I sometime think this is OK, if you have staff, but the best part to look into is Credit control, It is Law based,

Guides on employment law, health and safety regulations and credit control for running a business.

You may be doing most of this anyway, in your day today Bizz.

Not so long a go, I was given some Prolene, 9 series Liners, from the rep, I have about 8 and I am finding them OK also. Have you seen the liners wheel at all, have you used one ?. I find them OK one way only. Not so good on Small Traction Engine Wheels.

So we all are holding a meeting with the Council in the Hall next Monday. But all we will get, Sorry no money at this time, I keep paying poll tax. Jayne it’s so nice to hear about your hobbies also. Did a Steam Show at Sandringham, with HM the Queen Mum at show, but Steam and our four legged friends, it did not mix, Do you do many shows, yourself.

It’s all red tape, sorry to say, The WRVs are Old school and all things must be checked by HQ. The WRVs members do good work. But it must not be seen to be picking one person forward. Lets say you wished to print on the back your logo/ company name. someone may see this, that the WRVs have picked you forward, and sadly the big boys that fund, big time will stop funding them.

I am not saying you wish to put your logo on the same mugs, at all, but still HQ always need to see all gifts before hand. Rules

Graham, I do on average $14,000 a month for account clients.

No money no goods is a bit idealistic in my view. You’re competing with other companies that will get the business simply because they offer accounts.

If I had the no money no goods philosophy, I’d have to close my doors.

The secret is not extending more credit than you have agreed to.

I am with you on that one Shane, it’s hard today, you will always have someone under cutting you, and then you must offer it on account to get the job, Look at E Bay signs at low, low prices, with me dipping the brush hand painting on old Traction Engines, I get paid at the end each time, but a job maybe be in the workshop for 9 weeks,

    [quote="Janine Chrispin"]in the mouth!!

My mum went to our local hospital recently and unfortunately was diagnosed as having Parkingson’s. Anyway, when she was there she visited the local coffee shop that was run by the WRVS. She noticed that all their mugs were mismatched, so when she came back to the shop, she suggested that we should offer them a box of printed mugs and to put their logo on, plus a small reference to my business, so that it would get the company name out there.

As we are having a quiet moment, I decided that I would follow this up by ringing the WRVS and ask for a copy of their logo so that I could donate some mugs to our local hospital. Their reply was quite shocking. They said that they would have to discuss it with their marketing department as they were in the middle of having new mugs done. I said to them that this was a free donation and they said they would ring me back and let me know if they wanted it!

By 2pm, they hadn’t rang, so I telephoned our local Children’s hospital and made the offer to them and they snapped it up. They are going to sell them to raise some funds. The mugs will have their Wallace and Gromit note on and a small reference to my two websites.
    ———————————————————————————-

It’s all gone mad, It’s sad to say all they are looking for is cash all the time, so to put the money in to a pot, so then to pay someone to print new mugs. Sometimes it’s best ,say to print 6 and send them to the WRVS HQ and let them see your work, sometimes that way you may get an order to print a large order. Kind Regards Graham

That is my pet peeve (well one of them)

    Love…..Jill

I didn’t know that red has less readability. My reason for putting Tel in front of the telephone number was because it looked funny with just a number in the middle and the reason for the phone number in the middle was to split the two different parts (if that is the right word) of the sign.

    Janine

    quote Shane Drew:

Steve, I had a business that employed staff. never again.

I am booked up 4 weeks ahead usually, but I don’t take deposits. I found that put extra pressue on me to make deadlines. Now, I give the customer an approximate time, usually 14 to 21 days. this gives me the target of 14 days, but I know that I can slip to 21 days if I am behind.

Sometimes I have to put in some really long days, granted, but that is my choice.

I employ my father on a casual basis as he is retired. You will find some older handyman types that can not get jobs are more than willing to help and pass on their knowledge if you are looking for a fitter or general hand.

In the early days I had this exact problem you have now. It was hard for the first year, but I got around it in several ways.

    1) I factored my accounts. By selling your invoices, you get your money quickly, and pay a % of the invoice cost in commission. The down side to this, if the client does not pay the invoice in 90 days, you have to pay the money back. Look at this as a short term thing tho. It is not something I’d reccomend unless your profit margins are really good, but it is a good short term solution.

    2) I did not do small jobs on account. Payment on completion was the rule.

    3) Larger clients that had accounts, I offered 2 – 5% discount for early payment. Most large companies here, and local government too, have a rule, that if an opportunity arises to save money, they are obligated to take it.

    4) In the early days, I didn’t buy more product than I thought I could sell in the month. Don’t get sucked in by the sales people offering you a ‘good buy’ for quantity or a roll rate. It is not a good buy if it ties up your cash, and it is sitting on your shelves for a few months.

Remember, putting on staff at the size you are now, you may actually be training someone to go in opposition when they get confident.

