    Hi George,

As far as I’m led to believe, this is a standard chrome that has a separate rose laminate over it but this may have changed.

Pay a valeter to do it lol!

On a side note, we got caught out once and luckily enough was able to talk to the customer as we had 35 to strip and redo but what I learned from that situation was that the bonnet was the worst so now we do the bonnet as a test of time that will need to be committed. It’s not done is wrong so far.

Everything else in the economy goes up so why shouldn’t our suppliers?
In the grand scheme of things as has been said, spread across 50 meters it’s negligible. Without causing offence, if a couple of percent increase causes worry then your probably charging too cheap.

Taking a side step away from the original topic regarding broadcasting prices from suppliers… What’s everyone’s thoughts on metamark having the supply prices readily available on the website? Albeit slightly inflated.

I ask as I had a customer query the cost of his van during the week as he had priced the material and couldn’t justify our price. My outlook is that as much as it may be handy for some people but surely it should be a members only thing or is it really required when we all have a rep/cs agent we deal with?

  • Good write up James. I use to deal with josero for my inks when I was still on solvent and the service was very good. Never had a problem once.

We literally couldn’t go without our flatbed now… As you say it’s a small price compared to other but it’ll soon become one of your most important lol!

I have one of the above companies calling me ALOT of times everyday as we are about to pull the trigger on a few bits of kit but if I’m honest they are pushing that much it’s making me want to hold off till next year and go with a Tekcel alongside your thoughts on one of their products I think I may be right.

Really unusual looking for the circles. Possibly a polymeric vinyl with a monomeric laminate shrinking much faster depending on conditions?

The circles look to be lifting too well and even if that makes sense for it to be a coincidence.

  • Hi James,

We have a Mounters mate 3000×1500 and its served every purpose for us, customer service is great, delivery was very fast and we did shop around a lot.

We went and seen the rolls roller- I was impressed but costly. Roll over, seemed a good machine but didn’t feel solid or something just didn’t seem right. CWT… I was expecting a free car with my quoted price (compressor not included lol) which took me to my Mounters mate, we already bought a roll to roll previously so knew what to expect, Price was spot on, delivery was a few weeks and it’s performed everything brilliantly.

Give them a call mate as they are definetly worth a chat with.

Hi Nick, we have a Mounters mate laminator that we bought a while back and it’s been brilliant. It’s a single hot roller but we only ever use it for 5 mins to take the chill off it if we use in the morning. They are at sign & digital so def stop by and see Omar as he will give you all the details and a demo.

We use to vinyl panels with it before we bought a flatbed applicator, it takes a couple of mins to strip the machine down but always done it well. I’d suggest a feeder/receiver bench if you plan on doing it often. Hope this helps

One thing I’ve noticed is that when tape is applied to cut etch that is of air release type then if it’s not fitted straight away then it can be a bit of a bugger as the air release doesn’t holding the the backing liner very well.

Not sure if this is what was used but just a pointer for future.

R-Tape conform High tack (RTA 470 "I think") always works a treat. We done 300Sqm last month with quite an intricate design all dry. I’ve never done a wet install so couldn’t comment on how good it is wet.

Metamark have sent me a sample roll of applitape high tack today so will report on that later in the week.

It’s not hard at all, labour intensive but charge well as everyone does.

Get yourself a 6 inch triumph scraper, if your lucky the film "may" come off in one piece then use the triumph to scrape Majority of the glue off then a good glue remover or 100% isopropyl to get residue.

The process of sweating the film off does work but it’s long. If you think about the amount of tape and putting it on all the windows plus traveling back and forward that day then it usually works out as a long way for a short cut. The only time we ever sweat film off is on saloon/coupe cars where access is tight to ensure all the glue has gone.

As a rule of thumb, we charge 50% of the install cost for removal so if the new film is £1000 (or would be if it was getting fitted) then removal would be £500.

Definetly normal for the steam when printing block colours and even more so with black. As a side note though, you should have an "in" and "out" extractor fans for the room plus I think the ideal temp for the room is 17-19degrees.

We never managed to get fans put in for the install date and for about a week the place was like Cheech and Chongs car when the Windows go down.

If he hasn’t used a pressure washer or washed it at all for that matter since he fitted them then he certainly hasn’t cleaned/degreased properly. He may have bee "fingering" it a lot to get them straight i.e lifting and sticking back down leaving the oil from his hands behind on the vinyl.

Regardless of if anything was used to help stick it back down, by the time you/he buys this then it probably outweighs the cost of replacement vinyl and for stripes its just not worth it.

My stand on it would be, If you offer a fitting service then he obviously hasn’t wanted to pay for a professional service so may be chancing his arm and where does the replacements stop. If he bought it on eBay or such, would the seller be refunding it- I wouldn’t have thought so. As long as your are positive you handed over a quality product that was suffice for application then incorrect fitting lies with the customer.

Well done for lending yourself to something different 🙂 Not everyone would have took it but these are the kind of jobs you sometimes end up with a little niche market. We don’t some Ford showrooms last year that were changing from the blue, It’s a bugger of a job with handles and alarm sensors etc but compared to replacing the units or painters coming in we can charge good money and still be the better option.

