  • Badly painted clear coat coming off under wrap

    Hi all
    Well this is awkward!
We just started wrapping a little smart car. Spent ages on the design, printed it all out, hours of cleaning, and this morning we start wrapping it…and the clear coat is not properly keyed to the coat below, and is failing and the wrap has pulled off a large chunk about 8 inches square.
We immediately stopped work, called the customer who has spent time and money converting this thing into a coffee wagon. Obviously she is gutted…as are we because it was a fun job up to this moment.

What do we do now? What can we suggest to the customer?
Do we just charge for the work we have done so far, put the car back together and walk away? Obviously it is not our fault, and she fully understands this.
Is there some way to fix this?

You’ll probably have to sand it down along with any other weak areas.

Simon, this usually happens when I remove wraps.
To happen on applications makes me think this was a super bad paint work.

    1) Redoing it properly in a paint body workshop and than wrapping.
    2) Remove lose paint parts – Reprinting and wrap again.

    Why No2?
Because if car goes to the body shop and gets fixed – when you wrap – paint will most likely come off when wrap is removed in few years. So car visited paint shop twice.

I would obviously based on the customers opinion check the car over for further areas that could cause a problem. I would sand the areas already affected down and then use the 3M 94 Primer on these affected areas for good adhesion.

    I wouldnt walk away personally.

    thanks everyone.
I have sent it to a bodyshop who will cut it back to below the clear coat on all the areas that are failing.

    Simon.