I employed about 10 people over the last 12 years, and I now have 8 opposition sign shops that were former employees. They know my clients personally, they now my pricing stucture, and they know by design philosophy.

I don’t mean to me too negative Steve, but just giving you my experience.

I hope whatever you do, works out for you.

Steve if you are week on accounts and money matters this is the area you need help, not the workshop, I am still sorry to say, all this 21 days and the word slipping is a no go’er sorry, No Money, No Goods,

Sometimes when you people are right on top of it, you can’t see the wood for the trees, You hold all the key’s Steve, you hold all the keys, take time out and find yourself first, them your wife, and you will find all will come.

Bottle necks, call it all you wish, it’s you and only you that holds the keys to sorting this matters out, One thing at a time. Don’t take on work you can not meet targets for, Only a fool would do that, and in the end if you keep letting people down, your name will suffer. Bills you need to be more in control of billing and set your terms, payment with in seven days or COD, you do the work you need to be paid, payment by C Cards is the best way forward everyone lives with Credit cards today we all have a card in our pocket today, even to join here, I used my C Card. Get payment always first. ” (chat.) stop messing about” (chat.) It’s no good looking at the post each day hoping for payments to be in a letter, trust me no one wishes to pay to soon, that’s what’s keeping them a float by not paying you.

Don’t be a fool over money matters, right from the start “say”, How are you wishing to pay? NO Pay No Way, Got it!!. If you let this side slip you will be forever running around, always looking for new work to make ends meet, becauce you are waiting to be paid , ending up with you having no time for yourself. My friend start today change, you must become a little harder over matters of money also. Graham

First of all stop!! sit down!! have a cup of tea, Right, sit at a table and have two sheets of paper. On one you write the good side of your work and on the second you write the bad site. Take time out in your life to sit back and look at them both. Money is not B all, life offers you more Steve.

I ask you to look at the clock you will see 24 hours. I ask that you then portion your 24 hours up. Stick to this time table 9 hours must be for sleep, so we have 15 left, if you wish to work a 10 hour day, that would be good for you. So we have 5 hours just for your needs, you need to find time for you. Steve

Once you become so over come with work, you need to sit down and think, life holds so much for you, so enjoy yourself, The Grave Yard is a clear sign of what is to come, until that time find yourself, give time to you.
Go fishing, find something that you love to do, find yourself within your own 5 hours a day. You have some good friends on this Forum UK signboards and you are calling out, my friend you need to give yourself time and all will become well in your life. Your wife is your best Friend be kind to her, walk! talk!, be only kind to her, You need to sit back and look at your life at this time, and what is best for you and your wife first. I make this most clear, stop taking on more than you can give out put too, talk to anyone, that you are letting down on targets. One thing at a time.

    Congratulations Graham & Jean.

We had our 20th anniversary this year too, I cant imagine my husband saying anything like that about me in public though unless…

    a) he wanted to buy something very expensive
    b) he’s already bought something very expensive and was creeping
    c) i had his arm twisted so far up his back it was about to snap

    😀

Love between two people, is holding within the ability to look beyond, love is a time of working together in all things. Not only do you say your words before God, but most of all you say words to one and other.
To love Her, To care for Her,

Time, brings many things, sadness and joy, I am most grateful for this time in my life, that I may grow understanding Jean more and more each day. With simple words, I always say to Jean.

The birds call and sing for you, The moon and stars shine for you, and God has given me one great gift in the knowing of you. She is a wonderful Lady, beyond all price or any value upon this earth.

I hope that I may be blessed with time to see 25 years, and it would be so nice to come to Our Beloved Highlands of Scotland once more. Jean and I love Scotland so much. In our first years of being together we would come to Scotland once a month. (Cameron of Erracht) we can visit our Estate and dream for a short time, and stand on our small plot of land and become Lord and Lady.

I am proud of all that comes from the Highlands, For in the hills my heart will always be.

OK I never wish to kill any-ones joy, I think Fireworks 1, must only be sold by the firework makers, and only one main out let/agent in each town.

Fireworks may only be sold 4 days before the 5th.

You may only let of fireworks between 8 10. 30. no fireworks maybe set off until Nov 5th, sod all this Saturday before and Saturday after, No Nov the 5th is the day come rain or shine.

The only people that can set of Fireworks the Saturday before and after November the 5th are paid displays for charity’s.

You see it is not just letting of fireworks any more, it’s how can I better myself in the art of making the biggest bang. The fireworks that are coming into this good old UK are bombs, made for displays only, not back gardens and people do not understand that the bomb that’s sitting in the house with them. you need to be 150 yards away from them. I drive for the British Red Cross (Fire Support Unit) and we see first hand what this is doing. Last year one case, a persons shed went up, he was trying to make fire works in the back garden shed, from plans seen on Webb site http://www.skylighter.com/skylighter_in … wesdes.htm Have a look, he was bracking down fireworks to make one big one. No I don’t wish to stop anyone having fun but sorry it’s getting un safe, for our team Nov 5th is a war zone, we have seen Cats and Dogs burnt because some one tapped a fires on it to see it suffer. A&E are pushed to the full. The UK is letting war come in peace time. It’s no fun for me or our team at all.

