    Hi

Thanks for the info, I have been talking to Rob about something like this, but please be careful that you dont end up doing or saying libelous.

Although we may personally have a bad run with a company, there is no saying that everyone will have the same. Although I personally do not disagree with some sort of warning like this.

Thanks for the info, ps I think i know who it is anyways lol

    Hi

You could always get the edge flame polished, failing that a quick cheat:

Scrap the edges till smooth, then use a clear varnish! ‘Cheap as chips’

Try it on a spare piece 1st, but it works

You have no legal rights though if you supply 3rd party, not sure if you know that. If you do work for say, another sign company, they put your work on the wall (with all the terms and conditions), they go bust, you are not allowed to touch that sign. This is because the original contract was not with you.

So careful to all when dealing 3rd party.

As for taking bits off a sign, I know fitters who when not been paid have gone and taken the screws back out of the sign, and left it on the floor. They get round this by saying the company never supplied them, they did. Which then leads me to think that you are able to take away a sign you have made, thats not paid for. I have never heard of a fitter getting into trouble, but gets paid quick! lol

I reported this lot to the trading standards – I even had a telephone number for them (for some reason – their number was not with-held when I last received one of these calls).

Trading standards informed me these calls originate from the Manchester area – but they seem powerless to do anything about this.

I get about 3 or 4 a week, i was getting the same response as you were here, until i was told to report it to my telephone provider.

They, as i have been told, are the ones to put a formal complaint together, so it can be investigated.

Plan 2, tell them you have blacklisted your calls with the TPS, and ask how you got this number!

    Vince

ps try and get the company details, as there are a number of them doing this at the mo.

    Hi

All we print is the line drawings our guys need to cut out letters. So colour will be of no use to us. Our plotter at the mo is a HP, very good, but after 6 years its showing signs of major wear and tear. We use approx 500 mtrs of paper a month!

So thats why im trying to find a good replacement, at a reasonable price. Im out of touch on suppliers of these now.

Here are some clues: This is all i was given, and i never made up the chart below 🙄

There are 13 items hidden in this room in order to let you get out of this
    room. If you found:

0-6 items, your IQ is very low, total idiot
6-8 items, Low IQ, u r an idiot
    9-10 items, u r normal
11-12 items, your IQ is high, above the average.
13 items found and get out of the room, there are less than 4000 people in
    the world can do it.

The only clue I will give is “1994”

All the items are there, as i have found them! No im not that clever, but like Fredrik, i clicked forever!

This is not a 5min game, and i got very frustrated with it, but kept me occupied for an hour or so

The big problem i can see, how will you fit the perspex back?

Normally the letters would be punched to accept 1/2 brackets which the perspex is pop rivited to. This prob has not been done.

Backs can be done one of two ways, either a tracing of the back of the letter, or cut the backs slightly smaller than the face of the original artwork.

Fixing these with locators in the back will be the problem. I guess these have been soldered into place, which will have to be removed for the perspex to sit flush with the back.

If the spotting is a major problem, i can see the only way is for the letters to be taken down, and ask who ever made them to remove the bridges, and fit backs. Ask them to do this as quick as poss for you.

Not unless any one can see an easier way.

Sorry for the delat, its been a mad-house here 😮

    Spec’s as required

    BSEN10088 2B stainless steel (descaled)
Soldered together using Blowpipe Solder 40/60 Grade C BS219 (contains lead)
This is used after applying MA Flux & Bakers Fluid no5 (For ‘Keying’)

    Spray
Etch Primer – Zinc Tetraoxichromate twin pack etch, JW26/FD Dry Activator
    Then high build stoving primer
Final coat – Low bake Acrylic
    Cooked at 126 deg c for 20min

These are products we use for everyday use. We carry all product spec sheets, and can supply upon request. I can-not say what any other company may use.

I hope this is of use to you.

    Hi

Depending on the size of the letters, they are normally made from 0.9mm descaled stainless steel, a standard grade for the material would be grade 304. The returns are then soldered together. An etch primer is then sprayed on the letters, a base coat then a 2 pack acrylic top coat is applied to your specified colour. These would then be ‘cooked’ for the paint to go solid and ready for use.

This is the basic’s behind stainless letters. If you require more technical info, just write back, and when im back in the office on tuesday, i will find out what ever else you require.

Before buying any though, tell them what you want to use it for, and they should advise you of the best product for the job, as so many tapes these days are designed for certain things.

