we put the account details on the invoice, so that gives the customer another method instead of chq.

I just use a standard invoice which is generated by the accounting software I use ( Quickbooks Pro) and my terms and conditions are laid out on the back. You can avoid a lot of headaches over payments by making sure your customer understands your payment terms the first time that you meet them, then make sure you repeat them when the customer places an order. My terms are due on completion so I always make sure that when I go out on site I take the invoice with me and give it to the customer once the job is done. For vans I have the invoice ready when they drop the van off with me and am ready to print off another copy when they return to collect the van just incase they have forgotten it :lol1:
I think the type of customer you have makes a big difference as well, when I started I had all the wrong sorts of customers, people who wanted everything done for next to nothing, cheap as chips, no loyalty and of course their mates that they sent round were the same.
Now I have got rid of all of those sort of customers and I am lucky enough to have customers who are more interested in a quality job at a fair price, they call me if they need anything doing and don’t shop about to see if they can get something cheaper.
You can never protect yourself 100% and there is always going to be the odd one who catches you out and you end up having to chase for money.

I have only once had issues geting paid and it was with a big building development company. A quick search on the UKSB Toolbar and a Notice of Intended Action letter later and I was paid before the end of the week.

i’ve on;y been properly messed about once, arriving at 9am and beginning to unload ladders did the trick, i’d warned i was gonna do it and by signing my quote they’d agreed to grant me permission to remove signs in the event of non payment, they still asked why i’d arrived with ladders (and a big handy mate!) and i told them i’d come for the sign, £600 was found within 24hrs after that!

otherwise, do as martin does, tell them it’s payment upon completion, works for me.

Just don’t make the same sort of mistakes that I made, I would go to jobs without the invoice sometimes and tell the customer I would pop it in latter, in some cases a week or so went by before I remembered to do it or was passing. This gave the customer the impression I wasn’t in a hurry to get paid so they took their time paying.
Now I don’t leave without it ever and have had no problems getting paid when the job is complete.
