Well if that’s the case, admittedly – we’ve done numerous jobs where the font has been supplied. I know for the sake of a few quid it’s worth securing the rights but if the job is for the people that own the font, isn’t it still covered?
We’ve purchased the font anyway but would be good to know what others have done in these situations, thanks.

Next time you get this problem in Illustrator, outline the stroke:
Object>Path>Outline Stroke.
It’s a bit like creating outlines on text, it should iron this problem out 🙂 -
We’re still enjoying experimenting with ours, a few teething problems but I think the extra features over the VP-540 will prove it’s worth in the days to come. Our biggest request would be that Roland start stocking white and metallic in 440cc form!

Dymo Discpainter. Haven’t used it myself but looks very simple and quick to use. Will be ordering one soon so will let you know the results 🙂

We’ve done a fair amount of these. I can’t describe the process we use as I’m terrible at explaining things but the basic idea is to stagger a line of dots in between what you already have.
For example, you start off with a 10mm dot and repeat it across over 2000mm where it gradually diminishes down to say 2mm so you have a single line of dots gradually getting smaller. Now repeat this line next to itself with say…no gap. Shuffle the entire new line across so the it’s a little infront of the other and simply repeat the 2 lines. I know I’m terrible at explaining this!
I hope this attachment makes sense! 🙂

We basically do the same. The most common apps we use is Omega and Illustrator. Haven’t got to grips with Corel yet so that is mainly used for converting files if we have problems with either of the other two.
Omega 2.1 can take Illustrator files up to version 8 and we’ve been able to import up to cs2 in Omega 2.61. Corel 4 can save as Illustrator version 1 to CS3 so shouldn’t have any problems there. Only problem we’ve had in the past is:
The file gets imported in to Omega as a blank which can normally be resolved by saving as an earlier version or re-saving the object as a fill rather than a stroke. The cut lines get imported in to Omega as print lines which we resolve by selecting changing to cut lines (black).
Never had a problem saving from Omega to Illustrator or other software.
Hope this helps. -

Adding the cyan didn’t cure the problem as it still isn’t 100% black which we were trying to achieve. However, it did produce a black we were able to use for the job. So many thanks for the advice.
Meanwhile, back to the drawing board! -

Would it not be easier for you to buy in some white on a 1220mm roll? you could do it in one go then. -

MemberMay 5, 2009 at 10:31 am in reply to: Why are my Illustrator gradients changing to rainbow?!!John, I should have made a new swatch for the colour as I wouldn’t have the problem now but didn’t foresee this happening. It’s strange because I can open the EPS in other software ok, the thumbnail is correct, it prints fine but just won’t appear correct when I open in Illustrator where it was created.

I done a quick search on the boards but didn’t come up with any previous posts regarding this, I probably wasn’t specific enough.
The quantity was first 200no and then went straight up to 1000no. I’ve never known these types of scams where they make contact other than email. I’m told the guy seemed a nice chap on the phone too.

MemberMarch 13, 2009 at 3:11 pm in reply to: can someone help with a gerber cutter software problem?Dave, we use roughly the same process as you. Design work in AI then cut from composer but we have a different cutter. Have you tried importing as a AI version 8 file?
…And, we have had problems in the past where we’ve saved using more than one layer. Solution we used to get round this was to have all work on the AI file to be placed on a single layer.

MemberFebruary 11, 2009 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Roland Giving Free upgrade to firmware adding RIPC to VP540Been using the new firmware for the last week now and the difference is night and day. Although we’re yet to have updated profiles for the right media, the RIPC default ones have been fine.
The printing doesn’t ‘look’ like it’s travelling faster but the print times have been greatly reduced, this is really noticeable on longer runs.
The quality increase is negligible. We haven’t noticed any major improvements BUT the way it now puts the ink down really shrinks any banding problems. We used to have banding problems printing colours such as burgundy on to clear but have had no problems since the update.
Definitely worth the update if you have a compatible printer.

I didn’t realise I was running 1.00! Well from the results, we didn’t notice any difference in quality but must say the print time has improved.
I can’t find any reference to the update changes. Would be nice to have a list to compare from.

