    Hi all
a customer as asked me how much the vinyl is to buy,
I just wondered if anyone as a retail price or do you just stick a percentage on top of the price of the vinyl. Re Ray:)

I’m always a bit stumped when I’m asked to sell someone a ‘piece’ of vinyl, I will usually charge 4 x the average cost per metre, but never know if I am doing right or wrong!

I never tell them the cost price, and my price to sell off the roll varies depending on my stock levels. I have charged £20 a meter quite easily for Oracal 651 in the past (old stuff I dont use anymore) but if its in relation to a job I tell them that its almost impossible to give a price per meter as every job is bespoke and my suppliers price according to the size of my order.

Its a load of cobblers but they seem to love it when you call their job Bespoke! lol

btw when i started researching this i found vinyl prices very quickly, i would probably tell the customer the truth, quote for a high end vinyl, and point out that its your design skills that he’s buying, if he googles and finds out you lied about the price, he’s not going to trust you in the future…

I think any customer who asks the question is a cheeky b*gger anyway, I dont ask how much the man at the Burger Van pays for his materials but I could find out if I chose to.

i always price vinyl when i send a quote, i like to break down the prices in the quote so the customer can see what they’re getting and, if they decide to drop one thing, it’s easier for me to work out!

i retail 651 at £14.50pm and 751 at £25pm, reflective at £30pm, all 610. others will have other prices. if i’m selling plain vinyl right off the roll, uncut, then it’s only 4x cost!

if the customer chooses to look up a price online, then that’s up to them, i’m giving them a price at which they can buy from me, they wouldn’t expect a green grocer to sell them their wares at cost would he!

As we all know the cost of vinyl is just a very small expense but we all still have overheads to pay for whether we are selling a full vehicle wrap or a metre of vinyl. We all know the price of copper pipe but don’t question the plumber when he tells you he wants £40 per hour.

I have in the past told customer that it costs £3-4 quid a metre but have always followed it up with the fact the the unit costs £15000 a year + £4500 business rates + insurance + van + machinery + wages etc etc

Everyone in business is here to make a profit!!

    Just my take on it

    Cheers

I don’t quote vinyl prices at all, I give a price for the overall job on my invoices and that’s it.
It is true that customers could ring a supplier and ask about prices but would they be quoted the same price that a business with a history of trading would be given ? With most suppliers discount is built up over time. Plus a lot of suppliers have a minimum number of metres per colour and a delivery charge on top, if application tape is required then that would be another expense as well.
As others have said though it’s not just the materials that the customer is paying for, as with any business there are overheads which must be taken into account.

I think it’s a bit like asking an artist how much his paints cost him when you’re trying to buy a piece of his work.

If they want to go and buy the vinyl from a supplier and cut some letters out with their scissors feel free!!! 😛 😀 :lol1:

Unfortunately some customers just can’t seem to work out that it takes all the other costs and labour to make the finished product.

If i went around charging to wipe peoples bums all i’d have to pay for would be the toilet roll, but i’d still want some extra money for doing it! If you see my point.

Was the original post about selling unconverted vinyl off the roll so a bloke who walk into the shop ? If so…..

    Less than a metre, COST x 2
More than that, cost + 50%
If the customer is a 15 year old kid who wants to pimp his Radio control plane or surfboard, he gets offcuts for free, the rest at cost (or slightly less!!) I pity the young, and love the ones who do something beside listening to hip hop music and wear baggy pants.

Other sign companies in the area pay cost + 25% ( the ones I dont trust) or they can replace what they take (the ones I trust) when they get stock / trade for another colour I may want. In our area we are 400 km away from the closest supplier, so it makes sense to help your brothers – in – trade.

    Live and let live…….
