Well guys, thanks for your support anyway!!!
Gareth 😀
Gareth,
Are you sure mate? About not have locals doing stuff?
We have done a lot of race bike livery this year and I know that Craig Gibson has done a few too. Also Nice Bike will do graphics for you.
With regards to price, you need to consider the cost of materials, time taken, experience etc. As I used to race myself I am aware of the costs and as such try and help out racers as much as possible price-wise and work out a good deal with riders who carry our logo.
Didn’t know you were doing that TT, didn’t even think you’d done the Manx.

MemberDecember 2, 2008 at 2:11 pm in reply to: can anyone help with fitting window tinting vinyl? Thanks for your help guys. It’s for my own car first, I’ve wanted the windows tinted. We have a local specialist tinting firm and I spoke to them about doing the job but the price was unreal, I know firms on the mainland that charge half the price of this guy and they are well respected.
Anyway. I decided I’d buy some material myself and have a crack at it, if I mess up I can do it again. I’ll be able to make mistakes and repeat it a good few times before I get to the cost of what I was being charged.
I’m not intending to get involved in the tinting on a commerical basis simply because I have a good bit of work with signage and liveries, but having some experience tinting is handy incase of any jobs in that line of work.
I’ll give it a go at the weekend, providing its not too cold off course.

It’s a 2006 Fiesta ST so the windows aren’t to bad. The rears quite curved.
Wasn’t sure if I was to fit wet or not as I’ve no idea about this type of job.

Sorry its a normal tow behind trailer. He’s a Gardiner.

Is he looking like a website address or something or is it a tint?
If its a tint get him to buy a tinted visor. The laws on these for the road were relaxed a year or so ago, to allow riders to when them in SUITABLE conditions.
If it’s just text thats not a really a problem. My own race lid has sponsors on the visor. I’ll get some pics. It’s about 10mm in height. Sat at the very bottom but also can be done at very top. I curve it to the right size to suit the visor also.

quote John Childs:What driver?
This is Apple kit you are talking about here. You just plug it in and it works.
I can only suggest that you make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes.
Yes John. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes, its the only one the Apple site allowed to be downloaded. iTunes works fine but the iPod isn’t reconisged. Vista keeps asking for the driver for the iPod. I’ve tried it on my old XP computer and it works fine.
I’ve looked on a few Apple specific sites and it seems everyone is having similar problems with the 3rd Gen Nano and Vista.
Thanks

MemberFebruary 26, 2008 at 12:05 pm in reply to: can somebody tell me whats the best 7 year vinyl?I use a mix of Avery, LG and Metamark vinyls. We sometimes use others but those are our main ones.
I’m quite keen on the Avery, it’s the material that I’ve used since I started and it’s been good, I’ve not had any problems with the vinyl failing which is reassuring. I use it for most applications including vehicle livery, event signage, race livery and general signage. Our supplier is also very good and helpful.
Funnily enough we buy the LG vinyl from the same supplier we get the Avery from. I don’t like to use it on long term applications such as vehicle livery or the like. I’d tend to use it for jobs such as event signage more. I’ve not had a problem with it either. I’ve found that on some jobs it’s easier to cut and weed than the Avery.
I’ve used the Metamark on a few occasions. I actually bought it in as they had a pretty close colour match to one that I couldn’t get from my Avery supplier anymore. It works well but it seems a lot less durable than the Avery and even LG but maybe thats just my opinion.

MemberFebruary 19, 2008 at 12:51 pm in reply to: does anyone have experience of setting a pcut 630 please?Anthony,
I run a similar setup to yourself. We run two Pcut 630’s (no problems) with Signblazer software on the Vista operating system. We haven’t actually had a problem with the software or cutters and we’ve been using them for a bit over a year.
I use Signblazer. My PC crashed and destroyed itself last week. Luckily I had a back-up of all files and designs. I had to reinstall the signblazer and when it was in Demo mode it let me cut ok. But this could have been due to being installed in the system before?
Maybe you could check on the SB forums themselves. I have spoken with Jerry from on there on a number of occassions with one thing or another. He has been really really helpful, infact I’ve found him a lot more helpful than Signwizard.
I’m not at the office right now to check our settings. I’ll be there this afternoon though so will check our settings and let you know what are settings are.
All the Best

Also try adjusting the cutting speed, this can sometimes help. I know on our Pcut machines that if we have a really big job or really small one, a slower cutting speed can make all the difference.

