• VHB tape on wood

    Hi
We are making up some v-carved cedar signs to go inside a boardroom.

The cedar is untreated, and we want to VHB tape them to various places around the room

Does the wood need any special treatment to make the VHB stick?

We had thought of routering out a hollow in the back to put a metal or dibond plate, but that seems to be very over the top for this job.

    Simon.

Yea, you could embed keyhole plates on the reverse but as you say maybe over the top. Using tape I’d seal the backs with varnish/sanding sealer. If they are v carved then I’d guess the boards are fairly thick/heavy? so maybe the tape could release slowly over time? May be that the mechanical fixings would be safest over time.

Thanks Neil. Actually they are pretty lightweight and not very large at all, so if I can do it without mechanical fixings that would be very good.

We oftern use Velcro or Dual Lock for internal applications like this.
Self adhesive version but also stapled. Gives you the chance to reposition as well.
as long as they’re not likely to be nicked though!

I’d still seal the backs though. But as Neilly says velcro might be handier to use and if you staple it then it wouldn’t be absolutely necessary to seal the backs.

I would always check with a tape specialist, they are bound to be able to know the best tape to use in this application.
