    Hi Adam

I had a similar problem the other week, trying to print direct from a customers file, they had specified a spot colour which was from the international marine paint colour chart!

I had to reopen in illustrator, convert all colours to cmyk and then i saved the file as a very high resolution jpeg which was the only way i could get the file to print, it too had some gradients in it.

I also run jv3 with shiraz, hope this helps.

We wanted to laminate to give extra protection, the boards get packed away in a store outbuilding and are reused for future tournaments.

The boards are all prints on self adhesive, mounted to correx and then matt laminated, to ensure no glare from the tv cameras.

As usual with our line of work, artwork was the problem, getting it agreed from the different sponsor companies, giving us just over a week to produce prints and panels.

We had a hard job sourcing some striping as well, eventually found a company exactly what you’re after.

    4" Blue/white stripe with 1" or 2" squares.

Thanks for all the suggestions, sorted now!!

The sensor that points down onto the media had shifted slightly, just enough not to register the media.

Its always something simple that you don’t check first!!

    Hi Lynn

    No sunlight coming through.

It had been working fine all day, I changed the media and started to get problems.

It weird because the head slows down to a near standstill as it runs over the media on the way back to the station but its in a different place each time I retry!

same as my manual, no error 52!! It comes up with "error 52 media set".

When you first measure the material, the head is going all the way over to the left hand side of the printer(as it usually does) and then comes back, as it hits the media it slows down and then doesn’t seem to be able to detect the media.

I have tried different media widths and it also seems to slow down at different points across the media.

Thanks for that Andrew. Will have to try that one.

We havnt used any of the products from Europoint, do they do any sample rolls do you know?

We havnt been pushing exhibition panels due to the problem with getting a decent colour which is a shame when you have a printer capable of doing the job! Just dont like sending work out that we are not happy with!

Do you use europoint for all your digital media? What do you mainly use your JV3 for?

is there anyone with a JV3 using it for mainly exhibition pop-ups and being happy with the results, if so what material?

We printed some panels for a customer a while ago who commented on the colours being very dull compared with the same job from another printer.

What the best printer for producing good prints for pop-up/banner stands??

The material used is a hexis vinyl and was printed on normal settings, we were very pleased with how solid the print came out too, like you Shane we have never laid printed clear onto a silver van!

Space for the JV3 is one of the main reasons for moving, new premises nearly twice the size of existing unit. At the moment we dont use the full width as much as we would like.

We’ve been in the unit where we are for 15 years so plenty of junk, trying to clear out at the minute.

Not looking forward to moving the 2.5m JV3, we have to have 2 engineers to drain it first, then get it moved but it least it should get a good clean out!

We also have a heavy guillotine and the screen print hand benches, everything else not too much of a problem, its just the time at the moment to get it done.

Anyway new year, new start, more space to use the JV3 to its full extent, hopefully not tripping over each others feet any more!

We have had the printer for two years come this November, we renewed contract with AIT last year.

We have had the black head replaced under the warranty agreement already and have always found them to be helpful and quick to come out if you get any problems.

We have been very pleased with the printer and are beginning to explore new media to use.

We find mounting prints much better as well and have a customer who had prints done direct to correx elsewhere but has now changed back to self adhesive prints mounted to correx due to better quality.

Have you used your JV3 to print rigid board??

We have a 2.5m JV3 with the additional heater added but have never run any rigid board through.

We print mainly banners and self adhesive and do not have any problems with fumes but are used to screen printing smells!!

We deal with A&P Display part of Cox/Robert Horne etc

We get an excellent service from them, ok they are virtually on the doorstep for us but will always go out of their way to help, we can collect from them and get two deliveries a day if we’re desperate for something.

For example, today i ordered 10metres of vinyl at just after 11.00am, it was delivered by 1pm.

No delivery charges and quick service – its hard for other suppliers to compete when you have a major supplier in the same town!

    Hi there

We run avery easy apply through our JV3, and then over laminate with a sericol varnish.

We have battled the price with A&P and still pay about £650 for 1370mm x 50metre roll.