I haven’t seen any price increases from other suppliers, well those that you would notice much. But it’s about £10 a roll and when you order ten rolls its an extra £100.
I think I wouldn’t mind so much if I had been told there had been a price increase. Especially as it is the same guy I deal with everytime.
While you mention 700 series John, is it much superior to the 600 stuff?

Adam,
Do a lot of work for bikes. Never done a wrap though.
I remember that Jason Xuereb from on here, done a full wrap on a R6 a while ago. Have a wee hunt through the site and you should find it.
I think that your best to use a proper ‘wrap’ vinyl for bikes, especially with the number of curves etc.

quote marketdrayton:I actually supply plates, both “legal” and “show plates”.
Legals need to be of certain height (79mm for cars), spaced correctly & have the company name & postcode on the plate. This allows DVLA / Police to trace the manufacturer of the plate. They also, need to have the BS no in the right hand corner, and made of the BS components. The DVLA “will” check you purchase the correct materials.
We are always asked to make showplates, and if you change, let’s say, the GB badge to a Playboy, then this is illegal……This is sold as a showplate, and a disclaimer is signed by the customer to say they have purchased a reflective “sign” from us. In no way is it to be used upon a vehicle being used on the highway…….but all in legal jibberish. This does protect me.
When i spoke with the DVLA recently, then what Robert was on about may be coming into force, i.e. ” NOT FOR ROAD USE” or similar effect which has to be clearly eligible…..but the rule was coming into force in ’08 possibly….
craig
Hi Craig,
Thanks for that information. I’ve emailed the DVLA for some further information.

-
Kieran,
I’ve been looking into the number plate side of things lately. From what I understand is that to supply ‘Number Plates’ you need to be registered with the DVLA and can only produce your plates in the correct font, size etc. as Richard has mentioned.
But I looked a bit deeper, if you sell the plates as ‘Show Plates’ you can use any size, fonts etc that you want. But you must state that they are ‘Show Plates’ and not for road use. If the client decides to use them on the road then its their decision as you have covered you back saying that they are for show and not road use.
Just state in the paper work / invoice that they are not for road use and then your back is covered.
Correct me if I’m wrong though.

MemberDecember 5, 2007 at 6:55 pm in reply to: A question about Avery Vinyl good & bad points please?I’d mainly use Avery 600 and 700 series vinyl. We do a lot of vehicle work, a lot of the vans would see heavy use and abuse on a daily basis and we have had no problems with the vinyl.
I have been told about the situation a few years back but it never put me off. I’ve used the Avery stuff, its been good for me and many others. If the stuff was crap why would they still be trading in it? Surely someone would catch on if it was bad.
From your description of the letters falling off, as you put it, I get the feeling there has been something incorrectly done with the application of the vinyl. I normally would run some heat over the vinyl after application, especially on cold days, more to heat the panel and get a really good bound between the vinyl and the panel, thats the way I was taught to do it and I’ve never had a problem.

MemberDecember 3, 2007 at 10:05 am in reply to: suppliers please of Window Perforated Vinyl?Unfortunately we do not have facilities to print. I’ve looked into print machines but my work to date has not required a printer and I do not feel that at present it would be the ideal investment although possibly in future we will go for one of these print and cut machines. Hence the reason why I was wondering if it was available in other colours.
After having a think and seeing what I could come up with I spoke with the client again on Saturday and we discussed what he was looking for. We have more or less decided that we will apply the vinyl to the inside of the window and then apply a layer of dark window tinting film over the top of the vinyl which will give the darkened out effect. I am hoping that this method will work and if it doesn’t we may have to resort to plain black vinyl.

Ok guys,
Thanks for all your input. I’ve just spoken with Express Banners, got a quote for what I’m after and will forward to the customer.
I will let you know how we get on.
Regards
Jonny -
Hi Guys,
From the amount of work that I’m expecting to be banners I don’t really think that I need to have banner specific vinyl to be fair this is more due to the fact that it would probably money wasted. Although if banners do become a popular part of my work then I will invest in some of this vinyl. With regard to Avery vinyl I’ve never had a problem with it for any other application, although I do believe that there was a problem with their adhesive a few years ago.
I know that the standard vinyl would probably cause some problems with banners if they where incorrectly stored so this is what is putting me off. It think it could see a bit of abuse so I think that the idea of getting one printed from Express Banners like Peter has suggested is probably by best route at the minute. Peter do you have a contact number and a person to speak to in Express Banners? What is there turn around like?
Cheers for your help.

