    Come on who’s excited!!

I love it, the best tournament on earth.

I know not many on here like football…

So to me, Glenn, Georgio, and all other football fans and especially Harry who on this occasion ‘only’ I will let support England as his team were robbed of a place

:cheer: :cheer: COME ON ENGLAND :cheer: :cheer:

Semi finals at least, I can feel it in my water.

Who fancies a sweep stake (?)

I too am looking forward to it. Would be nice to see some more home nations competing too.

Hope you are right about the semis at least.

I’m up for a sweepstake too.

    Come on England!!!

    He’s a Celt ……. think he’ll support England? 😉

No idea who’s going to win. But I reckon England will be out in the quarter finals. Argentina might be good for a bet tho. 🙂

So used to Scotland not being there that it makes no difference LOL, but I still get wrapped up in it regardless even tho I’m not much of a footie fan. It’s a brilliant event!

Couldn’t agree more about home nations, would love to see Scotland, Wales and Ireland in it, may be just maybe one time they will all qualify… 😕 but a couple would be nice

    I’ll sort a sweep stake out…anyone else 🙄

You leave Harry to me, the St Georges Flag I posted to him should be there tomorrow, it’s just big enough to fit his bedroom window 😀

Totally different atmosphere, working with footy fans with the radio on. Kinda gets a buzz going!

Not a huge fan but if it increases production, it works for me!!!

There was a Joc………..er Scottish bloke on the news yesterday as he was just leaving the UK to go to the world cup, had a England shirt on, he said as we are the UK he would support England……….top Jock in my opinion for seeing the wider picture.

    Sweepstake count me in:)

I have to be truthful here, i prefer to see guys holding odd shaped balls instead of kicking them 😕

i might get caught up in the odd game if i’m down the pub but, you won’t be trampled by me trying to get to the nearest tv or radio!

Well I’ll be cheering for the USA on Saturday.
As I’m Welsh it’s law that we support whoever is against England….. 😀

Sorry guys not much I can do about it 🙁

To be honest though I prefer Rugby, much more exciting to watch.

I’ll catch some games I guess but won’t lose any sleep if I don’t see many.

    Hi Neil.

Year but last we bought a house in Bren Rhonda. No chain from either party. We even had all our belonging in storage ready for the move, son enrolled in school. 2 weeks before the move seller pulled out. Reason being peer pressure from the other villagers to not sell to an English couple.

It made our life hell for 6+ months.

Sort of puts your comment into context!

Saying that, Rugby all the way for me too!

England mostly. Over hyped. And it’s a sad state of affairs when the best we can muster is Heskey up front & calamity James in goal.

Domestic football is a different matter. Roll on August. 😎

Yeh, that’s going a little overboard.

I’m only talking sport…………..just friendly rivalry.

I’ve got my ABE t-shirt on……………anyone but England
    😀

I was at the Wales – South Africa rugby international on Saturday and had some great banter with a few South Africans in front of us just as we do when we sit next to English, Irish, Scottish, French or Italian supporters at the 6 Nations.

    Go USA…….. 😉

Valid point Brian, We like seeing how many times Hesky falls over, he’s always down 😀 but does work well with Rooney.

    Georgio..I haven’t forgot the £1 😀 I will PM you.

Neil….. 🙁 what can I say, all this ABE stuff going on. I would love to see Wales in it and would be rooting for them as much as England as I would if Scotland were in.

I’m going to make sure you get the ‘Ivory Coast’ in the sweep stake for that 😀

i am not a football fan at all… just cant be bothered with it.

The only time Ive ever got caught up in a match was years ago with my mates, when we were in Spain. England were doing well in the world cup final rounds… combined with plenty beer and the brilliant atmosphere it was a great night. even though they got beat. 😀

Personal view on the world cup, ide prefer England, Scotland, Ireland or Wales to do it over anyone, im not fussed… 😀

I was there with the kids too (didn’t see you though!), I think the aussies and the boks have by far the best supporters for the banter and atmosphere, even the French have a good sense of humour around a rugby pitch!

my boka mate was at the other end of the stadium and phoned me up to tell me they’d just scored against us before blowing his hooter down the phone 🙄 superb pre, during and post match atmosphere in Cardiff, nowhere else has it!

