    This material looks about right!

Do you think if this was applied onto an IJ180 film it would have better longevity? Would definitely make it an easier film to work with I’m sure!

Cheers for that, Day Glow was the term used by James at 3M. Been in contact with them and he is shooting emails round the office to see if there is a history of materials used.

Just wondered if anyone on here had a prior knowledge of it. We will see what 3M have to offer but I can see this being awkward to get hold of. :awkward:

    Rob,

Cheers for that  just so you are aware I am not competing to get the title behind me. I am purely doing it for the experience and chance to meet people and network. I am going into it open minded and hoping to put up a good fight and see where it goes. Its a nice excuse to get away for a week as well haha!

In terms of getting accredited I am one step ahead of you. I am currently working on 2 different accreditations and hoping by the middle of next year to have both

Still looking forward to the competition

My preference is probably 3M but its because of my use of it. I have not had much experience with Avery print media but if it performs as well as Avery Supreme wrap film does then it will be awesome.

3M IJ180 – Used for 95% of printed jobs, needs to be applied in ambient temperatures of 18 degrees… awesome film but make sure you follow the post heating steps and for any recesses leave a bridge of a minimum 100mm before pushing it in.

3M IJ480 – Used for 5% of printed jobs… again an amazing film but it is trickier to fit and only needed for deep or double recesses, this needs to be fitted in ambient temperatures of 20 degrees +++ . You will find that you need to apply more pressure to stop any air bubbles in your final product. Also when bridging leave a gap of 200mm all around the recess and heat that whole 200mm section before fitting it into the recess.

In all films cleanliness is key. Preparation with the 3M Surface prep is needed for both of these films to hold any form of warranty with the manufacturer. They should not fail if you go over the correct methods of fitment

Go see it, in reality how many high roof vans do you do?

Will it still take standard transits etc?

We’re lucky that our neighbour lets us use his unit for the bigger jobs when he’s not using it.

I did have an image on my phone but it is not there now, I could potentially fit a standard transit in but it would be very tight I believe. The guy seems to have changed his mind short term on who he wants as a tenant. Apparently the area has had issues with vehicle based companies causing blockages in the estate as it is quite tight .I said to him that we would be no bother as we never tend to take on more than 2 vehicles at a time. Hate the idea of storing customers vehicles outside.

We will see if he changes his mind again :bangshead:

Not used any yet Dan. I’m a paint protection virgin. I’ll have a look at the hexis. Do they do it in kit form?

It honestly is an amazing material. They can offer kits or they can sell it too you in a roll ready to fully wrap. This stuff conforms like no other. Paint protection is good but I would suggest getting some tuition with it, also make sure you are in a highly dust free space. this stuff drags dirt in like there is no tomorrow and it shows.

Is it just ventureshield that you have used. I went on a brilliant course with Hexis using the BodyFence material. That stuff is absolutely amazing! full wrap capability so there are no exposed edges. The gloss on it is insane also.

Do not want to step on any toes as the 3M material is also lovely but there are other options.

Always apply paint protection wet  Trust me you are going to want to get some paper towels down to soak it up!

I did put a bit of a feeler around for local space to rent. Got tagged in a few things on Facebook including a lovely little unit up for £500 a month. Mezzanine deck inside, but the only problem… The men deck has taken up so much room so larger vans won’t really fit in there anymore………

Do I go with it and find an extra side space to do other vans in??

I am in a similar position currently, looking to open up a commercial unit early next year. Will be my first and hopefully not my last. I just look at it and think it is so much money and get discouraged by it but I do believe the financial drive it will bring with it will be a valuable asset! The units I have been looking at are probably a bit to big for a small startup as they are 2400sqft at £14000+ pa!

    So scary!!

I would probably go for a 3M 1080 carbon or even an Avery Supreme although both of these options have the satin finish that many people do not want. There are some really nice gloss versions around somewhere or you can print your own 🙂

Although the stands I have found do not look very robust trust me they are. Used in motorsport a lot for quick jacking and have been put through rigorous testing.

In terms of health and safety, these stands have various safety features and testing is something I will have to look into?

    These are all really impressive!

I was thinking about this, been having a play with one at a company I do a lot of work for and really impressed. Again the build quality, ease and precise nature of the rolls roller is difficult to replicate but with the right ingredients it could be awesome and save a lot of money!