Robbie,
You where quite similar to myself. I found this site via a search in google and had a look around. I signed up and after a few weeks paid up my ‘Bronze’ membership. I thought I would try it out first to see the benefits and things like that. I have to say the ‘Bronze’ package is good but when my current one expires I shall be investing in either Gold or USKG simply for the benefits of those.
I started out with very limited experience, and everyone on here was supportive, you get the odd harsh comment but the guys and girls are only trying to help you out and give you some advice.
Depending on if your after logos of companys you should have a look on Brands of the World. It’s a good source of logos in vector form.

Its more down to personal preference mate. Avery and Image Perfect both do similar ranges of 3 – 5 year and 5 – 7 year vinyls. I tried one roll of the Image Perfect stuff and didn’t get on with it, nothing wrong with the material, just able to work with it the way I wanted, so I’m an Avery man myself. In saying that Metamark stuff is good too, if a tad more expensive than the equivalent Avery. Trimwell in Lisburn supply metamark.

No bother Stephen. MotoX plastics are a bugger to work with anyway.

I get a lot of spam but 99.9% of it is caught by the spam filter on Yahoo. But it does also catch some legit emails too, so I check daily just to see if I reconigse any names and then empty it daily.

Hi Guys,
I spoke briefly to Robert Horne Group yesterday and they told me that they will look into getting some of the application tape I was using before, via tracking the stock codes. But anyway I ordered a roll of Metamark 4075 application tape from Trimwell to try it.
I’ll just have to keep trying until I get a brand that I like and stick with it.
Cheers for your help, very much appericated.
Jonny
-
Hi Lynn,
No I haven’t. The tape I was using before was unbranded so its nearly impossible to track it down again. The roll I’m using now that is giving problems is branded as OV Tape or something along those lines anyway.
What sort of money is the perfect tear stuff, similar to R-tape? Who supply it. I suppose it’s all down to personal preference at the end of the day and I’ll have to try them and see which one i perfer.
David,
Thanks your a great help. Yeah, I was doing the upwards technique of peeling before Bazza showed me how he does it and it works so much better.
If you could check that for me that would be mega.
Thanks
Jonny -
Hi David,
Thanks for that. I think I’ll have to order some of this R-Tape, because I really can’t get on with this other stuff.
Interesting what you say about the tack of the paper though. I’ve a good friend who’s been in the trade for a number of years more than me, he actually took me up and showed me how to successfully apply livery to a Oil Tanker, not often you get one tradesman showing another, but we are both at opposite ends of our little country. Anyway he told me that Medium tack was the best. Can I ask you, do you fidn the Hi-Tack stuff releases ok once its been applied to the surface that it was applied to?
I’ve some of the plastic stuff here, which I use for applying the layers on shadows, etc but I’m not keen on it. Paper what most of my work is done in though.
You say William Smith is the distributor for the R-Tape, do you have contact details for him or where would I find them? EDIT Just seen you posted a website link. Also whats there delivery time like?
Also on the topic of R-tape which version of Hi-tack do you buy David? Or do I just tell them that I want the hi-tack R-tape app. paper?
Sorry for so many questions.
Thanks
Jonny -
Hello,
I’ve been using application tape supplied by Robert Horne Group and haven’t had a problem with it. But they have recently changed the brand and the price has went up too. I got a roll of it but it seems to be of poorer quality than the old stuff I’ve used. It creases a lot easier and doesn’t seem to have the same ‘tack’ even tho they are both medium tack papers.
Can anyone suggested a reasonably priced supplier? I’ve looked at the Metamark stuff which seemed well priced, you get the 1220mm roll slit to whatever sizes you want for no extra.
Anyone got any advise?
Cheers

