Nice shading! How do you choose to blend the shade? I tend to stipple the blend. there are many variations!

    Hi Martin

I have just painted some blinds for a local shop. I used one shot lettering enamels. But I didnt stencil. I would recommend using quite a thick paint so that it wont run under the stencil. A thick undercoat maybe?

    Hi everyone.

I have been away for a few days. Blimey lots of responses to the question! Thanks!

My main area is hand lettered signs. I was asked to quote for the window and just wondered about printed vinyl as an option,

When I said bubbles, I was referring to the ghosting around the lettering when 2 layers are applied over each other.

The size is 29cm high by 211cm

    Thanks for the help

This picture is one of a load from my grandmas photo album, there were a load of pictures in it from the 1930’s but behind all of those were these old pictures.

I have my own lil’ dog that comes with me on some jobs….

her names Kim. She’s a Bedlington Terrier x Jack Russell 😎

    Hiya

Whenever you do a gold job its always good to dab a bit of the size somewhere near where you are working (if you are gilding a window, paint a little area near your work so you can judge the time to gild without wiping marks onto your work!) 😎

    Hi

    Thanks for the comments.

The shoe is made from 2 pieces of dibond with foamex in the middle.

Then I sanded down the dibond and gave it a coat of primer (extra grippy) then undercoat and 2 glosses.

I had a good look around at the other hanging signs in the area and none of them had an extra bit of chain down the bottom so I thought it should be ok? but if not I will pop down and fit an extra bit. 😎

    Hi Vicki

You want to watch out if you are sticking it straight onto the gloss. Because you are just relying on the layer of gloss! You may want to get the bit you are sticking to sanded down for better adhesion 😎

    Hiya,

Its all painted, but with this window I experimented with using my cutter to do outlines for the side windows and the lowest lettering on the main window. I couldnt get low enough to do it because the inside of the window is built up to the bottom of the window.
Its the first time I have used any stencils but I just couldnt physically fit into a position to write it!!! 😥

Hopefully some people will get back to me! one guy was impressed with my work and he wants me to have a look at doing his canalboat. That would be brilliant because some of the work on the boats is amazing and I would love to give it a go!
Im definately getting through to people that traditional signs are cool! I know not everyone wants handlettered but im determined to keep it going around here if I can! Its getting your foot in the door that I find takes a bit of time but once enough people know what you do then word will spread!……….
I think your work is great! do you find it easier to find traditional jobs over there? 😎

    Bernardo!

It seems we think alike!, I am trying to only do hand lettered work and it is a real struggle at times.
I get really angry at some people. For example I have been into a local chemist (pharmacy) about 3 times because his shop is ancient and the fascia above was gold leaf on black. …Really old but it needed retouching or renovating. I told him that I do traditional stuff, showed him my work and he seemed impressed and told me that he liked the old look…..
I went past the other day and the wooden fascia that just needed repairing and the gold re gilding has been ruined! Black vinyl with a horrible thick font in gold vinyl……aaaaaaaaaaagggghhhhhhhh!! (:)

    Hi!

I havent done any window splashes before. Ive only ever written on the inside….coat after coat, then varnish over the top!!
No one has asked me to do one of those yet!
Do you do the splashes on the outside?
Im not really a speedy painter so I would probably take longer than Jill.

Jill you mentioned latex primer, they used a latex paint where I trained years ago that you painted around the letters, acting as a stencil…sponging colours together…not worrying if you went over the edge with the sponge because the latex would peel off after you had finished. Just like a computer cut masque.
Is that the same stuff? I cant seem to buy liquid stencil anywhere nowadays. It would come in really handy.

Nicola, the sign is all hand painted. I dont have a cutter at the minute. I only do handlettered stuff 😎

Bernardo, Its not easy to sell the idea of handlettered signs here either! potential customers dont give you enough time to do the job properly! They want signs the next day! It doesnt work like that though does it!!! 🙄

Thankyou! 😀 The red on black seems to work in some lights! I may try a different red, then if it looks wrong it can easily be painted over again. I was trying to use the colours that I think would of been used in the past. Im going to use the board when I go to craft fairs etc.
Im still trying to convince people to go for this kind of look in the old villages and pubs. People want signs yesterday!
I am getting nowhere with pubs though. They are replacing old signs with the (fibreglass?) types that go over the top. The pictorials are all printed pictures. Its a sad time I think. Im just hoping that it’ll swing back to handlettered because thats what I think the old village pubs should be.

