aj asked when did I start carving?

I started when I was 9 (1956) carving kerchief slides (I was in scouting). Our monthly magazine always had a different design for one with a short step by step. I took to it quickly and was hired to teach it at summer camp when I was 14. I started carving for dollars in 1975. This is a pic of a pic of my first relief carving that I sold for $350.
Nothing here is painted….all natural woods (cheery, black walnut(2 kinds), maple, willow, poplar, pine and butternut) I think that’s all of them.
Funny how my first relief piece was a sign.
    Hope you like it. 🙂

    Yeah, s’alright I suppose.

No, what I mean is…..bloody eck! Smashing.

If I could do that (and it’s a big if) I wouldn’t want the customer to take it away.

    Thanks Guys!

Andy, I started selling those slides when I was fourteen. People asked how I could part with them? Easy, I said. First, the fun is in making them. Then I make you happy by selling it to you. which makes me feel good too. Then I’m happy cause I got money 🙂 :). Then I have the fun to make another….and round it goes…for quite a long time now. 🙂

    Thanks Again!

Joe, please do me a favour and stop posting pictures of your work, I have turned a nasty shade of green and would like to return to a normal colour :lol1:

That is a true talent and if I could create something that was 1/4 as good as any of those I would be so proud of myself.
Thanks for sharing them with us and despite what I said above don’t stop posting your work.
