thinking about getting corel x4 but am currently using omega 2.1. now, my question is, and please forgive me if its a bit of a silly question! if i were to get corel, and start using it to create files etc, can i then save the file in corel and transfer it over to omega? and vice versa, if i were to create a file in omega, can i then save it and transfer it over to corel open it up and use it/print it off etc? i have an edge fx at the moment and am looking at getting a roland ink jet, so would like to get corel x 4 as it seems to be a decent software package. just woundered if i can mix and match files if i were to have both programmes and be able to use both printers? (?)

we have both… we do 99% of design work in Corel. We use the Export to AI to transfer to Omega which is used mainly as a cutter.

To transfer back from Omega, well if Omega writes PDF or EPS files then it is likely to work, but golden rule with graphics is start designing it in the application your familar with and keep it there.

thanks dave. just wondered if it was ok to do or if their would be any type of conflict/compatibility problems. i’m looking at getting an ink jet real soon as i have an edge fx and a roland cx-24 at the mo and want to go down the ink jet route. like the idea of the corel x 4, looks good and comes recommended. would be handy though if i can save and swap! thanks again dave.

I’ve been working with another sign maker who has Omega, I send AI V4 files from X4 for basic line work and it goes into their system no problem.Omega may well take higher versions but I’ve never tried.
When Omega files come back I’ve always put the plt file into Signlab V8 and them exported into Draw but if Omega can export as EPS – AI – PDF then they should go directly into Draw.

We basically do the same. The most common apps we use is Omega and Illustrator. Haven’t got to grips with Corel yet so that is mainly used for converting files if we have problems with either of the other two.

Omega 2.1 can take Illustrator files up to version 8 and we’ve been able to import up to cs2 in Omega 2.61. Corel 4 can save as Illustrator version 1 to CS3 so shouldn’t have any problems there. Only problem we’ve had in the past is:
The file gets imported in to Omega as a blank which can normally be resolved by saving as an earlier version or re-saving the object as a fill rather than a stroke.

The cut lines get imported in to Omega as print lines which we resolve by selecting changing to cut lines (black).

Never had a problem saving from Omega to Illustrator or other software.
    Hope this helps.

Since you are STILL using Omega 2.1 exporting to a lower AI / EPS version should be fine. As for going the other way you can do the same or export / save from Corel as CMX 5.0

With Omega 2.6 and up I have a Corel Spot Color Palatte that when used and you save as a PDF and import into Omega all the colors are saved so no color reassigning needs to be done.

There is a Corel palette on the Omega CD but it’s not a complete (real) Spot palette as Corel has defined – Corel’s Spot color palette feature has it’s problems which no one north of the border seems to want to explain to me.
