    Hi Dave,

mmmm the way i used to do it if i had say another make of kit that i wanted to scan is to draw a line or more across the item you want to scan
Import the scanned images into Corel and line up the sections you have scanned with the reference lines you made. Once done draw round it with the Beizer tool and hey presto you have the shape you require. Or go visit an architects office who may have a large format scanner.

    Hi
Yes Johnny i edge my graphics, same as Danger, here is a extract from graphic marking systems website Dewi, it might answer your question.

    quote :

Use with the GERBER EDGE®, Roland PC 60 & 600, SPARK 1612 and other thermal transfer printers. Solvent ink based printers tested include Roland, Mimaki and Arizona.

Here is the exact price of the Convex material from Sign and Digital in Ireland.

    1 x roll Convex 6mil clear 15″x45.72mt £140.70
    1 x roll Convex 8mil Laminate 13″x 45.72mt £120.60
    Delivery £30.82

    Total price £292.12

When making the graphics you must laminate them to protect them so price per meter of vinyl and laminate £3.19 (without print cost’s)

No way would i sell them to cheap, i ain’t in the game of undercutting people to get work, I have ridden a motocross bike most of my life, and have subsequently purchased “graphic kit’s”, i now make them, I know what they cost !

Thats exactly how i used to do them, I agree, Danger Uk do some great stuff and i used to use their graphics myself for my bike. I along with a few others would just like to know what material they are using.

I see you are in their neck of the woods fancy paying them a visit on our behalf ?l 😉

There is another company called the “the stickerman” he uses the same stuff as Danger UK but again it seems as if they wanna keep what material they use to themselves.

N-style are a company in the states who produce the same motocross decals and their decals are on a brown release paper marked with “SCOTCH 3m High Performance” again have tried to find this adhesive to laminate to thicker non adhesive vinyl but to no avail, and 3m wont answer your e-mails.

If you put normal vinyl onto low surface energy plastics ie motocross bikes it will not last, the first time its jet washed after a race meeting they WILL come off.

    Hi,
I work from home too, started in a spare bedroom but outgrew it rapidly! Now in a converted garage only problem is a tin roof (its bloody hot)
Looked into premises when there was a chance of redundancy at my “other” job but the oveheads are horrendous and decided to stick it out at home.
No problem with the neigbours either and i get to name and number all the local kids football shirts!

    Hi,
A portfolio is an advantage but not neccessary. As you start to complete jobs for your new customers just keep a photograph. The more you complete the bigger your portfolio will get.
If you do a good job at a good price word will soon get about. Word of mouth is one of the best forms of advertising!
I work full time albeit shifts and run my business on my days off, have been doing this for 6 years now. Hoped to go full time this year but missed the redundancy by two places this year!! Bugger !!
still all the time you have another income you can plough all your profits back into your business to get it built up ready for when you want to go full time. Get a good accountant right from the start he will save you money in the long run.

Watched the tutorial thats included with the software, After being told where to find it) posterised the image, traced it, a little colour editing and then cleaned up the nodes on a few things. End result was very good, And it was a lot easier than in Corel!
I still got a lot to learn !!!!!!

    Hi,
All i want to do is export from Corel photo paint into sign lab and print image with gerber machine. Just wondering what file format is best to export from corel and also what sort of dpi i should be exporting as bearing in mind that the Gerber is max 300dpi. Its just a small test to see what a photo will turn out like. Say a normal 7×4 photo and blow it up to maximum without having to tile it so maximum height for printing will be 299mm
Hope his is a bit clearer???? 😕

Not a problem Mort, the reason i asked is that it is an area i am interested in. The bikes have basicly the same low surface energy plastics fitted and as such getting “normal”vinyl to stay on them is not possible. I have tried some stuff from the USA which is great and i can get it from Ireland as well. Just trying to find similar stuff in the UK thats why i asked if you are doing the bikes.

Trials bikes are used for Trials (going slowly over obsticals without putting your feet down) points are awarded for putting feet down lowest number of points at the end of the day wins the trial.
Motocross is going as fast as possible round a dirt circuit with jumps racing against other bikes fist one to the finish is the winner. (never me!)

    Very true Rob,

Print One were great by the way, and sent me a 10mt sample foil, used it on a job today and its just as good as the Gerber foils, so will be using them for my consumables. Gonna try their gold and silver mirror spot foils as one of my customers has requested it. Its going outdoors but will be laminated so hope they will be ok. needs to last a year tops!

If Cadlink hadn’t come through for me the whole lot would have gone back! In all fairness the engineer wasnt at fault as he had asked his company for the required training but hadnt had it. I cant believe Spandex actually sent someone to install a machine and software that dosnt know the first thing about one of the products.