I hate it when larger companies hold out on payments. We have in the past resorted to some extreme ways of getting our money, one sure way, but you wont be doing any more work for them, threaten them with a bankruptcy notice, works better than CCJ’s

We have resorted to it, or pass to a Debt Collecting Agency such as CDI. They can seek bad debt up to 6 years ago, and charge 15%!

    Vince

I was told the majority of companies fail not because of a lack of work!

Mate, being aussie based I have no idea who these guys are. We have had our share of companies that have gone under here too, after appearing hugely busy and successful.

This company just happened to be not only the biggest Sign Company in the UK, but also the oldest, 200 years.

People always ask me how far do I want to expand my company, not in turnover but how many i employ. Answer is, i don’t! Many say this outlook is not the forward way of thinking in business, but these days, there is so much at stake. I would sooner have sustainable work than to start running short at critical times of the year (after xmas being the most notable).

I have always thought, with the number of smaller companies taking on larger contracts, would the “big boys” survive, and have always come to the conclusion, their days are numbered. The large roll out contracts appear to be reducing, and so does the level of service the largest companies offer.

My personal opinion regarding the large companies are, they are fighting too few contracts, and are reducing prices to an almost unsustainable level, just to get the work. Corners are then being cut, and so is quality. What effect that has on all the smaller companies they then sub work to? They want everything cheaper etc which then has a domino effect within the trade.

So i don’t think the collapse of Pearce is just accounting. As quoted to me only the other day, if a car costs £9k and you know its costs x to make, you don’t then say to a dealer i will give you £7k, they don’t devalue the car, yet as an industry, we are only too quick to do so (thanks Guy for the quote, i agree 100% with you).

My other major concern with this happening to Pearce, what affect will this be to many of the smaller companies who have supplied them? I only hope others will not be ‘taken’ with them! 🙁

I know many of the guys who work there, it is sad, because many wont find employment in the industry around here. Nothing to do with the standard of thier work, but thats the way things are going.

I will also see a copy of the accounts, as im also a creditor, but i know several smaller companies in the area are going to find things even harder, as they have been doing loads of work from them!

What i find odd, they have just moved into a “new” factory, after selling a lot of land, loads of new machines, and more so, loads of work!

I guess we will find out soon enough though.

It also brings home the fact that, even the biggest can fall, but when they do, normally its a big one.

    🙁

I agree with andrewkerrb on this. You have been supply signs for 5 years, you may not think they are the best, yet do we all think this way at some time or another. If your client is happy, does that not mean you have done your job? To have been doing this for 5 years is an achievement, that you should pride yourself on.

Just look at the posts asking for second opinions etc regarding work or future work, this is where this community stands out from anything else i have ever seen before.

The Sign industry has been wanting something like this for years. Rob you are a star :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

I would rather not say!!! They are very big though.

My experience is that, some of the larger companys do try at times to cut as many corners as they can, and to make signs as cheap as they can. Yet we can only dream of the resources they have!

I doubt this is unique to just our industry though.

Hand’s up who are cowboys in the world of sign making, I’m constantly getting fed up with the amount of crap sign makers coming into the trade, they got no experiance about materials and slap any old (oh i swore !) that they can their hands on onto customers signs.

    Hi

This is not just new companys who do this though. I wont say who the company was, as they are very large!

We had to correct a sign that had fallen apart, the thickness of materials used was too thin, the fixings used were 1/2 brackets, worse was they were not plated, so had rusted. This caused the letters to fall off the wall.

The sign was for a major hotel chain, so not even a one off!

To say that someone is a cowboy being new to the trade, is not always fair. To say the sign is no good just because we dont like it, is also not fair. Maybe if thier client was not happy, i would agree, but everyone has to start and learn somewhere.

I have been around the trade for a while, yet i have learned so much from these boards that i did not know. I only hope i can pass on my technical experience to others, which will help them out, even if they have been around for a while, we dont all know everything.

Im not being negative to your response, but feel that you may have been a little harsh.

I have used these for a while, and have had no problems. I would not lightly recom any supplier or product lightly, and i am sure most do understand the differences in compatables, but when i could buy a new printer with the savings i have made in less than 5 purchases, i think you will understand why i have recom these.

I do appreciate that for really expensive printers, i myself may think twice, for everyday printers though?

If i was you, i would call in several suppliers, and ask them for the best prices, and dont be fooled by the…..”we are giving you an 85% discount” talk!