Thank you very very much for your replies. It’s such a boost receiving good advice from professionals. We would love to stick with Roland but the fact the widest white printer we could find is 54" makes things doubtful. The JV33 still remains the front runner which is not a bad thing as we’ve heard good things about this printer.
I know white may not be the biggest issue in most cases but we do need this option in the upgrade. Again, many thanks for great advice.
-
Thanks, JV33 looks like a runner. Could anyone let me know how they’ve got on with one of these? Would be interesting to know people’s opinions, thanks! 🙂

Robert,
Kudos to your brother. I know dozens of artist’s that haven’t even had a sniff of public acknowledgment, even through art college. It’s great that he’s done as well as he has from such a background. Very inspirational work indeed, and I don’t just mean this piece.
Now if only that video had some Benny Hill music playing in the background…. 🙂

I’ve always been a bit careful with these kind of sites. A friend of mine tried one a while back and started getting so much spam he had to change his mobile number.
Now if I can just remember the number of that girl I don’t like…
-
Joe,
I’d love it if you could let me know the package deal you were offered. Maybe a pm or possibly Rob could forward it on to me. Would be much appreciated.
I still think it will probably be the Versacamm. A lot of people have positive views on it and we’d have 2 cutters and a printer for the space of 2 machines.
I’m still in doubt about the lack of numbers using the mutoh. I’m sure it’s a great machine but I’d hate to move into this area of the industry with a troublesome start.
The way I see it at the moment is:
Mutoh VJ
Pro’s: Newer technology, newer parts, good history with the supplier.
Con’s: Print and cut on separate machines, more unit space, still pretty unknown.Versacamm
Pro’s: Positive feedback from users, Print & cut in 1, less unit space than mutoh
Con’s: Maybe technology is 2nd best to mutoh’s? -
The support here has been super! It’s great getting advice from members as it gives us a lot more to consider before jumping in.
Even though we will be attending Sign UK, we’d of probably made up our minds on which printer to go for by then. We were initially going to wait until the event so we could have a broader view on what’s available but we’ve been putting off getting the machine for too long already.
More than likely we will be going eco-sol due to the lack of ventilation in our workspace. I recon it would be too difficult to install a decent system in around our offices as well.
It’s a pity no-one has a mutoh, it would be great to get some input from them about the machine…..does anyone on the boards even have one?!
-
Thanks for the feedback.
Neil, we’ve been offered a similar deal for the valuejet. I like the fact it’s eliminated banding with it’s interweaving method but I just haven’t heard much history about the machine from anyone.Going for the versacamm; we’d have 2 machines in our unit, a cutter and a printer & cutter in 1.
Opting for the valuejet; we’d have 4 machines? 2x cutters, a printer and a laminator.
I don’t know what would serve the better advantage! The samples we have from both machines look very nice. I’m very marginally in favor of the versacamm at the moment soley because it has more feedback from people but then again the valuejet does have it’s advantages…..dam I’m confused.
I think it will go to a coin toss! -
Hi,
Sorry about the lack of information, I tried being as brief as I could.
The work in general will initially be for window graphics and then eventually expanding into other area’s of print. Our current workspace that is used for cutting graphics hasn’t got too much ventilation so I suppose solvents could be an issue. In terms of print & cut in 1 or standalone printer and cutter; it shouldn’t be a problem with space, we’re mainly looking to get something that will do it’s job well.
I’m not sure which prints at the better quality, eco or full solvent but the majority of our work is not exposed to the elements. So the better quality process would be in our favor.
Thanks,
Jon

I’ve done a few ads in the yellow pages back when I was at Uni. I found having bullets with your key skills makes an ad a lot easier to read rather than reading the whole paragraph to establish your credentials.
It looks good though. Maybe you could make the circles behind the phone number touch so that you’ll have a consistent colour which makes it a little easier to read.

I really like it. What software do you use?

Hi,
I’m from Portsmouth (Great football result lastnight!). I’ll try and get a picture up as soon as I figure out how to…..need to take one as well, mind.