And when i phoned with the problem the next day, i was told by the guy on the end of the phone that he also didnt know the product, as you can imagine i was getting well pi**ed off with the whole situation. Very nearly called them back to say come and pick it up.

Still all is well at the moment and i am slowly getting to know the software, there is a large doubt in my mind though as to whats gonna happen if it breaks down though. Like i said before time will tell.

  • Just out of curiosity what was the cost of the 4 day Omega course at Spandex ?

    Dave

  • Hi thats what i intend to do, as i am ok with Corel 10 i was gonna carry on using it and just import into Omega to assign colours and cutting untill such time as i can use Omega properly.

  • Hi all,
Thanks for the replies, most helpfull. Ive opted for Omega. been told i will get a comprehensive manual with the software so should be able to pick it up and Spandex do courses if i cant. The other reason is the Gerber enhanced fonts i think they look great and I have a job lined up already for them.

Hi all well that caused a lively debate!! Thank you to every one that contributed with their “own” opinions.

The story so far is this. At the moment we basically use only cut vinyl from our Roland camm 1 for all our signs and decals.

We have tried screen printing some decals with good results but not a good adea as we work from home and dont like the idea of lots of “nasty” chemicals around the workshop.

We want a digital printer for decal production, So i enquired about the PC60 as an entry level printer. General opinion was that high production costs and some issues with banding make this a not so good choice.

I ask about the Versa Camm, excellent machine but no spot colours for what we do these are a necessary (we are printing onto clear vinyl) and eco solvent not seen to be as good as “real” solvent.

Suggest i look at Uniform Cadet, booked a demo even took my cheque book with me, met some great guys who were very helpfull and showed me what the cadet could do. Thought to myself that yes, this is the machine for me, it can do everything i want and more and the running costs are resonable but still no spot colours but i could get round that. Even asked about combined deal with a laminator as well!

Called in to see my biggest customer on the way home, (i supply both his shops with my decals) seems that the trend is for metallic decals with gold and chrome spot colours and this is what he wants from now on! as well as the standard ones we have screened for him in the past (clear vinyl white text with a black outline our stock of them is fast running out) and lots of them.

Looked at the Gerber Edge 3 years ago did exactly what we wanted but out of our price range then and probably still is, Got in touch with supplierand low and behold they are doing a special on it and the price i in line with the Versa and the Cadet machines.

Now we do not do large scale signs and at the end of the day a large format printer such as the Cadet or the Versa although very good machines would i suspect not be used to there full potential and as we have no plans to break into the large format side of things i have now discounted them.

We have booked a demo with the Gerber machine for next Friday so will see how it performs with our designs. Production costs, although dearer than inkjet and solvent printers is still what we expected and will not affect prices of our end product. PC60 is out of the question in this area as its expensive to run.

I would just like to say to everyone that has replied to my couple of postings THANKYOU! The help and advice you have given freely has been most helpfull.

    Hi Robert,
I seem to remember someone mentioned a possible intro of a “white” ink cant remember where i read it though!
As for the “metal” effect spot colours, I realise that i could print onto metal effect vinyl using the Cadet to achieve the same results as a Gerber spot colour but the trouble is that most of our work is printed on clear vinyl.

I went for a demo yesterday at B&P came away safe in the knowledge that the cadet was the machine for me. Called in on one of the customers i supply with decals and there is a trend for metallic decals and other spot colours. And if i can print white on clear i can have a large regular order for decals. Came home really pleased with the day, good demo of an excellent machine, friendly people and a customer that is expanding an already large regular order! Sat in the workshop last night and suddenly thought S**T the cadet wont print white! Now The cadet will do all our other work with ease, but not our largest customers work. The Gerber will do it all, and as all our stuff is small work then i am going to have to re-think and go with the Gerber. Just a bit concerned as to the cost per meter to run the Gerber though, after all we need to stay competative.

I am about to order a uniform cadet machine from B&P what is the best vinyl for me to use, is that going to be the same, ie a cast vinyl that is suitable for solvent printers.

    Hi Rodney,

Thats clear about letting the colours “bleed” and then cutting to correct size within the coloured area. But am i right in thinking that i have to apply a specific colour to the outline i want to the machine to cut so it will only cut that particular outline?

  • Hi Robert, just followed the link you supplied for the Uniform Cadet machine. We are a small company looking to purcase our first full colour printer / cutter. This “cadet” machine looks identical to the Versa camm that we have been looking at. Roland are quoting £8999.00 for the versa camm whats the price for the Cadet? Do they do lease purchase? just e-mailed Roland to see if they can do the Versa camm on a lease purchase, no reply as yet.
