Help sourcing vinyl with easy apply, but not wrapping vinyl?
Posted by Tim de Beir on February 25, 2015 at 10:43 amSituation:
Have a confirmed project for approx. 70 sqm. fullcolour printed artwork to b,e applied on existing fullcolour printed vinyl with matte laminate.
Originally the layout was fullcolour but in the end it is only black background with white lettering – so now I am looking for a vinyl but with easy apply technology.
Do not want to laminate for example a Oracal 751 with application tape – printed fullcolour with laminate applies 10times faster…
There are 2 reasons why not looking into wrapfilm:
1. application temperature: project is within 2 weeks so temperature will be 7-10 degrees (I hope so)
2. price (off course) 🙂Is there any (polymeric or cast) vinyl with easy apply technoloqy but no carwrap vinyl out there?

You could use Metamark MD5A, or 3M 40 series with comply. Both are polymeric printable with air release.

Hi Jamie, I am looking for a coloured matte black vinyl – I don’t like printing 70 sqm black, and have a chance that there is a little difference between first print and latest printed colour black…
-
Ah, sorry, my mistake. I don’t know of any coloured air release.
-
for the likes of this we just laminate a Ordinary Vinyl over Metamark MD3 or MD5 Metascape, works a treat and leaves it a pinch to apply as it thick also
-
use car colour changing film hexis do matt black with air release, most matt normal films are low grade ie monomeric, I wouldn’t go down the route of over laminating film with matt unless there both the same grade, they will shrink at different rates, you could find a printable air release film and over laminate it will matt coloured film, you would still have to use both calendar films, then you have the time in laminating them together and 2 films.

@ gary and what about application temperature, it’s nearly 8-10 degrees, should be at least 18 degrees says technical data sheet…
-
I think you will be fine I install graphics in them temperatures all the time,
-
@ gary: wrapfilm is not a regular vinyl and does need a certain temperature for a good adhesion onto surface… Anyone here that has worked in these conditions?
-
What are you sticking it to, we did some 45ft trailers outside using a Arlon black gloss film air release they were full of rivets it worked fine temperature was between 5-10 degrees, yes at first they didn’t stick to well but after being left over night on the vehicle they where fine, some vinyls need 24 hrs to get a better bond, I’ll try and find a photo of them, the only problem we had was it was cut letter so the application tape struggled sticking to the backing sheet between the letter because it was air release

yes i see your problem, is there composite panels on there already ?
-
yep indeed already dibond panels mounted from previous owner… he got it sponsored by boss paints (paints brand) and now it will be horse equiment…
-
It’s not cheap but 3M do a vinyl (envision 480, I think its air release) and its suited for cold applications. William smith stock it and possibly have it on the website.
-
it might be cheaper to replace the panels with new matt ones, panels might not be much cheaper but it might be quicker to install them than messing with all the graphics, if you in doubt about the vinyl sticking, might be worth getting a sample and sticking a small section to the existing panels and see if bonds ok
-
hmmm panels are much more expensive than just replacing the fullcolour artwork.
I’ll mount these stickers by myself in about 8 hours work – new panels and prints on it will be price by 300-400% more expensive! -
@ david, the envision is print film, I prefer no to print the black, because of the fact with colour differences…
FYI: one side view is: 16 metres by 2,2 metres high – there’s another side that has to been done also. It’s very difficult printing this without any any colourchange…

Are the panels bonded on opposed to screwed on? if not why not take them down and back to the workshop?
I’d personally replace them as id hate the previous stuff underneath to make my job look bad but its understandable to cost efficient.
Things like Hexis/KPMF may be ok to get on but you might need to spend a bit of time with the heat gun to help the bond or a spray adhesive promotor but I’m not sure if that’d counteract the air release. -
I’d suggest the KPMF Air Release stuff – yes it is wrap but application guide says it’s fine from 8C. It’s cheap and real easy to work with for flood coating large areas, perfect for what you need! (not so good for wrapping complex car parts, I stick to Avery Supreme for that). Just make sure to post heat the edges.
Cheers
