not sure if this is a daft question.. but here goes.

we fill on average 40+ bin bags of “mostly” paper a week.
countless offcuts of metals and plastics. saw dust etc etc etc..
our dump is about a 9 mile drive and can somtimes take two loads, a full sprinter van then half of one.

this takes time and costs us about £20-£30 a week on dumping charge, and all to get rid of rubbish! 😮

what do you use as a method of waste disposal?

we tried burning it in a large metal bit but we got told off by council! 🙄

Hi robert , what you could do is scrap the metal offcuts for cash and donate the plastic offcuts to local schools technical departments most of whom would collect as for the paper i think you could continue to burn

We have a large council “Wheelie” bin that gets emptied twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays). For this we pay an annual service charge (on top of our business rates) of over 100 pounds (I can’t remember the exact figure).

In addition about once every two or three months I fill the van with larger pices of rubbish that collects in the unit (old signs – plastic off cuts Aluminium etc). This costs 17.50 pounds a time to dump at the local council tip (Land fill charge – maximum load 10 tons) whereas 5 years ago it used to be free.

Cardboard is collected for recycling free by the council. We phone them about once a month to collect the cardboard we have accumalated in that time.

The trouble with bin bags is volume. You can’t compress the paper very much before the bag splits.

We use the 1100 litre wheely bin, from the local council but any waste company will rent you one. Just shop around for the best deal.

The beauty of these is that you keep putting rubbish in and when the bin is full you put the apprentice in and get him to jump up and down. If you have a choice of apprentice, use the heavier one. You then carry on putting more rubbish in.

We have two bins, they cost £65 per quarter each, and are emptied once a week. I dread to think what disposal is costing you what with labour, vehicle running costs plus whatever the local tip charges you.

Added on edit: The good vinyl offcuts go to a couple of local primary schools.

We don’t have an apprentice – and as I’m the heaviest, I’m the one that gets to climb in and do the jumping 😕

I do the same as john, It’s easier for me than you obviously because of volume for me is less. Window tinting does generate a heck of a lot of waste. I just rent another wheelie bin from the council $120.00 extra per year on my rates, emptied once a week. The council also give us a wheelie for recycling material that gets picked up once a fortnight. For some uncanny reason, mine seems to clank more thatn rustle…Figure that one out.

    hi chris
the offcuts are normaly long and very thin sheers or virtualy nothing from cutting with the cnc router. so giving away i dont see a help to anyone.. lol who knows though..

scrap value.. well thats why im actualy making this post.
i thought, ok we have a sealed off yard at the back of our place. spiked metal fencing 6 foot and barbed wire…
i have in the last month or so. collected various alloy sign panels. steel signs, sheet metal etc all in seperate piles for scrapping once i have plenty to do in a couple of van loads.
anyway.. last week i heard a noise after hours and went out the back to find some clown with his eyes popping out his head half way over the fence, with drool dripping out his mouth as he was caught and couldnt get back over the fence.
as i went to grab him his mate yanked him back over his side and off they went. as far as i could see they had dragged the alloy up next to that side of the yard. to pinch for scrap.
then the other day i went out and guess what?
someone had looped a chain round 4 parts of the fence.. the other end round “im told” a van tw bar and drove off… pulling that part of the fence spikes away.. in they came and almost cleaned the yard out…
a car spotted them and drove in.. out the van went leaving everything all over the place and never seen again..

all for the build up of scrap metals! so once i get rid of this lot ill give that a miss… 😆 😆

We live in the country……and fly tip….only joking 😉

When i worked for a firm in london, they used to have someone come in and collect all the scrap.
The perspex was sorted into light and dark colours, as was the metal…Also when the fitters took down a job they took the aluminium to the scrap yard and pocketed the cash?
Not sure if there are people still taking perspex or not

We try & recycle as much as we can 😀 such as paper, plastic & cardboard, we dont have much of a problem with metals. The remainder of our rubbish such as general waste we usually take a trip down the local tip once a week, which is just round the corner.

If you look in the yellow pages & look under recycling companies most will happily come & take what they can from you.

our brass, s/s and ali are sorted and sold to scrap mechants, the acrylics are more of a problem, larger pieces left over from routing we find the local schools will come and collect.
fomex being the main problem no one wants it so that goes in the bin.
The council have just started a scheme for households to recycle paper of which we borrowed a bin which we take to the nearest house every week (dont tell the council)

Skips are a great idea but unless you can lock them away behind gates you’ll find every monday morning you have a nice colletion of old sofas washing machines and in one case a citroen car!!!! how the hell they got it in i don’t know

We used to have a local company taking scrap acrylic, he would deliver a skip and when full he would exchange it. It didnt cost anything, only saved us time & space. as for the metal another company should supply you with two skips one for ferrous & the other for non-ferrous, these can be locked. And you will be paid scrap value less costs. the benefit of this is that it tidies your yard and look somewhat organised…Also for Paper we have local paper recyling companies again suppling skips…You need to check you local area for suppliers or talk to you council regarding recyling companies…

    I hope this helps…

We’re with the big (1100 ltr) wheelie bin brigade, but our thieving b***** charge us £96 + vat per quarter for weekly service 😕

It has been suggested that Hales waste will do the same for £55 or so but until we get on the 50+ vehicles we just quoted for the council …… I’m saying nothing jack 😆 😆