We were quoted on two 1005 vinyls, one much cheaper than this price, I think there is a 1005 without the easy apply which is much cheaper but i will have to check the details at work.

‘Sema4’ – one of my guys went on the avery course, found it really helpful.

The only trouble if you use a white static cling for applying to the inside of the window is you lose the amount of area you have to cling to the window as it is reduced where the print is. At least with clear, printed in reverse with a white back up is you still have the full amount of the back of the cling for applying to the window.

We had some larger sheets of cling from A&P Display, I think the size was 1.5metre x 1metre.

    Hi there

Its an over varnish that is used for screen printing, it is what avery recommend to use when applying over irregular surfaces as it does not affect the conformability of the vinyl.

We sprayed the varnish on but it is usually applied using screen print process.

    Hi all

Its our first wrap so cant compare the easy apply with anything else but the guys who are fitting reckon its easy to use.

The sides of the van will be done in 4 sections ie the front wing/door/2 panels to the back of the sides, the easy apply is 1370 wide so the main panels are about 1300 high by i think about 950 wide and took about 1hour per panel to fit but thats probably not working continually.

Hopefully will get the van completed shortly and will post the end result!!

Rodney – What amazes me is the amount of suppliers who we have never had any dealings with that find out you have a larger printer and who would not have dealt with you when our business was classed as a smaller operation.
I have had more reps in to see me at work in the last 6 months than probably in the last 2/3 years.

Like you say handling the media is a bit of a pain, the banner roll at 2.5metre wide is 65metres in length and very weighty, with two people its still a struggle!

Not as much fun as we had when the printer was installed, five people and still hard work!!

Luckily the printer is keeping busy and thats without too much promoting.

Robert – What banner material are you currently using, what about self adhesive?

As promised some vans we have done, again all layouts supplied by customer.

    Robert

The profiles are a little limited for the 2.5m as they need to be different from the 1.6m (about twice as many for the 1.6metre). Its not too bad for us as we are only using avery vinyl which is all profiled correctly.

As for the width, alot of our work is banner, and for one of our customers that we supply to it was this width or no work from him as his banners vary from 572mm wide up to 2.4metre wide by various lengths. We dont tend to use the full width a great deal but find that we can usually repeat multiple copies across the width or rotate narrow prints to come out of the width. We currently use vinyl at 2metres wide so can normally get many copies out to utilise the material.

A print and cut would be useful but as you see we really had to go for this bigger width to gain alot of banner work, luckily my staff are good at hand cutting!!

We are using vuflex banner material at the minute but have been sent samples from Lows of Dundee, Flex Europa, A&P Display and more recently had chats with Hexis,Oce Graphics and Pyramid. Its surprising how suppliers suddenly seem to know that you have a digital printer and come knocking at the door!!

We are currently wrapping our own van in between work at the moment so I will post some pics of the progress so far as well as some customer vans we have done. We are lucky that we dont tend to get too involved in the design side of the work so most jobs come artwork ready.

Avery easy apply can be over varnished with a sericol varnish.

The vinyl is supposed to be very good for vehicle wraps due to its conformability but as ‘dollar bill’ states is costly.

It was shown being applied as a wrap with very good results on the avery course for printed media and alongside the 900 supercast vinyl for flat colours.

Do you use a laminate over the easy apply, if so what do you use?

We’ve got a roll of it to do our own van with, just need some spare time!

Am I right that you’ve got a JV3, do you use mainly avery vinyl?

I dont think the gloves at Cherwells are the avery ones, I think they are too cheap, just sold as suitable for handling digital prints but maybe wrong.

Yes its a high strength tape suitable for correx, we use it to bond estate agent panels together, its about 19mm wide by about 1mm thick and we get a 20m roll from GPM in Leicester.

Hope the instructions for making the correx hinges made a little sense!!

Like Robert says, this is the material to use, HIPs (High Impact Polystyrene) is the way to go. The one I mentioned Huntsman is A&P’s brand name but you can probably get similar from other suppliers.