December 23, 2015 at 10:16 pm in reply to: Hot v Cold laminating

Hi Nick, We’ve been using a mounters mate laminator now for around a year or their abouts (its been a fast year) and its great. We shopped around a little and it came in cheaper than the Easymount cold except has the benefit of a single hot roller… Admittedly we don’t use it hot apart from maybe putting it up to 10’c before laminating to take the "chill" out of it.

I think its run of the mill to get silvering with cold PS lams but as has been said this goes away within 24 hours and if you have a little time and the customer is fussy then once its mounted to the board put the heater on the roller on and pass through a few times and it helps get rid of half the silvering almost straight away.

One thing i really like about the MM laminator was that the spindles have rulers up them so when setting the machine up you pick a number and through the 3 spindles if its matching up then generally it’ll always run true. its a little thing but very useful. hope this helps

June 20, 2015 at 6:25 pm in reply to: The Downsides of KPMF Cheaper Vinyl.

I wouldn’t worry about the paint being pulled off of taxis, I know the wrap market with these taxis relatively well and most of them have all had more hits than the Beatles and it’s always a quick fix to get them out the door.

Courses are a good suggestion and also high probability they would actually be cheaper for you if you account for your actual time teaching and supplying the materials.

KPMF isn’t a bad vinyl, like everything else in the market it serves a purpose and does get used on the Hackney taxis a lot as they don’t really have any recesses so the vinyl stands up not too bad.

If your keen to teach the guys yourself I’d buy a range of types of vinyl and obviously use the cheapest to teach the bare essentials and progress to the more expensive to get a better feel for techniques and usability.

One thing I would mention and I mean this in the best possible way as you may be one of the best wrappers out their… If you teach them then you will have a workshop full of your bad habits (we all have them) but more importantly, think of the skills they may come back from a course with that you don’t know that could increase production and justify the course cost.

  • I’d have to echo everything Nick has said, were about 3 month in with ours now and it’s been faultless. As with everything you wanna buy an after service, I don’t think I’ve had to call Omar with a problem but we’ve spoke a few times and little things that niggle me I’ve asked him and he’s been spot on with them.

Can’t receend the company or machine enough.

Not loads to go on but i had a 64s for roughly a year before upgrading to a latex a few months ago… the only reason i upgraded was due to the nature of the stuff we do the latex was a huge benefit.

One thing id say about the seiko is they pretty much do what they say on the tin and its very user friendly, we ran it on triangle inks and were happy with the results. If I’m right, i think HP use to use the seiko brand to test the market with new printers before allowing it to bring down the HP brand should it fail i.e. the HP9000 was the 1st/2nd generation 64s seikos rebranded.

I don’t know anything about aircrafts but almost every race style motorbike has the brand on the petrol tank and then it’s lacquered over so I don’t see why it would be any different on a plane to cause problems.

Are the panels bonded on opposed to screwed on? if not why not take them down and back to the workshop?

I’d personally replace them as id hate the previous stuff underneath to make my job look bad but its understandable to cost efficient.
Things like Hexis/KPMF may be ok to get on but you might need to spend a bit of time with the heat gun to help the bond or a spray adhesive promotor but I’m not sure if that’d counteract the air release.

It’s not cheap but 3M do a vinyl (envision 480, I think its air release) and its suited for cold applications. William smith stock it and possibly have it on the website.

Have to agree with what David said, were currently with axa and the service was tremendous but the had a big reshuffle due to some large outstanding quotes and I presume I will have to shop about.
With window tinting part of our business we always hit 2 big hurdles… When’s car leaves if we are taking it back to a customer it is then a modified car and the other is that not many insurance companies are keen on working around electrics in a car with water.

One thing to note is that if you contact an insurance company direct then a broker contact them on your behalf they will not quote to the broker as they have you tied now.

    quote Brian Bollard:

I just bought one a couple of weeks ago – they had a discount offer here so I took advantage of that.
We already had 2 x 25500s and the 360 seems to have most of the issues fixed.
The 360 has an onboard i1 so you create custom profiles in about 30 minutes.
It’s faster – startup and printing.
The takeup reel is industrial quality now unlike the older flimsy version.
It can run vinyl at 6 and 8 pass whereas the older ones were only good at 10 pass.
It doesn’t heat up the media as much as the older versions so should be able to print on things that couldn’t cope before.
I’m still experimenting with media so don’t know exactly what works well yet.
I haven’t been able to get an uncoated paper to print well for some reason.. the 25500s print on that kind of cheap paper well so it’s a good thing I kept my older printers.

Thanks Brian, i seem to have some of the companies i contacted last week coming back to me today and tbh I’m quite happy with the prices to go for it before S&D. Just wish i could get a bit more for my current print without venturing into the messages of ebay for how cheap will i let it go for lol.

Resurrecting an old post, what’s everyone’s thoughts on discounts on these at S&D next month? We’re interested in upgrading to a 330 if not a 360 but if the discounts are gonna be little due popularity then we’ll just buy before.

That being said, we contacted 3/4 companies last week and it seems nobody is actually interested in selling apart from one which offered no discount on the RRP or any sweeteners to go with them.

I have to say, doing a partial wrap on the rear is one of the most beneficial things that can be done if on a budget as that’s the best advertising space.
Weighing up a rear section printed wrap to a full wrap is a huge difference and helps get the one man bad tradesmen away from cut vinyl only.

    Just my opinion.
