Just thought i would show you this video of one of my brother Jim’s vinyl floor designs being installed. i think there is a total of four fitters on this one.

the process of laying these floors is to start in a corner laying a single cut coloured line tight to the wall. you travel right around the room until you get back to the beginning. then, you change colour and thickness of line and away you go again right round the room. you do this continually until you reach the centre of the room.

the thickest line is 2 inch and the thinnest is .25 inch wide.

i can tell you now this is a serious knee and back breaker. myself and andrew have installed one on our own and its soul destroying to say the least.

i think this one was installed in dallas, not 100% though.

scroll down and click the player button to start watching. 😀

amazing… I’m knackered just watching it done…. may have to sit down and relax for a while :lol1:

I have a mate of mine who is epileptic. He’d go in to fit just walking into the room, as multi colour stripes are one of his triggers…

    Thanks for that tho

Very Good, how do you put a price on that 😕

What vinyl is used due to the wear and tear it’s getting?

andrew and graham cut the lines on both our cutters, takes anything from a full day or up to a week depending on the floor area covered. (thats squeezing in our own work in between too though) we have done around 50 floors now… they are priced with a markup on the vinyl and then a labour charge on cutting into the required widths of strips.
the galleries will sell one of these floor designs for £100,000 plus… bizarre i know…
the vinyl used is oracal 751 cast…

this is another one done in the TATE Modern gallery London

I think I’ll do that in my lounge instead of a carpet next time 😉

Robert, What are socks? Is it something special you need to do this sort of work?

Firstly the Tate gallery floor is superb! to think I have trouble putting a straight line on a van.

Secondly, with using just 751, what is the durability like? All those people walking on it, surely shoes, heels etc would scuff it.

Also good old health and safety with no anti slip laminate wet shoes etc, then again I guess it’s like a marble floor.

    Just curious 😕

    Top stuff though!

£100k for a floor, whats the world coming to 😀

same questions i have asked countless times till i gave up and just got on with it. :lol1:
the durability works extremely well for some reason, puzzled me too that one.
when a floor is installed, 9/10 times it is completely removed after a maximum of 4 days. however, the collectors/customers of the gallery have theirs permanent. the customer then has one installed in a private sort of place, sometimes in their own home or private gallery. i believe the editor of vogue magazine has her front hallway leading up a winding staircase at home done. obviously in places like this traffic is not heavy by any means.
that said, the Edinburgh modern gallery has had one installed 3 years ago and has to be down for 20 years! 😕 when they got it done they actually bought twice the material needed in case any areas began to lift.

regarding slipping etc again it was a concern of mine but each and every install of any sort at these galleries gets a H&S check before the doors are open to the public. i did speak to someone at one of the shows and they said that due to the multiple lines being laid next to each other the texture of the butting of the joins and overlaps actually creates a better grip on the floor to the likes of laminate or marble flooring.

one floor i did see that took a pounding was a foil + vinyl floor. the areas with normal vinyl was perfect but the chrome, gold and brass foil areas had damage due to high heels. again these were replaced any time damage occurred… but still with the price tag ide expect better!

Thanks for clearing that up Rob,
Surprises me how durable it is. And stripping it off after just 4 days 😮 .

Tell your brother to get some descent clients, you wont get known doing work for the likes of the editor of Vougue 😀 😀

we have one a bit different being installed as we speak… :lol1:
i will have pictures by next week, i havent seen it (in the flesh) myself but its 2/3 the way through… andrew and i was asked to fit this one as it was particularly difficult. anyway, neither of us could afford a week off work let alone both of us. :lol1: truth being i hate flying so i wasnt considering it. we opted for two fitters and two helpers to do the work. its being fitted now in… Russia. 😕 flyings bad enough, but flying there! 🙄

that’s fantastic stuff ! i’ve seen the pics before, but not how it’s done, i figured you’d’ve used rolls of vinyl, cut to the required widths, it seems alot of work to cut strips off of sheets, and apply individually,

i guess you could always laminate with clear floor vinyl if you wanted it to last a bit longer !

just had a thought on how to laminate large scale floors……

get one of the ride on mini tarmac squishers, mount a roll of laminate above the drum, place the laminate under the drum, and just drive, instant application / squeegee all in one !

Rob, was this fitted wet or dry 🙄 :lol1:

we have tried the logs cut to required widths but is too hard for a person to work with. i.e. 50mtrs at .5 inch after a few minutes working the roll/real falls to the side and all the vinyl gets tangled.
it was tried on feeding reels but people would cut off more than required or that they could manage and again the vinyl would stick to itself or stretch and ended up in the bin. so best solution was to cut what is needed into manageable lengths.
hope that makes sense im babbling a bit there… :lol1:

hey, rob, flying to russia isnt a problem, i flew to domodedovo airport, was very "comfortable", lol. Its the underground you wanna watch out for, quite an interesting experience,
when you get near the next stop, you expect a noise or a call out to let you know what station and when its coming etc. not in russia, they just switch all the lights off and then on again, lol

    Robert,

Kudos to your brother. I know dozens of artist’s that haven’t even had a sniff of public acknowledgment, even through art college. It’s great that he’s done as well as he has from such a background. Very inspirational work indeed, and I don’t just mean this piece.

Now if only that video had some Benny Hill music playing in the background…. 🙂
