  • Ink Costings [UKSG only]

    Evening,

I thought while I was waiting for a print to finish, that I would have a go at calculating a job I did recently and this job was 100% black onto Vinyl and was easy way of seeing the maximum coverage and price that our JV3 will do.

The Excel Graph shows that our profile is very greedy of magenta, we noticed this throughout the life of the printer. I am not the best at maths, I think I have got the formulas correct, if you want to suggest correction, please do.

I would be interested to see what you think of the figures and please feel free to use my sheet to calculate other ink usage.

    Morning Dave

    Nice investigation. 😀

Cant get my head around the final cost per m2 (cell B18). Seems quite high. I had a quick look and would have thought that you would use the cost of ink per linear mtr (G28) and divide by 1.52 to obtain ink cost per mtr? I made that to come out at £3.95 m2.

Saying that, my maths is about as good as my sign writing so please feel free to beat me with a stick and sit me in the corner wearing a hat so everyone can point and laugh! 😳

Overall, I find I go through a lot more magenta than any other ink which agrees with your experiment.

So why don’t they just make the magenta ink a bit stronger 😕

around 5 years ago i went to chertsey to meet with b&p at their place.
off topic, i began asking one of the more experienced blokes there the real running costs of printing based on the costs on CART fed printing. he said its pretty difficult to get EXACT costs due to every job being different, amount of ink going down dependant on coverage etc etc
he went onto saying the EASY rule of thumb for calculating per square metre was…

Fast Production mode = approx £2.20
quality mode for the likes of full colour onto vinyl = £6.40
anything in between, text combined with quality pictures etc = about £4

you have to remember the cost of your vinyl here too… including off-cuts when trimming/finishing. there labour, application tape and the same if laminating.

running costs a happy medium (unlaminated) would be

£5 per square metre on banner. (remember hemming on top)

£10 per square metre on Vinyl printing.

i remember Rodney gold around a year after this meeting posting on the boards his guesstimates and they were remarkably close to what they told me so i have always used this as a rule of thumb on calculating prints.

with the addition of bulk ink system lowering my ink costs? i STILL keep
to this pricing method as i see the move to bulk ink as lowering our costs yes, but not our customers.

My print cost worked out on average at £4.60 per m vinyl on a 760 Uniform Cadet running 220 carts, now on bulk so harder to work out as they last much longer but the cost is obviously less.
And like Rob that’s in my pocket thank you.
