thanks for the information! Im going to have a go at putting something together thats very basic to begin with mainly due to the fact that I have absolutely no funds available!! I think I need to get my name out there as Ive only been on my own since the beginning of the year. So I need to build things up slowly. I only have my home p.c. and a load of brushes, gold leaf, one shot, etc. I work from home (which we are trying to do up as well!) Ive taken over the dining room as a workshop, but im slowly taking over the whole house!!! 😎

stop a grinder with your groin!……..seriously someone I worked with years ago was working on the edge of a bench grinding and it bounced onto his groin………….ow! the material of his jeans stopped it just in time!!! An apprentice spilt white spirit on his trousers on the groin region once and he asked us how to dry it off, we said for a joke, use a match!!….he did….oops! 👿 They were both ok though so we can laugh about it now!….well I can anyway!

You gotta make your own mahl stick! A length of dowel sponge on the end squished into a ball then wrapped up with a bit of chamois or any old cloth!!

    Hiya!
You only need to get brushes that are quite cheap to begin with, instead of getting pure sable you could get a few chisel edged brushes that are a mixture. To clean the brushes i use white spirit and then shape the brushes again after use with vaseline.

Traditional is the way! Look into my eyes! 😮 ..Yeah give it a go cos you’ll get a hell of a lot more satisfaction out of a job when you know its all done by your own hand!! I use a company called ‘Gold leaf supplies’ I agree that its best to practice, practice, practice!!. Do yourself a drawing onto paper, tape it up and paint it in. Then do it all over again! Good luck!

Hi Jill! This pub has got one of the best frames that Ive seen in a long time, but the guy that has taken it over isnt living in the real world!! The first hanging sign is about 4′ high by 3′ wide. It has a portrait on both sides of a man (head and shoulders) with the name of the pub above the picture in gold leaf with shadow……….The second hanging sign is 5′ high by 4′ wide. 3/4″ ply with a thick frame glued and tacked on. The name of the pub is in gold leaf with shadow, the secondary text is in immitation gold. It has a thin border line around the edge. Both signs are double sided.
I went past the pub and I popped in because it is one of the very last surviving hand written pubs around here!! I wanted to redo it for him, to keep it hand lettered! I gave him what I considered to be a very low price of £900 to take down both signs, redo one and completely remake the second. He just laughed at the price and said it was ‘way too much..’ eh? ‘what would you call a fair price?’ I asked him. He wouldnt tell me and just kept saying ‘Youre way too expensive’……..I couldnt believe it!! Am I not going to be able to compete with vinyl…..I reckon the pub will soon have hideous signs up there…….. (:) aaaaggghhhh!!!

The hotel needed changable boards with inserts, so we found some hammer in threads that were perfect for the job! A tip……..dont give out unrealistic dates that you will finish by!! otherwise you’ll be buying up all available hobnobs in your area! and writing through the night! 😮
