Hi David, there are a few out there that should be able to help. GT Acrylic display, mid west or perhaps Applelec who have a fairly new product. Stuart is contact at Gt, gabby at Applelec but I don’t personally have a contact at mid west.
    Hope this may help

    Hi Martin,

There will be a number of suppliers that should be able to help on this, Perspex Distribution, Oshino as just two examples. If you advise them the depth as this is really important to calculate the correct amount of LEDS, ensure the lightbox you white out on the inside if you can as this can massively improves the light output. Both of these, though I do have more, should be able to offer layouts and the most cost effective solution for you. You may well already have the answer, but hoping that I may have been able to help as only just joined the group.

    My best regards
    Sam

Sorry all, added a posting thinking I was replying to this posting, had a week off and brain gone to mush I think!

I was advising to ensure you use the correct doubloe sided tape if going down this route and to make sure that both surfaces prepped before hand also.

The other option is of course to try and persuade them into a sign tray mounted to the wall, painted to a lighter colour, or a tray painted black and do as I have shown in photos this afternoon (or vinyl as you have suggested in your posting).

Let me know if I can help further.

Are the letters already made? If not shout hold :).

When making opal polycarbonate backtrays in all letters these can be oversized by a few mm creating a key line of illumination, the polycarb/acrylic acts effectively as an edge lighting, pic to follow.

The other as you suggest is a flat cut Matt dibond letter either oversized as a feature or undersized mounted to wall to reflect the light off. Please do emailif you want further advice as this is a common problem area we deal with.

On 95% of letters we make with backtrays in opal to omit the problem of unsightly spotting on backgrounds, hence me saying to use Matt white dibond if the letters you have made dont have them leaving the LEDs exposed to reflect.

Hope that this helps and photo to follow.

I would recommend etch and infill, eps or ai files, make sure you are aware from start how it’s been fixed so holes can be laser cut from panel or speak to someone re fixings with VHB tape.

If you send a file to a supplier they will best advise you on the method/route to go down. Also advise depth of material required, most done are. 1.5mm as a guide but do get asked for 2mm and 3mm also.

October 22, 2012 at 3:09 pm in reply to: LED electrical problem – help please

    Message that I hope helps:

So he has a 100 Watt 12 Volt power supply, depending on the power supply that has been used they usually have circuit protection inbuilt such as overload and short circuit protection. So this means we could do with more information on the power supply such as make and model.

We also need to find out the load of the LEDs, Watts per module.

Is the cable all brittle leading up to the module or just around the entry point?

As a first guess I would say the hole is either too small or sharp edge, causing damage to the cable which has cause a short circuit to the dibond. You get bigger electrical arcs the bigger the power supply as they produce a larger current, this may have happened a few times causing the sign to go off then come back on.

If the charring of cable is only around the entry point I would definitely say it is down to this. Maybe a larger hole and grommit or a sheathed cable instead.

You have to ensure that the back of the letter and the material you are adhering to are both prepped correctly as can be a common cause of failure that the letter is thought of but not the surface being bonded to. You need a product vhb tape as an example that will expand and contract where as some adhesives simply won’t withstand the temp range and will crack and fail in a short space of time.

Speak to Innova Solutions, really helpful guys who know there products.

A bevelled acrylic would be far cheaper than a prismatic cut MDF letter that then needs to be finished – there would be big bucks between the two options for sure!

I think what you need to look into firstly, is this prismatic, chamferred or beveled. I have called a friend of mine in the industry and he is sending a photo which I will forward as soon as received to give you a guide.

MDF made and finished/sprayed to a gold.

    Pic to follow.

I think most suppliers would know what you are looking for but opinions can vary between prismatic, bevel or chamfered which I know in past has caused problems. As per Phils email it is very much font dependant and do tend to be router cut from MDF, foam as examples but do require a lot of finishing.

Do you have an actual photo of what you are trying to acheive?

The panel if spilt in two would need rebating. This helps with the joint expanding/contracting, within a frame also does finish it off nicely. If asking for a composite tray drop your size slightly so can be made from 1 sheet routered and folded. If you ask for it to be made from one sheet suppliers will advise what size you can have.

The only bit I can help or make a comment on is re cutting this panel into two, just be very aware re expansion and contraction on acrylic as if mounted in two sections butted up together initially they may well be up to 5mm apart next time you look – I am only advising as one of my clients had advised me on this. I dont do fitting work personally but have heard this a few times. 😕

Am sure others will best advise on the fitting of the 100mm off wall far better than I.

    Good luck with your install.

Think we would need to know the make up of the sign to help answer you, sign tray, letters?

The more info you can give I am sure we can all advise better for you.

Hi John, that is great news, would very much like to see how it work outs for you, presume you can router this material as per sign rock – I do remember like most porous products it may take a lot of finishing but worth it for the end result.

Keep me posted as I am interested?

Many years ago I came across a product I believe called sign rock but at that time was only available in 4 x 2 sheets upto 50nm deep I recall, it did have a high cost though but could router and engrave into it.

However, if you think foam painted is too expensive this wouldn’t work but a great material when finished.

September 19, 2012 at 2:18 pm in reply to: views on LED illuminated sign needed?

Hi, I have had a quick look at your enquiry to all. It actually sounds like an edgelit kit required. As with any LEDs the light will only travel so far so the size of panel is very important. The graphics can also make a vast difference as dark colours absorb the light. Often people get asked to engrave into the panel which can be very effective.

Another factor is the location of the sign, if for example is in a room full of spot lights this may also not help with the general illumination of the sign or with a fluorescent lamp above also.

    Hope this helps in someway.

    Sam
