the boot lid, or contravision on any windows.
this is because if anything untoward, rape mugging etc was going on in the back it would remain visible through the windows and any observers would be able to take the reg no. or hackney carriage no. easier without any lettering/phone numbers to confuse them.

As said. Each council have their own set of guidlines. Generally they like to see artwork for anything that is going on the vehicle. I worked for a taxi advertising company in London and dealing with the Public Carriage Office and provincial councils was a nightmare!
If it’s simple text there shouldn’t be too much problem as long as it all stays on the panels.

Well, as taxi operator (I also have a sign business) I cant claim that I know everything (whats your problem with taxi drivers Derek?) but I can verify that each individual council has different rules. The rules of which are in the conditions of license – so get your guys to read thier own paper work or phone thier council. All they have to do is look at other taxis in the area to get a rough Idea of whats allowed or not!

From memory, outside of London councils have a Taxi Inspector.
What the taxi inspector says, goes.Best you identify the taxi inspector and get chatty, they’ll put you right.

No, I think youll find that taxi inspectors enforce not re-inforce.
A taxi Inspector can stop you plying for hire for infringing a any number of rules.Well thats the case down here anyway 😀

Enforce? re-enforce? The councils make the rules – Taxi inspectors are actually with the trading standards and make sure the councils rules are followed!

Get in touch with your local licencing authority at the council and they will point you in the right direction. Explain to them that he is asking for magnetics as our council will not allow this as anyone could remove them and put them on their own car. Think safety! How many times have you heard of some woman getting in a taxi and being attacked later on!

Thats very interesting I would have thought that was the same throughout the UK. Here (north Scotland) councils issue the license and set the tariffs do all the paperwok and trading standards send out inspectors to make sure everyone is abiding by the rules!
The council used to enforce the rules too this changed about 3 or 4 years ago.
Interesting though.