Yep! Its had the varnish treatment! It took bloomin ages cos it was 2 of the same! I tried to keep them both at the same stage, the blending on glass is quite tricky I found because what you see on the inside isnt what it looks like on the other side! I had to keep nipping in and out! they took just over a week, but some days you can only do a little bit so they are not really whole days! 😮

For the house names I give them a coat of varnish because they will probably be cleaned so that way the gold is protected from scratches &c.

    Hiya!
The gold leaf is pressed and suspended between tissue paper in the booklets. The lettering is written using gold size. I use a clear gold size and add a touch of colour to it so you can actually see what you are doing! Then you apply the gold. Its held onto the sheet when you take it out of the book so you press it onto your lettering. You apply it when its at the correct tacky stage, which is something that you get a feel for after a while. Then the excess gold can be cleaned off with a wet sponge and hopefully the gold comes off the areas around the lettering!

Thanks for all the ideas! I think im going to design something for my car! I dont have a van at the moment, I use a vw estate. Ive already put a sign through the windscreen!!
Im getting to the stage where I feel a van would be very useful! A lot more usable space for a big version of my ad. 😀 Thanks again!

😎 Do you find that you spend most of your time looking up at signs and not where you are actually walking? I know I do!!

john, where can you get the pens you mentioned for chalkboards? would you have to get them from somewhere like Handovers?? I thought I’d have a little go at a chalkboard. Ive always used one shot poster paints for the posters that Ive done in the past, how do the plaka paints compare?? 😎

Nice job! I know what you mean about the ouline not showing up on the photo!! A lot of my jobs use gold leaf and you only ever see the real effect if you catch it in the best light for the photo. But whenever I go to take a photo the skies darken! 😕 The shadows on old signs used to be a lot more diverse. I think a lot of people nowadays only ever see a shadow that was created by the computer. Another pic :lol1: The secondary text is in pink and does not show up so well on the blue. The customers choice. It looks better in the light!

    Hiya!
I didnt really know what to charge for them! I did 2 A-boots! I charged him £200 each in the end, but I wanted to charge more! I never know how far you can push the prices, but im learning! 😀
I didnt want to do a standard A board because theres getting to be a real lack of individuality about them now. I like the idea of coming up with something unique! unfortunately the customers dont always share the enthusiasm! (:)

    hello Carrie!
Thanks! Yep Ive got a few jobs under my belt now since starting on my own at the beginning of the year. Hopefully I can keep getting the jobs cos we took a bit of a gamble with me doing this! My girlfriend works full time and with the money Ive been getting so far we are just about doing it! but I need the luck to hold whilst I build up customers, contacts etc.! 😉
The sign bracket was from Iron Designs, I just rubbed it down and gave it a coat of black!

😉 I added the name to their A board so they dont just have the bit of paper in the window! I know what you mean though.I’ll try and convince them to let me do them a menu!. The fascia took a few days back and forth, Paint the background (day 1), draw out and goldsize the lettering, gold leaf(day 2), add shadow and white lettering (day3) I did pop back and add the border when I fitted the projecting sign.

If I was to do the sign to ‘fit in’ that would mean foamex, warping and waving in the wind, vinyl shrinking in the sun and plastic cracking and fading in the sun…but seeing as im trying to improve the area I decided upon gold leaf and paint. The council need to stop shops like the co-op and woolworths destroying the shops that they go into, both inside and out…they need to have their fascias sympathetically written, hopefully hand lettered!
I like the idea of a vintage car with wide wheels and racing stripes…as long as they are painted…mate.

I’ll try and get a picture! then you can see what I mean! Its the customers choice of sign with my design on it. Its a flat metal rectangle bent over at the end and bolted straight to the wall. I would have personally gone for a nice frame with a wooden sign but at the end of the day you are guided by the customer! They pays the money!
