With currently searching for a new mutt for the family, I thought I would steal a thread from another forum that I’m on.

So if you’ve got one of mans best friends, lets see if it resembles you 😉

John, I love your forum, very informative.
    Here is my little Sukey.
    She is our second pug.
If you want a dog that is so ugly it’s cute, who is incredibly loyal, good with kids, and clings like Velcro, get a pug.
We had a fawn one for 9 wonderful years, now we have a black one. They both shed, but the black hair is less noticeable.
They also have small poop that is easy to clean up. hahaha
    Love….Jill

wish i had some pictures of my dogs on my PC but i don’t… have one in a picture frame next to me on my desk and loads at my parents house… just none to share 😕

I had three beagles… but all have since passed. loved them to bits and would buy another in a second, but have decided against it.

    they were called:

    Buddie
    Ben
    Bruno

all brothers… I had Bruno the longest. i argue it was 16 years but my dad recons 15… very long time for him to live i know. in the end i had to have him put down which i never want to go through again. i took him to the vet thinking he was sick but got told his kidneys etc had packed in on him and that was that. a quick injection while he was in my arms as i sat whispering in his ear apologising to him… and that was that. wouldn’t wish it on anyone…

the picture i attached isn’t Bruno, but found on Google and looks remarkably like him in his prime. Ben was slightly different as he had darker markings whilst Buddie was only light tan and white…

This is Jess, 4 years old at the end of the month. Usual pose is with a stick, ball or frizbee. Today she worked for her keep for the first time by helping to round up the sheep ready for shearing. Not sure she knew what she was meant to be doing but she went where we told her and it worked! 🙂

That’s one lovely looking dog…are they as much of a handful as the books would have you believe (males dominating other dogs and not being able to let them of the lead when on walks)?

Only interested because I was talked out of buying a Malamute by a friend who has kept dogs a lot longer than me.

They can be quite a challenge if you are not prepared for them. You can socialise the pants of off of them when they are puppies, and they can be angels with other dogs. Then they hit the teenager stage and everything you ever taught them goes out the window and you start again! 🙄

Loads of debates about walking sled dogs off lead, some say you can, some say you cant. We never let ours off because he has a high prey drive and in certain situations, VERY selective hearing! They need a lot of stimulation, both mental and physical, like all working dogs. When they dont get it they make up their own entertainment!

We work our lad in the winter and show in the summer, so he is always doing something.

Problem is, they are adorable balls of fluff as puppies, but very quickly turn into 9 stone machines that want nothing more than to run and pull. So many of them end up in rescue because people dont realise what they are
letting themselves in for. Same with a lot of large breeds. Saying that, if you put the work into them, they are fantastic animals. He never ceases to bring a smile to your face with his antics 😀

Thanks for that Adrian; we did over 6 month research before we decided which type of dog we could give a good home to.

The funny thing is the reason we found our dogs was because the lady we got them from breeds Alaskan Malamute, the mother of our dogs was her dog and the sire was her daughter’s Springer spaniel.

The only thing I didn’t enjoy about our research was meeting some of the breeders and their idea of looking after their dogs, we ended up going via recommendations of the Kennel Club but even some of their members left me feeling uncomfortable about the animals left in their charge.

Over thirty dogs’ names and only one over two syllables long (well done Richard – Branigan).

Does this tell us anything profound?

yes, a dogs name should be short and sharp so that it responds quicker and recognises it quickly. 😀

    Marcella!

So ‘Clemartil Christmas Present’ (Dan’s daft pedigree name)(not chosen/registered by us, of course) is no good then I suppose…

I can’t really see (hear) me in the middle of the field behind my house yelling ‘Clemartil Christmas Present! Heel!’. Apart from the funny looks, he’d be gone before I got to the fourth syllable.

My son Isaac really wanted to name our dog Fluffy but I simply had to put my foot down. 😮

Some Welsh folk have a habit of making words longer with the addition of ‘-a’ on the end when annoyed or shouting.

    i.e.

    Fluffy-a

Fluffier? Who calls a dog fluffier? That’s what they’d all be asking themselves.

That’s mine exactly. He’s a border collie (see a few of those here) mix, but mixed with what I don’t know – staffordshire? boxer? great dane?

He’s never been allowed off leash when he wasn’t confined in some way – if he sees a squirrel or a cat, it’s all over – he would be gone before I could begin to react – it’s so fast I don’t think he actually consciously realizes it before he’s in motion. Letting him off leash would get him killed.

His border collie blood makes him a tremendous runner, but he had a case of hip dysplasia that was actually showing up by the time he was 6 months old & caused his hip to actually dislocate by the time he was 2. They told me he would need a double hip replacement – that was 9 years ago, and vitamin/nutritional supplementation, moderate exercise and keeping his weight down have kept him going strong as long as he doesn’t run too much. It saddens me he can’t run more.

Peter, Lynn – I love what I can see of your house. I’ve had rooms in 2 different houses painted precisely that color.

    Kimberley,

Your dogs look like the australian koolie, bred in australia for sheep and cattle work.

Not to be confused with the german koolie.

Not a lot of info on them though. All I could find was this. The wife and I went to some sheepdog trials a few years ago, and the Koolie blitzed them on the day. Lovely dog, love working though.

    http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/2000/a … eds?p=1603

A Koolie is often described as looking like a cross between a rough Collie and a border Collie

My friends had 2 chows. Lovely looking dogs as you say but really really stubborn/stupid.

We babysat their puppy on one occasion, most frustrating day I can remember…

… no good for our hot summers here either. I think from memory, one died from heat exhaustion last summer….

End of the day, you have to be really dedicated to be a chow owner….

the house they went to live at, that’s his garden that leads directly on to the sand, I wish I could live there.

ah well i’m sure they are having a ball I agree they are great, shame they have such a bad name, its the owners not the dogs, mine are as daft as, Rocky barks at the gate but thats natural he’s just being territorial, the other 2 are puppies so still playing around but when you come in my house they’ll smother you (in a nice way of course) god my dogs would love that pool and me more it looks great there

After a long 2 month search & managing to avoid buying from one of the vast amount of puppy farmers up here, we now have our new pup Gus😀

Unfortunately we have to wait another two weeks before we can pick him up 🙁

    This is/was a great thread!

He’s a Newfoundland but most people refer to them as ponies or bears 😀

Stayed up there for six months while trying to set up a new business, which didn’t work out but a fantastic experience.

Most have been 100 to 200 dogs that weekend, a fantastic sight seeing them pulling the sledges 🙂
