MemberFebruary 1, 2006 at 12:04 pm in reply to: does anyone have any info on applying gold leaf to glass?Marcella
Stencil method? Cut & reverse weed paintmask stencil film. Roller with a gloss paint / enamel and leave for an hour before removing the stencil. After another hour and a half when paint is tacky (not coming off on yer mits) apply the gold leaf by rubbing lightly across the back of the sheets. Leave this alone until paint is totally dry then buff the gold leaf up with cotton wool. This will also remove any bits and pieces of leaf that hang over the edge of the paint. Try and do a test area 1st to ensure the paint sticks to the glass!

I used a material called ‘Artex’ which i printed on a 3.5m Vutek. Not to sure if you can get it for smaller machines. Call Scanachrome and ask for a sample then try and match it with something similiar.

If your worried the chavs may steal the lettering – pump the locaters with some Araldite or other top notch glue stuff. They’ll probably cut their grubby little mitts on the edges of the lettering trying to get them off.

Nothing wrong in asking what people think about a design. What Andrew did was a bloody decent thing coming up with a design that i can draw inspiration from and probably never use. Sorry Mr Williams!

Many thanks for all the support guys!!! I can’t say for legal reasons what i’ll be doing in the new year yet (watch this space), hopefully a bit of travelling, i may go back to Australia and see some freinds, Shane send me a mail & let me know where you are!!! after that who knows??? Me!!!. I CAN understand the position of the employer as outlined in previous posts but like i say i had/still have NO intention of upsetting the balance, i’ve been in the game too long to be going around causing grief because 9 times out of ten it comes back to haunt you. Alan, i might take you up on that offer of a cup of coffee i’ve still got your number & will get in contact in the new year.
Many thanks for the meassages of support – it REALLY helps.
Thanks

Carrie, Really pissed off now, Just got back from the pub & found that i’ver been bounced off another job. Can things get any worse??? Probably i expect but you sort of have to expect these knock backs, right???
A still pissed off Kev.

I think the best solution would be to start with the correct substrate itself. Using 5mm Foamex at this size in this way is always going to create problems & that’s not taking into account of the Foamex going brittle in a couple of years. I’d use Dibond/Reynabond for this type of sign with a plate over the join on the back. Even rebated Acrylic with panel locks to reverse would be a simpler solution.

Could be a couple of things. To much pressure from the top roller. To much tension on the laminate. Release take-up to fast.

Hi Kate
Fix a length of Aluminium angle to the wall to support the top edge of the tray. Measure down the height of the sign and fix another one less 3mm to compensate for the thickness of the Dibond (assuming that it is 3mm). Screw through the Dibond & into the angle for fixing using self drilling cladding screws.

Sounds like you should budget for a cherrypicker if the signs are that high. There’s nothing like climbing a triple extended ladder with an 8 x 4′ under 1 arm and it’s bouncing around like no tomorrow. I tried it once **** that, never again!

I don’t think you’ll have much luck with the colour. You could buy in red fx and re coat it. Have you tried Amari plastics??? 01268 88 4444 or Cox’s 020 7232 4919
Kev

In my experience the answer is no. I have used mainly Postershop (onyx) & Wisp and have found that if you use the rip to colour balance, it creates a knock on effect. Like if your trying to match a certain blue for instance, if there’s a red within the image you can guarantee that it’s gonna come out orange, purple or even brown. If you try and correct it in Photoshop you can leave tracemarks of the previous colour around your objects and it looks s**t. If it’s a full colour background (which i leave well alone) with text & logo i output from Illustrator after a bit of tweaking colours from a Pantone comparison chart which Stephen mentions. Tell your client that you cannot guarantee a decent colour match from the artwork supplied and offer some test prints to choose from. Get the client to sign one off and away you go – your covered.

MemberSeptember 6, 2005 at 8:04 pm in reply to: Got a Bouncer – returned chq – what next?Speak to who ordered the signage/job first. They may be able to point you in the right direction of whom to speak to about the situation. If it’s a one man band and he’s trying to avoid you. Write a letter (i always find that if you send a hardcopy registered post they cannot say that they havn’t received an e-mail) telling them that the cheque has been returned unpaid. State your terms of payment whether it be 30 / 60 days. Explain YOUR position and that the job was finished to a high standard and that ANY costs incurred WILL be passed on directly to the client. If the situation continues without payment, mention the small claims court in another letter along the same lines. This usually does the trick, no-one wants a CCJ / mark against their name.
Failing this i normally send the boys round!!! Only joking!!! 😀
Hope you get paid mate, you may be in for a long wait though.

MemberSeptember 5, 2005 at 7:45 pm in reply to: can i use two different types of vinyl for layering?many, many scenarios – i use vinyl in the events industry (loads of company logo’s) and they don’t care how much it costs as long as it matches their corporate guidelines & the colour is correct for job in hand. I mean that you can have a logo on a exhibition stand where the punter/client is 5ft away and the colours need to be SPOT ON. Where as if your doing an aerial display or something similiar you can have a bit of artistic licence (using different grades of vinyls) because the eye cannot recognise accurate true colour at distance. I use some really expensive vinyl’s for a 2 day show & cheap materials when needed. IF you can get in with the bluechip company’s on exhibitions etc you will find exactly the same. As long as their company profile is being projected (with your help) in the right direction cost should be no issue.
Sorry if i’ve gone off on a tangent, blame Mr Kronenbourg 1664!

Tony, You really do NOT want to use Kappa board outside. It swells up like a sponge. Basically what it is, is a foam centered ali/tin coated cardboard. Horrible stuff to work with – as i comes out the laminater you have to earth yourself every time coz you get big blue sparks flying at your knife. I used to shock me mate Mikey every time – we’re not so good mates now. 😀 Only joking. The only good thing about it is that it’s lightweight. Seriously for outdoor use go for a rigid PVC. There’s load’s of cheap (& very expensive) ones to choose from, contact your local supplier for more info on the PVC’s available.
