  • Why are my Illustrator gradients changing to rainbow?!!

Posted by Gary Jones on May 5, 2009 at 9:33 am

I’m hoping someone can shed some light on a problem I’ve been getting on this one project. Basically it’s a gradient design for a vehicle wrap. It starts orange at the bottom and fades to white at the top – very simple gradient. However, when we save and immediately re-open the file, the gradient transforms to the rainbow gradient swatch.

I’ve managed to find one case of this on the net but unfortunately the solution didn’t apply to our problem. We use both CS2 and CS3 on a daily basis and have never come across this problem before. Any help will very much be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I’ve not had that happen before.

Stabbing in the dark here Jon, but have you made a new swatch for your gradient?

John, I should have made a new swatch for the colour as I wouldn’t have the problem now but didn’t foresee this happening. It’s strange because I can open the EPS in other software ok, the thumbnail is correct, it prints fine but just won’t appear correct when I open in Illustrator where it was created.

Usually issues like this can be solved by deleting the ai preferences file. Also cures things like tools missing or not working etc.

Just save your work, close Illy then go here:

    Documents and Settings>user name>Application Data>Adobe>Adobe Illustrator CS3 (or CS2 etc) Settings>AIPrefs

Delete the AiPrefs file, empty recycle bin then restart Illustrator. Only problem is that you will have to reposition your tool bars etc for personal preference.

    In Corel Draw….
if you fade from CMYK Orange to CMYK White you Should be okay
if you fade from Pantone Orange to CMYK White you will cause crazy results
if you fade from Pantone Orange to RGB White you will cause crazy results
if you fade from CMYK Orange to RGB White you will cause crazy results

The correct way with a Pantone colour is to fade from Pantone Orange 100% tint to Pantone Orange 5% tint.

On screen looks fine, on print looks different on many combinations.

The Pantone issue in Corel can be solved by using Pantone 1% of colour instead of white – should separate correctly then.
