coreldraw/illustrator – character sizing?
Posted by Alan Wharton on September 3, 2005 at 3:35 pmWhen using the above software is there a way of setting the size of characters to inches instead of the default pts size. ?
Whenever i use this i have to just use pt 48 or similar then drag it to size, im sure i read somewhere there is a setting so you can change this so its in inches !🙄

there is.. or you could type “5 inches” in that measurement box
-
just tried that and it comes up with Invalid number carnt reset font size 🙁
This is on corel draw 8 and 12 btw -
In Corel 12:
Tools – Options – Text – Default Text Units
EDIT: I see what you mean, even when changed to inches in the settings, it still shows points on screen. Strange.

mmmmm, just done that Andy iv set to inches and restarted the app n its still set to pt pfft, gunna try and reboot pc and see if that resets it. 👿

yeah.. i did a quick rash answer thinking it would, always resized by eye personally.
However I just used Transformations/Size and turned off “Non-proportional” and that works.
However I prefer text to be in points as it just something I know, I measure everything else in mm.

sod it, it doesnt want to change so il leave as is and drag to size 😕

i think that the point size is the X height the drag size is total height inc descenders etc. but remember that the length is from the letter node not the side of the letter

In coral draw, you can either draw a box round it and then resize the whole lot, or click on the general (arrow) tool and then right click the text and convert it to curves. This then gives you the option to resize.

In CorelDraw you can select the text with the pointer tool and use the Transformation dialog box (Object>Transformation>Size) to re-size the text in inches. Just make sure you are using Artistic Text.
In Illustrator if you size using the transform box it will size the bounding box and not the type. I think the only around is to Covert to Outlines and then enter the size in the dialog box. Then the size will represent the top of the ascenders to the bottom of the descenders.
Great thing about Illustrator is you can mix units. Just type in 3 in for inches use mm for millimeters etc. You can even do math right in the transform box, a feature I use a lot. So if you need to divide a 17 in box in thirds you could just type in 17 in / 3 and it does the math for you. You can use +, – , * ,/ in any of the transformation boxes.

Thanks for the input chaps :lol1:
Managed to change it as you have said, but im sure i read in the forums somewhere you could change a setting somewhere that changes the drop down font size to inches instead of th pt as default, if i find it il let you know 😉 -
In Corel 12, when you select tools, options, text, default text units and set to inches, even though it stays as points at the top, the inches are displayed in the bottom left hand corner.

In Illustrator you change the units of measurement in the preferences. Goto > edit > preferences > units & undo. Here you can change the general measurements, stroke & type units from pt’s/picas/inches/mm’s/cm’s & pixels. Kev
