MemberMarch 31, 2006 at 2:00 pm in reply to: do you ever sub contract to a sign fitter ?Hi Hugh
We did a van for a client last year and I noticed the van had a ladder on the back and a purpose built walkway on the roof.
When the client came back to pick up his vehicle I asked him if he would be interested in helping me out from time to time fitting shop signs and the like on an hourly rate and he said ok.
Cool, so now I just factor in his hourly into any quote that needs his help and off we go.
It has worked out really well, He fitts PVC windows and does general property maintenence and has an envyable range of tools and ladders and stuff.
So look out for a friendly local guy with a walkway on the roof of his van and see if he is interested in some extra work.

Or if most of your customers bring their vehicle with them when they first meet you then you could just photograph the vehicle.
I f you stick a magnetic strip of a known size (say 500mmx100mm) to the vehicle before you take the photos it is then easy to scale the picture once on the screen. For the back of the vehicle we use the numer plate size.
We find the clients like to see what the graphics are going to look like on their own vehicle
And it’s free

Hi Hugh
This wont be of any help to you today but this is a nice trick for the future.
I would like to say that I invented this but I can’t because Mareck told me about it.
What we have done is cut a piece of magnetic material and cover it in contrasting checks.
Ours is 500mm x 100mm with 50mm checks in red and white.Next time you go to photograph a vehicle, just stick the mag to the side of the car and take your picture.
When you get back to the office it is simple to scale the photo because you know the size of the magneticDon’t worry about the back as most numberplates are 520mm long

I asked the client for the name of the font and he gave me complelely the wrong name (lapidery) then I asked him again and he said it was Din.
When I told him the font was for sale for $199 he said use Arial 😕
It is only to go on one T-Shirt.

Yeah I Know what you mean peter
The client wants it on the apron but I may try to talk her into having a simpler version of it.
I Steve, Thanks, I have only seen a photo of it on the clients phone but I think they have fitted it too high.
I sugested they fit it just above the windows but they seem to have gone a good 18″ above that.
Have they put the swing sign up yet?
The freestanding butcher above is to go on the other side of the river I think, to try and tempt the tourists over in the summer.

I don’t know an awlful lot about illustrator so I can’t really help you on that.
If you select your object/text etc and go to ‘object’ then ‘path’ then offset path that should bring up a dialogue box and the rest should be self explanatory

What you need is something like this but bigger and with a sucker on one end instead of a point.
or you could stick the point into a offcut of mag material taped to the cemtre of th circle

No probs Brian
I think the important thing is to mention early on that there may be a charge for original artwork creation and also vectorizing supplied artwork if it is going to take time to do.
We found that if you leave it until they ask to use the artwork for other purpose to ask for artwork fees they tend to act like you’re trying to rip them off wuth hidden charges
paul r
-
Hi brian
This is a problem we have too but only if I forget to mention early on in the initial meeting that there could be charges for artwork if they want to use the images on other media.
Then we charge for the design but give them a CD with the logo in several formats with a readme file stating that I created the logo but have passed copyright ownership over to the client.
I also put my contact details in the readme file so printers etc can contact me direct if they need a certain format.
Print a nice cover for the cd
They will be over the moon

You could keep an eye on ebay but they all seam to go for silly money