July 4, 2016 at 12:24 pm in reply to: Wrap Suppliers and training help

Each of those manufacturers will have separate training courses. For example Hexis training is held in the Hexis HQ in Lichfield. The 3M training is usually held at William Smith (Supplier near Newcastle).

In terms of suppliers I use a variation of William Smith and Spandex UK who cover all the manufacturers you have mentioned. What I will say is do not just buy materials from what you have heard about them. I would say put in some market research and find out your favourite materials with hands on experience.

Also you need to factor in many things to unit rental such as overheads, heating (beyond important!), cleanliness… If the unit is cheap but you cannot control the temperature then I would not use it for vehicle wrapping, again with dust and dirt control. Companies pour money into having clean units to work in as dust underneath a wrap does not look good at all.

Just some things to look out for not trying to put you off. Hopefully it all works out nicely bud and you can get those Instagram fame corner shots haha. :thumbup2:

I would obviously based on the customers opinion check the car over for further areas that could cause a problem. I would sand the areas already affected down and then use the 3M 94 Primer on these affected areas for good adhesion.

    I wouldnt walk away personally.

    Cheers guys!

The material was plotted prior to fitment and it is a 3M 1080 material :thumbup2:

The van had a full strip down prior to wrapping to get this ‘sharp’ finish. Was nice to wrap, easy shape to be honest and the bumper being in 3 parts it dropped on :thumbup2:

  • It could potentially be useful. Well only if you have IPAF trained staff anyway.

The only issue even with a lift is that you will have to be leaning out of the basket a lot to apply this. They are not really made to work with this sort of application. Would be safer than roofing ladders but would be inconvenient with the basket getting in the way

  • I would say the only safe way would be a roofing scaffold.

But the pricing of that would make your customer run away. If I was honest this is just one of those jobs I would never do purely down to health and safety and the cost of application.

June 17, 2016 at 12:34 pm in reply to: Autoglym lifeshine problems?

Simple answer would be a test patch (as long as your customer is happy). Pick an awkward spot that could potentially fail.

I would use the the necessary cleaning routine for your vinyl supplier. My favourite cleaner is the 3M Surface Prep for pre-prepped surfaces. Then apply and give it a couple of weeks.

To my knowledge the autoglym system you have shown is a carbon protection system. This should not in theory cause vinyl not to tack.

But I would tread carefully and test the product. If you are using for example the 3M 1080 call them before fitting as they may say straight away that is not covered by their warranty.

    Hope some of that helps?

To be honest £300 is not bad for that…

Supplied cut and fit you are looking at 2.5-3m of 1220 etch. Based on that I would probably personally charge £240 (£80plm) plus travel mileage of 40p per mile.

It is all about the distance you are travelling that affects the price. Just be careful how you approach the customer. If they want a breakdown for travel costs and you are charging £50-£80 travel or something like that they will look for a local company. Its better to have work that you cover a small amount of the travel cost and make profit on the work than have no work and have your customer source something closer. :thumbup2:

Thanks Dan …. I thought I was in the right ball park … As for travel it’s going to be 7 miles and 7 back … £240 seems quite reasonable

If it is 7 miles I would not bother charging mileage. I would only start charging mileage for anything out of a 10 mile radius of us. Anything under that is considered local business.

And you ALWAYS look after the locals 😉

I would honestly not recommend a pop up gazebo/tent as maintaining temperature will be a nightmare. In terms of building a garage that can be extremely costly. I would personally recommend finding an industrial unit that has a high roller shutter door and an indoor powered heater with thermostat :thumbup2: :thumbup2:

I just wish customers would realise that cheaper isn’t always better

  • I’ve thought about this before, obviously you have got to think of your liability insurances also. Adding something like a gazebo to the mix means something else that has potential to damage a customers vehicle, especially if you are choosing to use it to guard against wind.

I have used various pop up units before and they have worked amazingly well. The only problem I encountered was lighting. Some areas became difficult due to lighting conditions :thumbup2:

Good luck though bud, would be good to see someone come up with a solution.

I have to agree with people here, if your customers are complaining at the cost of wraps and that is making you by substandard materials then you need to rethink your business model.

I would highly recommend sticking to the ‘more expensive’ vinyls. The price difference isn’t much more and the cost goes to the customer… Not yourself. I have always found that customers that complain about the price usually complain about a lot more in the future
