    Hi Stephen!

We have had this in the past, whenever we have a customer wanting over 100 A2 posters on 150/160gsm gloss paper we send the job out. I would recommend a company called 1st Byte who have a Digital Web Press that can print A2 if the posters are different or with 500 A2 posters you could also speak to a local litho printer with a B2 or B1 press (if all posters are the same).

    Hi!

As someone who has printed labels for a customer using a digital press all I can say is BEWARE. We did some for someone and they stock them in a freezer and unsurprisingly came back complaining that the stickers had peeled off. The problem is not with inks or the substrate it is with the adhesive, it has to be specifically freezer adhesive, other stuff even when it is ‘permanent’ simply becomes brittle and looses all adhesion.

May 3, 2005 at 10:28 am in reply to: what are peoples views on Citrosol inks for the cadet?

Do I sense that like me many other people have yet to receive samples from the citrosol inks from Bp. I think that from what is being said here I will order sets of regular ink and wait for a sample before I order a set of the citrosol inks. Also if you read the stuff from them on the new inks they seem to be saying that the new inks are ‘almost’ as durable as the standard inks.

    Also the following line from their website needs thinking about;

    quote :

CitroSOL organic solvent ink is also easier on your printer and it’s printheads,

Seeing as the main upgrade that Bp do to roland machines is changing the tubes etc to withstand solvent inks, does this mean that citrosol inks can be used on roland machines? and if the new inks are as durable as standard solvent inks does this mean that using the new inks and a roland machine gives you a machine capable of printing very durable print. I’m confused here.

we went for a Cadet after the show. I always feel that once you have something you should sell it. But before you make the purchase do what we did, tell you customers that you can now print upto 54″ wide, show them an example and see what the feedback is. The 30″ output did look very small and less eye-catching than the 54″ output at the stand.

Alan, if you are working with full colour graphics, and I assume that you are I would suggest that you go through something like micromart magazine and go for any system that is listed as ‘Graphics’ or ‘Games’. Go for an Athlon 64 processor as these are cheaper than the equivalent speed Intel processors and you will also have a system ready for the next release of Windows (64Bit) Go for a decent size hard drive of over 120GB as these are cheap enough these days. Memory is also very cheap and for my money the best upgrade to speed up your computer, Go for over 1GB as the operating system and any softaware you have running such as Corel will take up at least 512MB. The graphics card should be decent but not over the top, a 64MB card should be enough, just make sure that the graphics are not built into the motherboard as this will be shared memory and cut in to your main memory. Also go for a CD/DVD writer for backup purposes.

May 1, 2005 at 4:22 pm in reply to: buying new equipment what do you recommend pc or mac?

I have always taken Apples advertising and hype regarding the power of their computers and the fact that their operating system does not crash as often as windows. Therefore have never bought one. We recently purchased a HP Indigo Digital press and had to purchase a mac (Indigo uses Unix) anyway we took some advise and bought a Powermac G5 Tower, Dual 1.8ghz with 1.25GB ram. After using it for a couple of weeks all I can say is that the build quality of the G5 is absolutely incredible both internally and externally. BUT. The mouse is a piece of crap, no right button so you have to use the keyboard and shortcuts, whats that about.

Anyway, we tested the G5 with a another windows pc with an Athlon 64 3400+ processor and 1GB ram. Considering the mac has a dual processor it was soundly beaten by the pc. We tested this by using the same software, Corel, Photshop, Illustrator on both computers. We did stuff like finding out which was quicker at opening a large EPS, which could run a particular filter quicker etc.

I also found that the mac crashes just as often as the pc, it just has a good utility to let you know that a particular piece of software has become unstable and lets your force it to quit to stop having to restart the computer.

    That’s my 2 cents worth.

I agree with nik, corel is one of the best pieces of software for PDF reading and creation. Just make sure that when the customer saves the PDF that they convert the text to curves.

I have been in the litho print industry for over 10 years and I still worry about what work will come out like. You will never get a perfect proof of your job on a home printer. Simply get the printer to send you a proof. You will find that Corel is one of the worst pieces of software for fountain fills and for drop shadows. Make sure that you set fountain fill steps to 256 and BEFORE you do a drop shadow make sure that the resolution of the drop shadow is about 300Dpi (Layout, Page set up, CLick on Workspace, then General and then Rendering Resolution).

It is ALWAYS the responsibility of the customer to check copyright issues when he requests a particular logo and up to him to get any necessary permissions, so in this case don’t worry go ahead and do the job.

We went to the likwid art stand as well, the guy doing the sales part was helpfull, but I agree the one doing the demo was quite rude, but when we went there, there were around 20 people were crowding around the poor guy so I can understand. However the people at liquid lens had no such excuses, we stood around their stand for over 5 minutes before we were even acknowledged, they had 1 customer at the time and in the end we just walked off.

    Hi

I’m sure that the flatbed must have cost serious money and you will have spent time and money setting up the premises etc. If you have taken this much time and spent this much money I would suggest going to a marketing firm, this way you can do what your good at and let someone else do what they are good at. If you go with a rep, you will still have to set aside time to deal with them. Also your market would seem to be quite specialist and I’m guessing here but I would think that what you will be offering would tend to be aimed at the medium to large business who can afford to spend on such items, these businesses usually approach marketing companies to find them someone who can do what they need.