    A&P stock 1mm in sheet sizes of 610mm x 915mm or 1372mm x 660mm.
There is a northwest branch in Manchester or a West Midlands branch in Birmingham.

    Hi Martin

We have done some correx a-boards for a sports arena that had to be packed flat. We made the hinges out of correx, cutting into the flutes to just leave one side of the material attached, then we used a correx bonding tape to apply the correx hinge to the top of the back and front panels to make the a-board.

We then used further correx to make a foldable hinge to put down the side of the a-boards to keep the two panels together but allowing the a-board to be folded together for packing, this hinge is what holds the a-board apart.

    Hope this makes sense

    Hi Paddy

We do quite a lot of safety signs, obviously for the higher quantities we have to screen print them to be cost effective.

We normally use huntsman high impact polystyrene which is a matt/gloss finish for 1mm or 1.5mm thick signs or we have also used pentawhite calendered rigid PVC sheet which comes slightly thinner than 1mm thick and costs a bit more.

These both come in various sheet sizes and we get ours from A&P Display (part of Robert Horne Group) in Northampton. There are other branches in the country.

If you need any quotes for screenprinting quantity runs we would be happy to help.

Sorry, havnt got a mimaki plotter so cant comment on them.

As far as the ink goes on the JV3, we were told 3 year life.

We’ve been using our printer primarily for banner prints and have encountered no problems. You need to leave the prints ideally for at least 24hours to fully cure, although as signage is usually the last things customers think of, is not always easy.

    Hi Dave

We’ve had our jv3 since the end of november and are pleased with it so far, on the work we have produced.

This is our first experience with digital work but all feedback from customers is positive.

Whats your interest, do you run one?

    Thanks for the repiles.

The suregrave machines look just the same as the ones from Jag, I’ll check how the price compares and give presco a ring.

My customer deals in safety signs and is looking for holes and radius similar to the ones on the standard signs from the big safety stockists, so the size will probably vary to the size of the sign. Also the quantity we do for them can be anything upwards of 1off.

    Thanks

    Hi Stephen

We’re running our JV3 with the shiraz rip. We had a number of profiles included but as you can imagine never for the media you want to use.

We have been told that a lot of new profiles are being worked on presently so hopefully we will have a better selection of media soon.

We have done a lot of work already on the printer and we are learning as we go along, as I said earlier in the postings we only had a PC60 previously so are new to large format digital printing.

    Regards

    Hi Rod

Thanks for enquiring about our JV3, things are going well at the moment, we have a customer who is hoping to give us plenty of work, we have already done some jobs for him which have been produced with no problems.

The christmas break has not helped, we’re trying to get samples done and get profiles and material pricing from suppliers sorted at the minute as well as getting work out.

    Hi Stephen

You had to get 6 people to carry the printer in, imagine the weight then of the 2.5metre printer!!

We’re new to the digital market and I dont know who else is running a JV3, I think there is a couple of members with the 1.6metre wide but I’m not sure if anyone else has a 2.5metre printer.

Maybe we can exchange tips once our printers have been running a bit longer.

    Hi Robert

Yep it sure is a large machine, especially after only having a pc60!!! Its certainly a big step up for us.

The quality is very good and the printer is quite straight forward to work.

We’ve had a lot of interest from all our customers so hopefully its all going in the right direction.

By the way is there anyone else on this site running a 2.5metre mimaki?

    Hi all

We use Print one for spot colours for our PC60, they also stock for gerber edge.
It is an exchange service, you send used cartridges back to them to keep the prices down.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

The signs will be up for a couple of days, and we are looking at quoting for about 180 off, all different. The spec given was just lightweight but smart.

They have seen some correx signs we produced already, we were thinking of possibly going this route and creasing the correx to attach to the top of the table with self adhesive or velcro.

Thanks for the links. We already use Magic Touch and also Xpres for heat applied material.

I wondered what general thoughts were on if sublimation is a worthwhile process to get involved with and if it is very profitable, we already have the heat press so advice on what is the best printer would be great.