MemberOctober 12, 2007 at 9:41 am in reply to: Newbie looking for advice on Vinyl CuttersFirstly I’d sort of mimic what John has said about getting a Roland, Graphtec, Summa etc. but if your anything like me when I started out I didn’t have the budget to go all out and purchase one of these brand names straight away.
Although there is one thing I have to disagree with in John’s statement. Getting one of these brand names doesn’t always mean getting quality. I don’t want to upset anybody here but if you have a look inside you’ll probably find some or all of the components are made in China.
I bought my PCut off eBay but I purchased from a recognised seller who offers support to all of his customer with set-up and also any problems with the cutter in general. People need to look around on eBay, look at people’s feedback and also what they offer, if indeed there is after-sales support. I did suffer from a problem with set-up simply because the manual with the cutter wasn’t very clear. But a quick phone call to my supplier and he had me up and running within 5 minutes. His phone line is normal rate too, so you’re not paying anything for the service. 😀 Also I had a problem with the cutter going down on me, but again a quick phone call and the cutter was picked up, repaired and shipped back to me very quickly, I didn’t lose very much time. All the repairs where carried out FOC under the warnetty of the machine.
At the end of the day you’re going to get told different stories by a lot of different people but you just have to try it yourself.

Brian, It’s not for the sizes etc, that would be pointless. I would still measure up the vehicle (even if it was a car etc.) even when I would use a template, just to be sure on the sizes. It’s more so I can roughly show the customer as I’ve a lot of demand for bike stuff.
Not to worry, I’ll hopefully find something.

I have the Suzuki itself, I’m looking for the font to match as I’ve a customer looking for some quite specific.

Just to let you all know. The cutter works fine under Vista.
Ditto that. I’m running with Signblazer Elements. No problems running on Vista. Cutter runs from Com3 port.

Thanks Ian.
I did look at the 700 series and think I’ll be trying it the next time I’m ordering another load of vinyl. Is it much better? I find the 600 series easy to work with, I’ve been doing vehicles with it mainly, seems to work well.

Nice job Rob

Priced this vinyl (Metamark 7 series) earlier today. A lot more expensive than any other vinyl I’ve used or priced. Doesn’t seem to justify the extra money tho.
I’ve had no problems with the Avery but thought I’d try the Metamark stuff as Trimwel (N.Ireland Importers) do pretty good deals on application tape and etch vinyl.
Think I’ll stay with the Avery seems to be as good if not better than the sample of Metamark I have tried.

7 Series is 5 to 8 year.
5 year for metallic
7 year for colour
8 year for white and black. -
Once again may I thank you all for your responses.
I can understand where you are coming from with the influx of cheaper machines. I also agree that it is astonishing to see the number of people able to sell stuff for 99p on eBay. To be honest I can’t even see how they would break even. I put a few things on there test the water type thing. I have more or less stopped any selling on there as it was bringing in not a lot of money and I am better spending my time working on orders for customers locally or the like.
To be honest I could not afford to fork out on a new machine. I did infact look at a Roland cutter second hand but it wasn’t in the best nick and the money was massively high still. I picked to buy the PCut from a dealer who had a lot of good compliments from buyers. He offers major support and can supply the majority of spares for the machine which is good. I’d much rather use the PCut for now, build up my base of contacts, clients etc. and then reward myself with a Roland or the like.
I did go out and buy everything new. I bought a high spec computer, loads of materials etc. I couldn’t afford to have got a lot of material, if any had I spent a fortune on a cutter. Although I will in time, I’m actually already looking at some as I fancy a solvent printer.
I just wanted to clear it up a bit and get some of your views so as I could try and understand further what the agro was. I’m not on here to make enemies or fall out people, after all the majority on here seem to be very friendly, helpful people. I don’t want to sound like a grumpy bugger going on and on. I do understand where you guys are coming from. I guess it will just take a bit of time before I am recognized as being genuine to some members.
Thanks for taking the time to respond and I hope I haven’t upset the apple tart.
Cheers

Thank you for taking the time to respond John.
@ glenn. Yes some people seem to be asking the basic questions. Surely if you where starting out you would ask too? But I’ve been lucky enough that the supplier I bought my machine from offers 9am til 6pm techincal support.

Ah thanks for the speedy reply. Will have a search and give them a phone on monday.
Any other suggestions? I want something with a good life span and at a resonable cost.
Cheers

MemberSeptember 1, 2007 at 1:43 pm in reply to: having backing paper problems with Imageperfect 5700 SeriesHello,
Thanks for the tips. I’ve had to go back to using the Avery stuff as it cuts perfectly. The blade isn’t very old, its cutting the vinyl fine. I was cutting a 2000mm piece and it appeared as if the vinyl slipped in the cutter. It would be the only way to describe it.
The Avery stuff doesn’t cause me a problem but this ImagePerfect vinyl that seems to cause the issue. I don’t have any issues with the quality etc of the ImagePerfect.
