    Hi Hugh

We did a van for a client last year and I noticed the van had a ladder on the back and a purpose built walkway on the roof.

When the client came back to pick up his vehicle I asked him if he would be interested in helping me out from time to time fitting shop signs and the like on an hourly rate and he said ok.

Cool, so now I just factor in his hourly into any quote that needs his help and off we go.

It has worked out really well, He fitts PVC windows and does general property maintenence and has an envyable range of tools and ladders and stuff.

So look out for a friendly local guy with a walkway on the roof of his van and see if he is interested in some extra work.

Or if most of your customers bring their vehicle with them when they first meet you then you could just photograph the vehicle.

I f you stick a magnetic strip of a known size (say 500mmx100mm) to the vehicle before you take the photos it is then easy to scale the picture once on the screen. For the back of the vehicle we use the numer plate size.

We find the clients like to see what the graphics are going to look like on their own vehicle

    And it’s free

Just been on the phone to Devon & Cornwall Police about this and they said,

“There is no restriction whatsoever concerning reflective materials fitted to vehicles unless they restrict your veiw from the vehicle”.

    Very weird indeed

They did say that the call was being recorded but I think they might well loose that tape if I was ever taken to court for illegal vehicle markings

    Hi Hugh

This wont be of any help to you today but this is a nice trick for the future.

I would like to say that I invented this but I can’t because Mareck told me about it.

What we have done is cut a piece of magnetic material and cover it in contrasting checks.
Ours is 500mm x 100mm with 50mm checks in red and white.

Next time you go to photograph a vehicle, just stick the mag to the side of the car and take your picture.
When you get back to the office it is simple to scale the photo because you know the size of the magnetic

Don’t worry about the back as most numberplates are 520mm long

I Steve, Thanks, I have only seen a photo of it on the clients phone but I think they have fitted it too high.

I sugested they fit it just above the windows but they seem to have gone a good 18″ above that.

Have they put the swing sign up yet?

The freestanding butcher above is to go on the other side of the river I think, to try and tempt the tourists over in the summer.

    Hi Russ

I have been looking into buget sign software and a quick search on tinternet brought up this.

I don’t know what it is like but I’m sure a few on here would have tried it

I need to marry a talented lady that can do my drawings for me, but first I need to learn to vectorize like you Paul.
    -Marek

And I need to learn to concentrate on text layout (I am sorting out the kerning jill)

Thanks for all of your comments guys and gals, it’s a fantastic way to learn the art of design, layout and signmaking in general.

I will post the revised logo once it is finished so you can see if I got it right.

    Hi again

Because of a few Corel/Graphtec cutting probs I’ve recently had I am now doing my best to learn AI as I’m told this may be better for cutting

    Hi Russ

I don’t know an awlful lot about illustrator so I can’t really help you on that.

If you select your object/text etc and go to ‘object’ then ‘path’ then offset path that should bring up a dialogue box and the rest should be self explanatory

What are you using as an interface between corel and you plotter

Have you spoken to your plotter supplier

I agree with Marek about the fonts Jill, you have a real talent when it comes to font selecton and layout.

Could you post the names of the fonts and where we can buy them, I need to invest in some new fonts.

If it has a sticy backing this also help fantasticly when weeding as the stickyness keeps small objects in place

Nice idea Kate, and so Danny doesn’t feel left out you could put Kate and Danny across the sunstrip

I wonder if those name sunstrips will ever make a come back

What you need is something like this but bigger and with a sucker on one end instead of a point.

or you could stick the point into a offcut of mag material taped to the cemtre of th circle

    No probs Brian

I think the important thing is to mention early on that there may be a charge for original artwork creation and also vectorizing supplied artwork if it is going to take time to do.

We found that if you leave it until they ask to use the artwork for other purpose to ask for artwork fees they tend to act like you’re trying to rip them off wuth hidden charges

    Hi brian

This is a problem we have too but only if I forget to mention early on in the initial meeting that there could be charges for artwork if they want to use the images on other media.

Then we charge for the design but give them a CD with the logo in several formats with a readme file stating that I created the logo but have passed copyright ownership over to the client.

I also put my contact details in the readme file so printers etc can contact me direct if they need a certain format.

Print a nice cover for the cd

They will be over the moon

    Hi Dan

I don’t know why but second hand heat presses are really difficult to find at a reasonable price.

You could keep an eye on ebay but they all seam to go for silly money

We ended up going to R A Smart and getting a new one for under £500

search for ra smart on google

    Hi Marko

Are they set on useing the yellow and black?

I think a light blue would look more electrical but this is just a personal preference.

    Also you have two + signs, I would put a + and a –

    What do you think