It’s not only about the Football it’s the whole event, watching games in pubs, having people round with a few beers and the feel good factor, you certainly don’t need to be football fan to enjoy it.

I think you will find they may be on "their" way home. And you are pleading for them to "lose".

I think (and don’t care) both will go through. And both lose when they play a half decent team. England most likely on pens. :lol1:

Bring back Alf Ramsay I say. What does Fabio Cappello know. 🙄 (Most likely he is a Mole for Italy making sure England perfom badly.)
Sure he pretends he wants the team to win, but secretly he is making sure that England do poorly so that Italy have a greater chance of winning.

If the English national football team were actually managed by an "Englander " I reckon they would have a greater chance of winning 😕

Ok so I finally watched (soccer? football?) for the first time I think.
I think I watched Rugby once in the winter and it was just a jumble of guys in a heap.
Anyway, I was watching it with my 85 year old friend and he likened the sound of those stupid horns to the shrieks of ladies seeing Frank Sinatra in concert.
We also didn’t understand the whole "tie" concept. What? No overtime?
The most interesting thing to me was the adverts on the walls changing every so often. Bet that was expensive.

  • Hugh Potter

    Member

just the pools at the Mo Jill, ties are irrelevant at the mo as the four teams (four?) all play each other and the top two (i think) from each pool goes through to the next round, points are awarded for wins and a tie, nothing for a loss, if there’s a tie with points it will go down to most goals scored, conceeded etc, known as the goal difference.

once in the knock out rounds, quarters, semi’s etc, in the event of a tie they will play another 30mins -two 15min halves, not sure if it’s a full 30 mins or ‘golden goal’ (do they still do that?) where the first to score is the winner. if at the end of the 30mins it’s still draw (tie) then it will go to penalty shoot outs, we always do really well in these, especially against the Geermans!

my knowledge of football (soccer is an american term cos they stole the name ‘football’ for their armoured rugby – no offence!) is about 10yrs or more out of date so, i’m possibly wrong on the finer points!

Portugal ……. what are my chances 😕 they may have Ronaldo but have they got anything else to be a threat? Shame Figo is too old 😉

My money is still on Argentina. Did you hear Diego’s statement earlier? That he’s allowing his players to have sex during the competition as long as the women do all the work!!!! :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

    Long live this thread,
I am not a footie fan, but was half willing to watch a few matches in order to be seen to be patriotic, after all it is a big sporting event, and without any commercial interest 😀
Those fluckin horns put me right off though, just shows the mentallity of the audience watching, Hope Italy win,

Yup my elderly friend said he’d like to insert the the horns largest end first into the bottoms of those who are blowing them.

And this thread has been more interesting to me than the actual game.

Just catching up and had a chance to read (skim read) through this. I was wondering why the flags were changed and now I know and have updated mine not that I actually watch or follow "Soccer" at all.

Obviously being South African I do wonder exactly what this meant 😕

    Warren.
I have heard the horns are a traditional form of celebration in sa, that’s fine, just dont know why the crowd (audience)need to blow the bl00dy things all the time. It is actually getting on a lot of peoples nerves, Like I said, I am not a footie fan, but would have watched a bit more if not for the racket

TBH I don’t mind the horns, don’t really notice them once the game gets going, certainly no more annoying than the England brass band playing the ‘great escape’ tune or the damm annoying Pompey cow bell.

If the horn is part of the African sports scene, then we should have the good grace to put up with it / enjoy it.

Yeah, that’s what it’s all about Marcella.. hope your game is better than the Italy one 😕

Regarding the horns, certainly didn’t seem as bad tonight or am I getting used to them.

The official over there said that’s how they celebrate so ‘when in Rome’….