Good luck with you venture. πŸ˜€

    Hi

I recently bought an item from ebay which also looked to good to be true. we had a telephone system put in by BT and just the phones for reception and one of the offices cost us over Β£300 each 😳 (although they are very nice and flash) after a couple of weeks the marketing guy decided that he should have one of these phones (he was lumbered with a Β£10 phone from Argos) and so on the off chance that some one would be selling on eBay he went on and found a guy in ilford (London) selling a barely used one (same model) for a ‘buy now’ price of just Β£50 and turned up to work the next day and plugged his new phone in.

He is now happy but I had to pay over Β£600 for two bloody phones. (hot)

April 1, 2005 at 12:59 pm in reply to: is it possible to print onto Canvas with a cadet?

    Hi

We tried printing onto canvas with our versacamm as an experiment (BAD IDEA) for a start we set it to print at its top resolution, it took for ever and used serious amounts of ink. It was left to dry for a full 24 hours and then we tried to stretch it over a frame, we ended up with an awful lot of cracking in the print and the end result was +*%Β£^&* terrible. I would suggest a printer which is made for Giclee printing such as the OCE and Epson 10600 for any work on canvas or for any reproduction of a photo or artwork.

    Hi

the mimaki only prints, they are pushing a printer and cutter package for around the Β£10k mark, saw this last year at a trade show at Olympia. Complete waste of time and space for us but may be ok for someone else. At the moment the best solution is to go with one of the Roland machines, and by this I would suggest the grenadier from B&P, we have started to get problems with our Versacamm 54 that we did not foresee, they have to be protected for outdoor use but a decent laminater will solve this. If you go with the grenadier then you must make allowances for the True solvents environmental requirements, such as a a very good extraction system. We have our versacamm in a small office in the middle of our building without windows so we went with roland.

Sorry for the waffle, but in short GO WITH A B&P GRENADIER.

i used yellow pages once when I needed a plumber, now I have contact with a good plumber, he does not advertise in the yellow pages. Its all about word of mouth. I once got some very good advise from someone, this was that the decision maker in a business is usually the owner, and the owner usually lives in a nice house in a nice area, post flyers to these areas and you tend to get straight to the right people.

March 13, 2005 at 1:36 pm in reply to: can you print business cards on a cadet please?

If you wont to do business cards get yourself a Xerox Docucolour 12, these things have been around for ages but they are built like tanks, you should be able to find one for around a few grand, we bought ours new but we recovered the cost in just a few months. It is the only copier/printer that can take upto 350gsm card happily as it has a straight paper path and heats upto enough temperature to let the toner stick to the card properly, this also means that it can print on to any paper and not just stuff made especially for copiers. On these machines it costs less then Β£2.00 for 500 business cards, and that includes the paper (just buy the paper in from you local Litho printer) What ever you go for make sure that you do not fall for the service pack (8p per SRA3) it actually works out to less then 3p for heavy coverage if you buy your own consumables.

I can never understand what this is about. It doesn’t matter which machine you use, they were both built to print outdoor stuff (allegedly), and as far as I am concerned all outdoor stuff should be laminated especially car/van wraps, its not as if it adds alot to the cost of the job and in the long term is better for you ’cause the customer won’t come running back to you after a few months complaining. It comes down to running costs and the amount of space (the cadet should never be used in a small space without at least an open window or extractor fan. We have the versacamm from Roland and have been happy so far, although to be honest I hear that B&p have a very good service (Oh well) πŸ˜•

I was originally told Β£5/m2 by roland (being truthful, makes a change), our costs have worked out to around Β£4/m2 on average. It all depends how you design the banner or vinyl. Try not to use full 100% coverage, as far as the customer is concerned even if the ‘job’ contains 50% coverage then it is ‘full colour’.

If I had the room I would work from home every time, the savings are incredible, for instance just on telephone costs (Telewest charge around Β£20) per month for unlimited telephone calls, of course this is residential only), savings in travel time and costs to an from work also add up over the year. If you have the room convert you garage or a room. Also ALWAYS tell your insurance company and the relevant people at the council.

I started by using the computers in my school to do designs for people (I did not have a computer of my own then) made enough money to buy a computer and then eventually set-up a company.

You have the most important piece of equipment that you need, and that is YOU. see someone like the Princes Trust and they will realize this and give you a decent grant to start-up on your own (I think available for people up to 35) πŸ™‚

March 13, 2005 at 12:00 pm in reply to: Telephone marketing, do you do it?

When we started our printing firm (over 15 years ago) we aimed to target Takeaways. We soon found that the best way to get business from these guys is to cold call. In fact I remember we used to be in the office from 9am till 6pm and then we would pick an area of the country (North England) and drive around to all the takeaways giving out our price list and usually we would give a 10% discount if they ordered on the day. Our working day lasted for 16 or 17 hours. We did this for just over a year, but we now have a good number of regular customers, some of whom have been with us from the start.

We never use the phone to contact potential customers because of the bad press in regard to cold-calling (I personally hate it). If you want my advise contact the customer face to face at their premises and be friendly even if they say that they do not need your services, believe me they will remember you when they do. Most importantly be confident with your service and product. πŸ™‚
