  • My New Gerber Edge is installed!

Posted by Dave Springate on July 15, 2004 at 8:54 pm

Well quite a traumatic two days so far! Edge was supposed to be installed on Monday (engineer called in sick) so had another one turned up on Tuesday to install the machine. I was expecting to much i think, thought i might have got a few pointers on the software but nothing was forthcoming. After installing the software on my PC and plugging in the plotter and the Edge the engineer left me at 4 oclock with it all plugged in and running but not able to produce anything!! Sat there thinking what have i done ? have i just wasted 11k

Anyway on his way home the engineer called Cadlink and i had a guy called Bernard call me, top man ! he talked me through it and i produced my first job, 10 decals for a customer using two spot colours and the freebie vinyl that came with the machine full marks to Cadlink.

Back in the workshop this morning and created my first job entirely in Sign Lab (i gotta lot to learn) used Convex 6 mil clear and laminated it with 8 mil clear, print was perfect put it into plotter and it wouldnt cut.
Called Spandex (they didnt know what the problem was) 10 mins later a guy from Cadlink called Paul phoned, talked me through it and away the job went (Top marks again Cadlink)

Spandex, mm, Spent a whole heap of money with them and to be honest im not that impressed with them or their knowledge of the product (Sign Lab ) that they recommended!!!! I have a feeling that once they have your money then thats it , they dont wanna know. Time will tell. I am really pleased with the output from the Gerber though, and Print one have been helpfull too.

As for Cad link, what can i say, FULL MARKS !!! really helpfull thanks guys.

Anyone want to give me a freebie lesson with SignLab? All offers of help will be gratefully accepted.

glad to hear you have things up and running mate.. great news!

signlab, well i havent had any real dealings with them over the years but i do highly recommend their software. (never used it much for printing though). good to hear they came up trumps for you mate.. didnt look like spandex were going to do it. 😕

spandex have excellant products without a doubt. the problem is, they seem to think they are the only ones with such products.
there attitude to our company many years back was enough for us to make sure we would never have to rely on them again. we had the full kit, vinyls the lot… still treated us like muck..
today, we only buy little bits and pieces every once in a blue moon.. but nothing compared to our spends monthly with other suppliers.
    their loss… 😉
11k is a heck of allot of money for them to sniff at.. when we started out they took £25 thousand for our kit, gerber 4b 12 inch wde cutter etc… still treated us bad back then, and seem to still do the same thing today, by the sounds of it.

lucky for them signlab pulled through for them. can you imagine how you would feel tommorrow if they hadnt?

    good for signlab 😉

If Cadlink hadn’t come through for me the whole lot would have gone back! In all fairness the engineer wasnt at fault as he had asked his company for the required training but hadnt had it. I cant believe Spandex actually sent someone to install a machine and software that dosnt know the first thing about one of the products.

And when i phoned with the problem the next day, i was told by the guy on the end of the phone that he also didnt know the product, as you can imagine i was getting well pi**ed off with the whole situation. Very nearly called them back to say come and pick it up.

Still all is well at the moment and i am slowly getting to know the software, there is a large doubt in my mind though as to whats gonna happen if it breaks down though. Like i said before time will tell.

maybe now is the time to get something drawn up in writting, threaten them with sending it back right away. im sure you will get it in writing pronto 😉

the thing is, after sales etc is everything with kit like this & at this kind of price tag. they have your money now. so no need to worry about much if they loss a single cutomer for sales in vinyls or ribbons… but… the good thing about this site and others like it is… we now have a voice that will be heard by thousands of other sign makers just about to shell out on the same sorta kit… 😉

    Very true Rob,

Print One were great by the way, and sent me a 10mt sample foil, used it on a job today and its just as good as the Gerber foils, so will be using them for my consumables. Gonna try their gold and silver mirror spot foils as one of my customers has requested it. Its going outdoors but will be laminated so hope they will be ok. needs to last a year tops!

The chrome foil is absolutely brillo. I used to use miles of the stuff. Print one saved us a fortune on foils when I used an Edge at my last job. (And they used to put a packet of sweets in every foil box)

    Rob
I’ve udes and edge for 2 years, graet machine can do wonderful stuff from decals to big stuff. There foils are expensive, £75 for cmyk and £70for solid. There are suppliers that do them for £44.00 ive used them for over a year and had no problems with them.
If you want to save money drop me a line.

As Ive said graet machine but consumables are expensive from Spandex.
    Frank 😉

yeh, printone offer a great service and beat the likes of spandex on price per ribbon by about £30. ive used them for a few years now, one of the reasons i thought them a must for the buying group.
that and the fact dave staden is one of the most knowledgable guys i know of in the thermal ribbon feild.