I have a Black Lab, and each night we go for a walk, I understand keeping him in doors on the 5th, but in October say the 11 th of Oct fireworks are going off. No sorry get them stopped until the day. :uksbrules: Look how much this is costing the UK, think how many services are pulled to the full, The NHS is not the best at this time even without all this going on. When you tell someone you will be waiting 6 hours to be seen at A&E don’t come crying to me. Don’t play with fire.

Gilding can be quite painless with the use of computer cut masking.
Just cut an additional thin outline but don’t weed it off.
Apply the mask, then your size
(the thinner the size the brighter the gild, I use fast size tho)
    then peel off the outline.
When the size sets up, gild away.
    (I use patent not loose)
It should be squeaky not sticky.
(always make a test patch to stick your knuckle into)
Even I can gild with this method.
    Then outline with paint.
    Love….Jill

Jill years ago it was told to me, the best time to gild is first thing in the morning, have you ever been told this?

as for Ghosts, cant say i’ve seen one, but a friend and i who were fishing at a mill pool one night, heard very difinitive footsteps behind us on the path, we often fished this pool and the last people thru each night were the indians from the takeaway at about 2am, on occasion they’d drop us off a curry, we turned to say hi, and the footsteps stopped, no-one was there, that was a drastically shortened fishing trip after that minute !!!

had a few like that, i’ve never been good in the dark, and if i’m ever sea fishing and the fog rolls in, i’m gone !!! too many iffy films as a kid i’m afraid !!

Graham, are those your words or a quote ? thought provoking anyways,

gvp, thats more how i feel ! religion is a dangerous thing, more wars have been started ‘in the name of our god’ than for any other reason i’d’ve thought, hell…. just look at the middle east on a daily basis.

The words belong to all mankind, for the clear sign is the Grave Yard, God simply asked that we (give) not by money, money is man made, by a simple word, in waking say thank you for the new day, God asks that we all follow good and work in a good way, and to be kind towards our fellow human. We all are asked to learn, and to grow in our life understanding a little about each fellow traveler, black and white, for this journey (life) is only temporary, and it is our duty to work in good ways towards each other. I believe in One God, and my life is built on one understanding, Judge not one living thing, For God will judge all things in time. For I will be judged, by my actions and my work done upon this Earth.
I hope my heart will show me the gift within to be kind, and my God will show me kindness within mankind.

My hearts words to you, Graham

The trouble is there are so many religions in the world & they all think their way is the right way! they can’t all be right.

That’s why I don’t believe in any of them.

If all pray to one God, all are right, For God created all living things even before the big bang!!! all are born free, to pray to one God, The One part of the total sum. Many pray and only God will judge all things, not mankind, for our time is short upon this Earth, We all are a long time coming, think 1000 years ago we did not hold the understanding of our time to come, but once we are born, soon we understand we are to die. We all are a short time staying, and a long time going to meet our maker. All mankind shares one common thing, that we all will pass on, look to the grave yard this to be a clear sign. Each religion shares that one path, that we all follow.

Me also, it’s only good to show your work, it’s word of mouth that works the best, and by doing a good job at the right price, keep your prices fare and you will be supported by many. If your prices are to high then!!!!!
You have Yellow Pages OK if your name begins with A, WWW is only a good way of letting people see your work.

Hello Graham welcome glad you are enjoying your self it’s a fine place to be

    Lynn 😎

It is a most welcoming site, getting to see some great stuff, Photos on the side of trucks, My work is good old hand painting, and lining, gold leaf. Traction Eng’s It is great to also make them at 6 inc scale, and see them steam. With Traction Engine work it’s using the skills of the old. I am looking forward to meeting a old timer on here, that did my kind of work. Mind you he would need to be getting on a bit to hold all the skills needed. I am always willing to learn ; take the guy with the gas tank, forgot his name, what a gift, love to meet him and pick up a number of tips. I do enjoy having a go with the air brush, but I am a long ways from painting trucks. I have painted the Royal Gates at Sandringham, and gold topped them even done work inside Sandringham church, and St Paul’s, but air brushing is a world apart, each fair ground I visit its all air brush work today. Its the sign of the times I am some of the last keeping the history Britain’s history alive. I have just jumped down from the soap box, Ha Ha Ha see you soon Graham

Hi what fitting tools are you needing to use, I am a small workshop if I can help, Sorry you are going along this path, Sign of the Times, sorry to say,
Don’t have holidays, sit at home, can of beer in one hand and shotgun on stand by. I never understood our USA fellows shoot first, ask second, but I am slowly coming around to that way of thinking.

    Sorry Mate Graham
