We have done quite a few of these and there is no set way of doing them, weve used glass with vinyls on the reverse, frosted glass with vinyl on the front, cast acrylic flame polised edges vinyls on reverse cut acrylic or brass letters mounted on the front.
Reverse engraved with vinyl on the front, the list just goes on and on it depends more on the design or effect you tfying to get

our brass, s/s and ali are sorted and sold to scrap mechants, the acrylics are more of a problem, larger pieces left over from routing we find the local schools will come and collect.
fomex being the main problem no one wants it so that goes in the bin.
The council have just started a scheme for households to recycle paper of which we borrowed a bin which we take to the nearest house every week (dont tell the council)

thanks for the advice the problem was more to do with the room available for the lighting. It was going to have to be mounted between a double elipse, changed the design slightly, now have the room to look at fluorescent.

Hi weve done this sort of thing in corian before, but it is pricey, also made moulds in reverse and had them cast in concrete, if these ideas appeal, get back to me and we could work something out.
