"im guessing" you mean wrapping panels, text etc over a recess?
That’s NOT a trend, it is most likely…

The sign company is unable to wrap properly and/or knowledge of using the correct media is limited.
The sign company is offering a budget solution to crossing a recess without buying the proper media.

I have to say, doing a partial wrap on the rear is one of the most beneficial things that can be done if on a budget as that’s the best advertising space.
Weighing up a rear section printed wrap to a full wrap is a huge difference and helps get the one man bad tradesmen away from cut vinyl only.

Just my opinion.
